Описание: When faced with a constant flow of information, correct and incorrect, how can society adequately explore the intersection of race, spirituality, politics, culture, and gender? What Color Are Your Jellybeans? Intersections of Generation, Race, Sex, Culture, and Gender examines how all these affect our views of differences in general, and more importantly, how we view each other.Adroitly combining original commentary and outstanding reading selections, the book explores the impact of gender, sexual, racial, cultural, and generational differences, especially as they impact the millennial generation. The material centers on understanding and valuing difference from both personal and global perspectives. It also examines significant historical and current events, trends, processes, and individual and organizational complexities that are inherent in any discussion of differences.Firmly rooted in a philosophy that encourages and validates diversity and inclusion, What Color Are Your Jellybeans? allows students to have a “safe space” to talk about difficult and even taboo topics, while at the same time examining the social structures behind the issues. This inspirational text is well-suited to courses in African American studies and history, women's and gender studies, diversity, and sociology.

Описание: Women of Moroccan and Turkish descent in the Netherlands are often portrayed as oppressed, non-integrated victims. It is deemed that their Islamic faith and their alleged lack of sense of home in the Netherlands are obstructing their integration. However, this research shows that many women try to integrate, some explicitly because of and not despite Islam. Their definitions, needs, and strategies of integration and their integration experiences vary though, depending on the combination of their generational status, educational level, ethnicity/nationality, and age. This variation is not reflected by policies and how society treats them, which hampers their integration. Furthermore, many women do feel at home in the Netherlands. Nonetheless, the more they integrate, the greater their exposure to assimilative pressures. This can diminish their sense of home, thereby thwarting their integration process.

Описание: Neutrophils are the cells that protect our lives against fungi, bacteria, or thrombi. In fungal or bacterial sepsis the flowing blood is exposed to unphysiologic matrices that fold factor 12 and prekallikrein into F12a and kallikrein. These two enzymes start the contact system of coagulation (altered matrix (AM) coagulation). The intrinsic ten-ase, factor 10a, thrombin, and micro-thrombi are formed. The neutrophils answer to increased blood concentrations of kallikrein (also a tissue enzyme) or micro-thrombi with intracellular NADPH-oxidase assembly and secretion of extracellular myeloperoxidase, together these enzymes generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) of the type of singlet oxygen, a selective destructor of "non-self" and light signal emitter. Two very interesting clinical routine assays quantify the pro-oxidative capacity of neutrophils in unsupplemented or supplemented blood (the blood ROS generation assay (BRGA)) and the kallikrein and thrombin-generating capacity of any material (eg: drinking water, vitamins, drugs, pathogens) that comes into contact with blood (the recalcified coagulation activity assay (RECA)). Especially the RECA is the breakthrough in innovative hemostasis diagnostic. Therefore, the present book focuses on activation of neutrophils by singlet oxygen or by kallikrein, an important starter enzyme of clinically so relevant altered matrix coagulation.

Описание: Agri-food bio-technology policy and regulation is transitioning from an early period focused on genetic engineering technologies to ‘next-generation’ rules and regulatory processes linked to challenges originating in a wide variety of new technological processes and applications. Can lessons learned from past and current regulatory oversights of agricultural biotechnology – and other high-technology sectors – help us address new and emerging regulatory challenges in the agri-food genetics sector? The expert contributors in this volume discuss the experiences of a wide range of North American, European and Asian countries with high technology regulation to address four key questions related to the past and future development of agri-food genomics regulation across the globe. how unique is agri-food biotechology regulation, and how can it be evaluated using the existing tools of regulatory analysis developed in examinations of other sectors? is a ‘government to governance’ model of regulatory regime development found in many other sectors relevant in this rapidly evolving sphere of activity? is a stages model of regulatory regime development accurate? And, if so, at which stage are we currently positioned in the regulation of agri-food genomics products and technologies? what drives movement between stages in different countries and sectors? In assessing such drivers, what are the key links between sectoral (meso) developments and more general macro and micro developments such as international relations and administrative behaviour? By updating, extending and challenging earlier empirical and theoretical social science perspectives on agricultural bio-technological regulation, this volume helps to inform future policy formulation. It will be of interest to practitioners and students of biotechnology, agriculture, and science and technology policy, and regulatory processes more generally.

Can we remember other people's memories? The Generation of Postmemory argues we can: that memories of traumatic events live on to mark the lives of those who were not there to experience them. Children of survivors and their contemporaries inherit catastrophic histories not through direct recollection but through haunting postmemories--multiply mediated images, objects, stories, behaviors, and affects passed down within the family and the culture at large.
In these new and revised critical readings of the literary and visual legacies of the Holocaust and other, related sites of memory, Marianne Hirsch builds on her influential concept of postmemory. The book's chapters, two of which were written collaboratively with the historian Leo Spitzer, engage the work of postgeneration artists and writers such as Art Spiegelman, W.G. Sebald, Eva Hoffman, Tatana Kellner, Muriel Hasbun, Anne Karpff, Lily Brett, Lorie Novak, David Levinthal, Nancy Spero and Susan Meiselas. Grappling with the ethics of empathy and identification, these artists attempt to forge a creative postmemorial aesthetic that reanimates the past without appropriating it. In her analyses of their fractured texts, Hirsch locates the roots of the familial and affiliative practices of postmemory in feminism and other movements for social change. Using feminist critical strategies to connect past and present, words and images, and memory and gender, she brings the entangled strands of disparate traumatic histories into more intimate contact. With more than fifty illustrations, her text enables a multifaceted encounter with foundational and cutting edge theories in memory, trauma, gender, and visual culture, eliciting a new understanding of history and our place in it.
