This new series presents original scholarly and essayistic work addressing the central status of literature in and for the human sciences. At stake in the monographs and essay collections are paradigms of literary forms for thinking the human sciences: the knowledge involved in a literary work; how modes of reading and writing shape and depend on an epoch or area of thinking; literature's affinities and points of resistance to what we call the humanities and the sciences. In other words, the series examines how literature works with and upon philosophy, rhetoric, technology, anthropology, sociology, statistics, economics, history, experimental science, mathematics etc. Paradigms is primarily concerned with German letters, but also includes its European and comparative literary contexts. All volumes will be published in English and are first reviewed by the series editors followed by a peer review from two academics in the particular area of specialization. Two to four volumes are planned annually.

Описание: Political hierarchies and ecological crises are often considered to be two different problems. For example, many speak in the present of parallel concerns: climate change and racial injustice. Emily Anne Parker argues rather that these concerns share a common cause in the polis. Polis is an ancient Greek term for the city-state, from which the English term political derives. But polis is more than a term. It is a philosophy according to which there is onecomplete human body, and that body is meant to govern all other things. In that sense there are not two concerns, but instead one concern: to perceive the ways in which this tradition of the polis constrains the present. Emily Anne Parker bridges the insights of social constructionism and new materialisms tocreate a philosophy of elemental difference. Difference, rather than needing to be either dismissed based on its social construction or reified in keeping with the hierarchies of the polis, is crucial for addressing contemporary crises of the polis.

Автор: Harris Alex, Sartor Margaret Название: Dream of a House: The Passions and Preoccupations of Reynolds Price ISBN: 193808649X ISBN-13(EAN): 9781938086496 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 44350.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: The eye is sovereign in every art but music. Reading, writing and painting are all but soundless deeds of sight."" These are the words of Reynolds Price (1933-2011), one America's greatest writers. In his novels, short stories, poems and plays - forty-one books in all - Price renders with keenness, clarity and profound eloquence the experience of life, both the visible and invisible, the outward and the interior. What is not well known is that Price was also a visionary collector. In his modest North Carolina house, nestled among southern pines and hardwoods, Price - confined to a wheelchair for the last three decades of his life - curated and arranged his books, photographs, paintings, sculptures, masks, religious icons, and objects he collected, purchased, or was given over the years, creating a visual environment that directly reflected his life, his experiences, his passions and preoccupations. After his death in 2011, Price's family invited acclaimed photographer, Alex Harris to photograph the house. In this remarkably intimate and revealing book, Harris and his wife, writer Margaret Sartor, pair sixty of Harris's color photographs with excerpts from Price's fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and interviews. As longtime neighbors and friends who spent time in his house over many years, they show the ways in which the art and memorabilia Price collected inspired his writing and illuminates connections between the visible world he constructed and the creations of his mind. As we turn the pages of this book, it is as if Reynolds Price himself takes us on a guided tour of his home. And as we walk through his rooms, he reveals his private world, recounts significant episodes in his life, and speaks with wisdom and humor about the people, ideas, and beliefs most important to him. As readers we follow, we listen, and we see. Reynolds Price's connection to his house - where he lived and worked for over four decades - offers insight into our own lives and loves, teaches us about the importance of place, shows how to be fully engaged in the world, how to strive to live a meaningful life.
Автор: Benjamin Lewis Robinson Название: Bureaucratic Fanatics: Modern Literature and the Passions of Rationalization ISBN: 3110595192 ISBN-13(EAN): 9783110595192 Издательство: Walter de Gruyter Цена: 107790.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Is justice only achievable by means of bureaucratization or might it first arrive with the end of bureaucracy? Bureaucratic Fanatics shows how this ever more contentious question in contemporary politics belongs to the political-theological underpinnings of bureaucratization itself. At the end of the 18th century, a new and paradoxical kind of fanaticism emerged - rational fanaticism - that propelled the intensive biopolitical management of everyday life in Europe and North America as well as the extensive colonial exploitation of the earth and its peoples. These excesses of bureaucratization incited in turn increasingly fanatical forms of resistance. And they inspired literary production that provocatively presented the outrageous contours of rationalization. Combining political theory with readings of Kleist, Melville, Conrad, and Kafka, this genealogy of bureaucratic fanaticism relates two extreme figures: fanatical bureaucrats driven to the ends of the earth and to the limits of humanity by the rationality of the apparatuses they serve; and peculiar fanatics who passionately, albeit seemingly passively, resist the encroachments of bureaucratization.

Описание: A PLACE TO CALL HOME begins on a ship when a nurse -- Sister Adams by name -- works her passage home to Australia to console her mother who is grieving for a son killed in the Korean War. Estranged from her family, she stands before the welcome mat, fearful of what she will find inside and wondering whether her mother will accept her despite a breach of decades. Several minutes into their reunion, the mother tells her daughter to leave because she cannot reconcile with a child, born a Catholic, who is now -- a Jew. On the ship, Sister Adams is asked to care for the matriarch [Elizabeth Bligh] of a wealthy landed family returning to Australia with son and granddaughter as well as with newly wedded grandson and his wife, a marriage intended to blunt his desire for sexual relations with men. Acutely conscious of the privileges bestowed on the Bligh family, matriarch Elizabeth also embraces a set of traditions coiled around a social structure that is expected to ensure stability from the particularly harrowing experiences of a world war exposing country and people to assaults on all fronts including the ones at home. The encounter between Sarah and Elizabeth reflects the strains and conflicts that hovered over Australia in the years following the traumas of war, their undiminished echo shaping lives and hardening the fault lines. Everyone watching this program knows how the narrative ends for Australia, but few understand what it took to make room in the country for people typically hidden from view or told, in one way or another, that they didnt count for much. The freedoms taken for granted today were won in painful struggles too often measured only as gains without taking a full accounting of losses. In 1953, Australians lived in the shadow of experiences they could not fully explain: the war to which so many young men and women had gone ended up producing more desolation and grief than peace and comfort. Church and family could not offer adequate explanations for the past nor did they continue to serve as the absolute constituents of destiny given the social and political pressures pushing upward and outward against the constraints of class and circumstance. An open society not only posed dangers to traditional class and culture; it also raised fears about what the forces blowing in the wind would bring or where they would take people and society. Would the emancipatory dreams of the poor and exploited be realized and would they march everyone to the edge of a chaotic precipice? Was a bell tolling for all that Australians believed would last forever? Even as it was on the cusp of extinction, the way of life, portrayed in this series, was ended without the world crashing down, and the story told over the six seasons on television peels back the present to reveal a past that explains why change may be more frightening to think about than to live through.
