Описание:

The relations between memory and history have recently become a subject of contention, and the implications of that debate are particularly troubling for aesthetic, ethical, and political issues. Dominick LaCapra focuses on the interactions among history, memory, and ethicopolitical concerns as they emerge in the aftermath of the Shoah. Particularly notable are his analyses of Albert Camus's novella The Fall, Claude Lanzmann's film Shoah, and Art Spiegelman's "comic book" Maus. LaCapra also considers the Historians' Debate in the aftermath of German reunification and the role of psychoanalysis in historical understanding and critical theory. In six essays, LaCapra addresses a series of related questions. Are there experiences whose traumatic nature blocks understanding and disrupts memory while producing belated effects that have an impact on attempts to address the past? Do some events present moral and representational issues even for groups or individuals not directly involved in them? Do those more directly involved have special responsibilities to the past and the way it is remembered in the present? Can or should historiography define itself in a purely scholarly and professional way that distances it from public memory and its ethical implications? Does art itself have a special responsibility with respect to traumatic events that remain invested with value and emotion?

Описание: Of one-and-a-half million photographs related to Nazi concentration camps, only four depict the actual process of mass killing perpetrated at the gas chambers. This book reveals that these photos of Auschwitz, taken clandestinely by one of the Jewish prisoners forced to help carry out the atrocities there, were made as a potent act of resistance.

Embracing Auschwitz: Forging a Vibrant, Life-Affirming Judaism that Takes the Holocaust Seriously

Описание:

Embracing Auschwitz makes a bold claim: We should not try to get over the Holocaust and not to become desensitized to what took place at Auschwitz, but rather we should fully incorporate its lessons into our souls. It is time to recognize that in fact the Holocaust is not only part of our Jewish story, it frames our story; it is our story-and our greatest Jewish responsibility and honor is to bear witness and to share that story.

Judaism must be flexible enough to save itself, Rabbi Joshua Hammerman argues. In so doing, it can lend a shining example of how to regenerate when the world is spinning out of control.

Embracing Auschwitz outlines a Torah of Auschwitz, a complement to the Torah we received at Sinai, with new commandments and new commitments. In the face of the thundering repudiation Judaism's theological underpinnings that took place during the Holocaust, a new Judaism is taking shape, and Embracing Auschwitz tells its story.

"Compelling and provocative." -Yossi Klein Halevi, author, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor

"Hammerman's brave new vision challenges us and demands our attention."

- Gary Rosenblatt, Editor At Large, The Jewish Week

"Should be read by every Jew who cares about Judaism."

- Rabbi Dr. Irving "Yitz" Greenberg, author, The Jewish Way

"Eye opening and thought provoking." -U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal

"A powerful meditation on what Judaism could be in this time." - Peter Beinart, author, The Crisis of Zionism

In the Shadow of Auschwitz: German Massacres against Polish Civilians, 1939–1945

Описание:

The Nazi invasion of Poland was the first step in an unremittingly brutal occupation, one most infamously represented by the network of death camps constructed on Polish soil. The systematic murder of Jews in the camps has understandably been the focus of much historical attention. Less well-remembered today is the fate of millions of non-Jewish Polish civilians, who—when they were not expelled from their homeland or forced into slave labor—were murdered in vast numbers both within and outside of the camps. Drawing on both German and Polish sources, In the Shadow of Auschwitz gives a definitive account of the depredations inflicted upon Polish society, tracing the ruthless implementation of a racial ideology that cast ethnic Poles as an inferior race.

Описание:

Ruth Kluger (1931 – 2020) passed away on October 5, 2020 in the U.S. Born in Vienna and deported to Theresienstadt, she survived Auschwitz and the Shoah together with her mother. After living in Germany for a short time after the War, she immigrated to New York. She was educated in the U.S. and received degrees in English literature as well as her Ph.D. in German literature at the University of California, Berkeley. She taught at several American universities. She has numerous scholarly publications to her credit, mostly in the fields of German and Austrian literary history. She is also recognized as a poet in her own right, an essayist, and a feminist critic. She returned to Europe, where she was a guest professor in Gottingen and Vienna. Her memoir, entitled weiter leben (1992), which she translated and revised in an English parallel-text as Still Alive, was a major bestseller and highly regarded autobiographical account of a Holocaust survivor. It was subsequently translated into more than a dozen languages. It has also generated a vigorous critical discussion in its own right. Ruth Kluger received numerous prestigious literary prizes and other distinctions.

The present volume, The Legacy of Ruth Kluger and the End of the Auschwitz Century, aims to honor her memory by assessing critically her writings and career. Taking her biography and writings as points of departure, the volume includes contributions in fields and from perspectives which her writings helped to bring into focus acutely. In the table of contents are listed the following contributions: Sander L. Gilman, "Poetry and Naming in Ruth Kluger’s Works and Life"; Heinrich Detering, "’Spannung’: Remarks on a Stylistic Principle in Ruth Kluger’s Writing"; Stephan Braese, "Speaking with Germans. Ruth Kluger and the ‘Restitution of Speech between Germans and Jews’"; Irene Heidelberger-Leonard, "Writing Auschwitz: Jean Amery, Imre Kertesz, and Ruth Kluger"; Ulrike Offenberg, "Ruth Kluger and the Jewish Tradition on Women Saying Kaddish; Mark H. Gelber, "Ruth Kluger, Judaism, and Zionism: An American Perspective"; Monica Tempian, "Children’s Voices in the Poetry of the Shoah"; Daniel Reynolds, "Ruth Kluger and the Problem of Holocaust Tourism"; Vera Schwarcz, "A China Angle on Memory and Ghosts in the Poetry of Ruth Kluger."

Описание:

In 1944, members of the Sonderkommando—the “special squads,” composed almost exclusively of Jewish prisoners, who ensured the smooth operation of the gas chambers and had firsthand knowledge of the extermination process—buried on the grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau a series of remarkable eyewitness accounts of Nazi genocide. This careful and penetrating study examines anew these “Scrolls of Auschwitz,” which were gradually recovered, in damaged and fragmentary form, in the years following the camp’s liberation. It painstakingly reconstructs their historical context and textual content, revealing complex literary works that resist narrow moral judgment and engage difficult questions about the limits of testimony.

Описание:

Many doctors in Germany were convinced that they were the chosen people to create a healthy, racially pure Volksk rper (body of people) and by doing so, establishing a racial utopia. As strong supporters of National Socialism, they welcomed the founding of the Third Reich. After Hitler acceded to power, German physicians joined the SS in particular. During the twelve years of the Nazi era, seven percent of German doctors became members of the SS. The average membership of the population was only 0.6 percent. Moreover, doctors were also overrepresented as a profession, with teachers consisting less than half a percent and musicians only three percent. Only lawyers had a larger share in the SS than doctors.

The average income of German doctors extremely increased after 1933, even exceeding the income of lawyers. The Nazi doctors of the human experiments also joined the SS in large numbers. German doctors were far more reluctant to join the NSDAP than the SS. Before 1933, only seven percent of all German doctors joined the NSDAP (Nazi party). They joined the party when it seemed opportune to do so, in 1933, and particularly in 1937. In 1933, physicians consisted almost a quarter of all academic professionals in the NSDAP. Most doctors joined the NSDAP in 1937, with a membership rate of 43 percent of the total profession. German physicians sat on the fence during the first years of the Nazi era, insecure about the effects of the new regime on their profession. By 1937, the Third Reich had won their trust for several reasons. The NSDAP had solved the economic crisis and had reorganized the medical profession. Moreover, the regime had solved "the Jewish question" in the medical sector.
