Описание: Winner of the 2019 Gordon K. & Sybil Lewis Book Award. In 1833, the abolition of slavery in the British Empire led to the import of exploited South Asian indentured workers in the Caribbean under extreme oppression. Dave Ramsaran and Linden F. Lewis concentrate on the Indian descendants' processes of mixing, assimilating, and adapting while trying desperately to hold on to that which marks a group of people as distinct. In some ways, the lived experience of the Indian community in Guyana and Trinidad represents a cultural contradiction of belonging and non-belonging. In other parts of the Caribbean, people of Indian descent seem so absorbed by the more dominant African culture and through intermarriage that Indo-Caribbean heritage seems less central. In this collaboration based on focus groups, in-depth interviews, and observation, sociologists Ramsaran and Lewis lay out a context within which to develop a broader view of Indians in Guyana and Trinidad, a numerical majority in both countries. They address issues of race and ethnicity but move beyond these familiar aspects to track such factors as ritual, gender, family, and daily life. Ramsaran and Lewis gauge not only an unrelenting process of assimilative creolization on these descendants of India, but also the resilience of this culture in the face of modernization and globalization.

Описание: How can religious freedom be granted to people who do not have a religion? While Indian indentured workers in colonial Trinidad practiced cherished rituals, ""Hinduism"" was not a widespread category in India at the time. On this Caribbean island, people of South Asian descent and African descent came together—under the watchful eyes of the British rulers—to walk on hot coals for fierce goddesses, summon spirits of the dead, or honor Muslim martyrs, practices that challenged colonial norms for religion and race. Drawing deeply on colonial archives, Alexander Rocklin examines the role of the category of religion in the regulation of the lives of Indian laborers struggling for autonomy.
Gradually, Indians learned to narrate the origins, similarities, and differences among their fellows' cosmological views, and to define Hindus, Muslims, and Christians as distinct groups. Their goal in doing this work of subaltern comparative religion, as Rocklin puts it, was to avoid criminalization and to have their rituals authorized as legitimate religion—they wanted nothing less than to gain access to the British promise of religious freedom. With the indenture system's end, the culmination of this politics of recognition was the gradual transformation of Hindus' rituals and the reorganization of their lives—they fabricated a ""world religion"" called Hinduism.

Описание: In the Fires of Hope: Trinidad & Tobago at 50 is the first in a 2-volume series, which is the outcome of conference papers, lectures and special presentations held at The University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th anniversary of independence. The centrepiece of this first volume are the “Conversations” in which former Prime Minister ANR Robinson and Basdeo Panday are engaged by an audience in speaking freely about their respective tenures in office during critical periods of Trinidad and Tobago’s recent history, as well as their vision for the country going into the future. Together, these two lively conversations make up the first part of the volume.Part Two begins with recommendations for constitutional change in Trinidad and Tobago but is comprised predominantly of papers on the economy, with a special focus on the energy sector. In varying ways, the authors depict the influence of this sector as both a blessing and a curse – on the one hand it accounts for the bulk of the country’s exports, foreign exchange and GDP while, on the other, it is an impediment to diversification and the potential for environmental degradation. At the same time, they offer recommendations for policy changes that can reap positive social and economic benefits for the country while making Trinidad and Tobago a model nation for energy-based sustainable development in the 21st century.Tobago comes in for special attention. Its future development is presented as an opportunity to implement the kinds of policy interventions to avoid some of the errors of the past, in particular, the variant called “Dutch Disease” suffered to some extent by Trinidad and Tobago.Sociocultural issues are also covered. The urban district of Woodbrook, home to many who helped to shape the development of modern Trinidad, is presented in a fascinating case study as the site of an emergent “Trinidadian” nationalism, which is probably representative of the country as a whole.Together, the presentations in this volume make a significant addition to the body of literature that illuminates Trinidad and Tobago society’s understanding of itself and underscores the UWI’s commitment to national development.

Описание: They are four-legged police officers sniffing their way through mountains, tropical forests, and urban jungles, and they operate in the southernmost Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, just seven miles from Venezuela. Police dogs and their canine officers face dangers including drug dealers, thieves, kidnappers, and murderers by relying on their most important weapon: trust. Bravery and perseverance prevail.
This is an unprecedented look at crime from the police canine section's perspective, with the bond between police officers and their dog partners at the heart of the story. Written by a journalist with a background in anthropology, this book is based on exclusive access to the police dogs' secret files. It includes interviews with retired and working canine officers and spans 70 years, from the canine section's inception in 1952 to 2022. Follow the dogs' work during colonialism, independence, the Black Power movement, the rise of the illegal drug trade, and the age of terrorism. Criminals grow bolder and crime-fighting becomes more sophisticated, but police dogs still rank as one of the most effective ways to fight crime. Fierce, feared, loyal and lovable, these dogs create an unforgettable trail of heartwarming, heart-wrenching, and unimaginable stories.

Описание: Experienced Scholars, historians, and fresh voices in the field of Caribbean history combine in this collected work to create a rich tapestry of the modern history of Trinidad and Tobago. The result is a work of broad-based perspectives as the contributors explore some of the most significant periods, issues and systems of post-emancipation and modern Trinidad and Tobago. The early chapters delve in to the post-emancipation period – enslavement, colonial administration, Indian indentureship – and the early 20th century internal and external developments related to resistance, foreign nationalism and religious incursions which guided the independence experience. Dr Eric Williams, arguably the central character of the independence story, is the subject of special focus as is the evolution of cultural expressions like the mas, calypso and literature. The perennial and seemingly intractable Tobago constitutional issue is also examined with new insights. The work is given a particularly unique appeal by the inclusion of areas that have typically been overlooked in the independence discourse, such as health, the banking and credit union system, teacher education, migrant Trinidadian communities, security systems and the impact of crime. What began as a commemorative volume, emerging out of a 2012 independence jubilee conference hosted by The University of the West Indies St Augustine campus, has been transformed into the most comprehensive text available on the period; filling a long-standing gap in the modern history of Trinidad and Tobago.
