Описание: This thought-provoking collection of essays analyses the complex, multi-faceted, and even contradictory nature of Stalinism and its representations.
Stalinism was an extraordinarily repressive and violent political model, and yet it was led by ideologues committed to a vision of socialism and international harmony. The essays in this volume stress the complex, multi-faceted, and often contradictory nature of Stalin, Stalinism, and Stalinist-style leadership, and. explore the complex picture that emerges. Broadly speaking, three important areas of debate are examined, united by a focus on political leadership:
* The key controversies surrounding Stalin’s leadership role
* A reconsideration of Stalin and the Cold War
* New perspectives on the cult of personality
Revisioning Stalin and Stalinism is a crucial volume for all students and scholars of Stalin’s Russia and Cold War Europe.

In this volume Europe’s leading modern historians offer new insights into two totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century that have profoundly affected world history—Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union. Until now historians have paid more attention to the similarities between these two regimes than to their differences. Stalinism and Nazism explores the difficult relationship between the history and memory of the traumas inflicted by Nazi and Soviet occupation in several Eastern European countries in the twentieth century.
The first part of the volume explores the origins, nature, and organization of Hitler’s and Stalin’s dictatorial power, the manipulation of violence by the state systems, and the comparative power of the dictator’s personal will and the encompassing totalitarian system. The second part examines the legacies of the Nazi and Stalinist regimes in Eastern European countries that experienced both. Stalinism and Nazism features the latest critical perspectives on two of the most influential and deadly political regimes in modern history.
Resistance has become an important and controversial analytical category for the study of Stalinism. The opening of Soviet archives allows historians an unprecedented look at the fabric of state and society in the 1930s. Researchers long spellbound by myths of Russian fatalism and submission as well as by the very real powers of the Stalinist state are startled by the dimensions of popular resistance under Stalin.
Narratives of such resistance are inherently interesting, yet the topic is also significant because it sheds light on its historical surroundings. Contending with Stalinism employs the idea of resistance as a tool to explore what otherwise would remain opaque features of the social, cultural, and political history of the 1930s. In the process, the authors reveal a semi-autonomous world residing within and beyond the official world of Stalinism. Resistance ranged across a spectrum from violent strikes to the passive resistance that was a virtual way of life for millions and took many forms, from foot dragging and negligence to feigned ignorance and false compliance.
Contending with Stalinism also highlights the problematic nature of resistance as an analytical category and stresses the ambiguous nature of the phenomenon. The topics addressed include working-class strikes, peasant rebellions, black-market crimes, official corruption, and homosexual and ethnic subcultures.

Описание: Stalinism on Trial analyzes judicial politics in Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War of 19361939. It examines the relationship between the Spanish Republican government and its Soviet ally by way of a micro-history of the prosecution and trial of a communist (but anti-Stalinist) party, the Partido Obrero de Unificacion Marxista (POUM; Workers Party of Marxist Unification). The state prosecuted the POUM for espionage, treason, and rebellion against the government, but convicted its leaders only of the third charge. The prosecution took place amidst repressions and show trials in the USSR. Jonathan Sherry challenges interpretations of Soviet involvement in Spain that attribute political repression to vacuous notions of Stalinism and the reputed all-powerful hand of Moscow. Interrogating the notion of the Moscow Trial in Spain he evaluates the political influences that shaped the prosecution using materials from various archives, especially the Fundacion Juan Negrin. The Republics prosecution of the POUM leadership should be understood within the context of a broader effort to reconstruct the Republics penal institutions. Throughout the prosecution, Negrins judiciary remained dedicated to a liberal conception of justice that attempted to preserve the individual rights of the defendants. In the struggle for control between Spanish Republican officials and Soviet-affiliated advisors, the former prevailed over the latter, with Negrin acting as a skilled mediator. The trial represented the finale of the contentious debate about what form justice should take in a nation in the throes of revolution and civil war. The judiciary rejected the contemporaneous Moscow trials in both form and content, and sought to reinforce the legitimacy of the Republican government internally and internationally. Rather than providing Soviet representatives an opportunity to extend their campaign against Trotskyism to Republican Spain, the prosecution constituted a sharp rebuke of Soviet politics. Описание: This book is the first full-length study of the Soviet Constitution of 1936, exploring Soviet citizens’ views of constitutional democratic principles and their problematic relationship to the reality of Stalinism. Drawing on archival materials, the book offers an insight into the mass political culture of the mid-1930s in the USSR and thus contributes to wider research on Russian political culture. Popular comments about the constitution show how liberal, democratic and conciliatory discourse co-existed in society with illiberal, confrontational and intolerant views. The study also covers the government’s goals for the constitution’s revision and the national discussion, and its disappointment with the results. Outcomes of the discussion convinced Stalin that society was not sufficiently Sovietized. Stalin's re-evaluation of society's condition is a new element in the historical picture explaining why politics shifted from the relaxation of 1933-36 to the Great Terror, and why repressions expanded from former oppositionists to the officials and finally to the wider population.
