Описание:

This book offers an accessible and up-to-date reference on primate zoonoses. Recent years have witnessed a rise in human diseases zoonotically transferred from animals, with wild primates implicated in the spread of numerous newly emerging infections. The authors go beyond simply providing an inventory of diseases, helping readers to understand how and why they are transmitted. Important consideration is given to the contemporary cultural and ecological factors involved.

Описание: Due to the phylogenetic relationship and close genetic and biological similarities with humans, non-human primates (NHP) are regularly used in biomedical and behavioural research. However, because of their highly developed cognitive abilities and social skills, the use of these animals in biomedical research is debated more and more. Although it is acknowledged that in specific research areas NHP are still essential, it is recognised that the use of these animals can only be done under strict conditions under the most optimal welfare aspects. Welfare aspects include housing conditions, non-invasive methods and application of the 3Rs policy. Although many refinement methods have been described in nationally and internationally accepted guidelines on animal laboratory practice, recognition of the guidelines is unfortunately not universal. The present book covers a wide range of NHP models in preclinical research and welfare issues. The following chapters will cover: refinement of the use of NHP in biomedical research; NHP ethics and regulations in Europe; biological basis differences in the human and NHP; the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) immunology in NHP; stem cell biology in NHP; neuro and gliogenesis in an NHP ischemia stroke model; NHP models in autoimmune disease, organ transplantation and infectious disease research; viral diseases in NHP; NHP models in Parkinsons disease, in neurodegenerative disorders research and in cardio-cerebrovascular disease research; islet transplantation; ophthalmic diseases research and neurophysiology in NHP; transgenic engineering in NHP; NHP models of cancers; NHP models in respiratory disease research; NHP models in clinical and non-clinical pharmacology; NHP models in lung transplantation; and aging research in NHP. This book encapsulates a large volume of knowledge scientists have achieved in the field of nonhuman primate models in preclinical research. The editors have invited experts from the United States, Canada, and Europe to contribute 23 chapters in their respective fields of their expertise.

Описание: Despite many encouraging developments in the field of animal-free technologies, well-defined animal models are still needed to study fundamental properties of human diseases and to develop new prophylactic and therapeutic treatments against human diseases. Non-human primates (NHP) make up only a small, but important, part of the total number of animals used in biomedical and preclinical research. Due to their close phylogenetic relationship and the shared susceptibility to many human diseases, NHP can provide important research models to study these diseases and, as such, play a critical role in the advancement of various areas in the medical field. Studies in NHP have contributed to our understanding of various diseases and fundamental biological phenomena and they continue to be important in the development of new therapies, treatments, drugs and vaccines. Moreover, NHP models also contribute to our general knowledge of the processes that underlie non-disease and disease conditions. Important areas where NHP can provide important information include (emerging) infectious diseases, organ transplantation, neurological and aging-related disorders. Although not covered in this book due to time constraints, the need for, and benefits of, NHP models has been demonstrated most recently in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The present book is the second of two volumes and covers important disease areas where NHP are used as model species. This volume includes different chapters on NHP models in infectious diseases, aging, neurodegenerative disorders, organ transplantation and cancer.

Описание: This book presents the state of art in the field of microbial zoonoses and sapronoses. It could be used as a textbook or manual in microbiology and medical zoology for students of human and veterinary medicine, including Ph.D. students, and for biomedicine scientists and medical practitioners and specialists as well. Surprisingly, severe zoonoses and sapronoses still appear that are either entirely new (e.g., SARS), newly recognized (Lyme borreliosis), resurging (West Nile fever in Europe), increasing in incidence (campylobacterosis), spatially expanding (West Nile fever in the Americas), with a changing range of hosts and/or vectors, with changing clinical manifestations or acquiring antibiotic resistance. The collective term for those diseases is (re)emerging infections, and most of them represent zoonoses and sapronoses (the rest are anthroponoses). The number of known zoonotic and sapronotic pathogens of humans is continually growing ? over 800 today. In the introductory part, short characteristics are given of infectious and epidemic process, including the role of environmental factors, possibilities of their epidemiological surveillance, and control. Much emphasis is laid on ecological aspects of these diseases (haematophagous vectors and their life history; vertebrate hosts of zoonoses; habitats of the agents and their geographic distribution; natural focality of diseases). Particular zoonoses and sapronoses are then characterized in the following brief paragraphs: source of human infection; animal disease; transmission mode; human disease; epidemiology; diagnostics; therapy; geographic distribution.

Описание:

Humans suffer from numerous parasitic foodborne zoonoses, many of which are caused by helminths. The helminth zoonoses of concern in this book are normally limited to diseases of animals which have now become transmissible to humans. In the past these diseases were limited to populations living in low- and middle-income countries, but the geographical limits and populations at risk are expanding and changing because of growing international markets, improved transportation systems, and demographic changes (such as population movements). The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that the number of people currently infected with food borne trematodes alone exceeds 41 million, but worldwide the number of people at risk, including those in developed countries, is 750 million. The increasing recognition of the public health significance of these zoonoses, especially their complicated epidemiologies, and their links to poverty, intensification of agriculture, environmental degradation, and lack of tools for control- has been welcome. However, the development of priorities for a national public health system is often a competitive exercise, and the argument for devoting appropriate attention and resources to foodborne parasitic zoonoses is generally handicapped by the lack of good health and economic impact data. The genesis of this book was a desire to draw attention to the problem of these zoonoses and to hopefully, inspire greater efforts to acquire a reliable global impact assessment and therefore a basis for improved prevention and control actions for these zoonoses.

This book reviews not only the prevalence and distribution of these zoonoses, including available health and economic impact data, but will highlight gaps in knowledge that must be filled in order to gain the assessment needed to depict the overall importance of a particular zoonosis. This is critical for comparisons to other pressing public health and development needs in resource allocations. The topics on epidemiology, diagnosis, and clinical aspects emphasize the knowledge gaps that limit a full understanding of these zoonoses, and target where greater research investments on these parasitic diseases should be focused.

Описание: Helminths include one of the most diverse and geographically widespread groups of parasites which infect humans and animals. About 100 species have been reported from humans, usually producing asymptomatic infection or mild symptoms. However, about 20 species are of public health importance causing severe or even fatal infections. In many parts of Africa parasitic helminths are responsible for enormous economic losses, hampering rural development programmes and reducing the pace of economic growth. Many parasitic helminths are either zoonoses (diseases naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man) or have evolved from animal parasites. The modification of the environment through wars, famine and the ever expanding and increasingly mobile human population brings people into close contact with new environments and wildlife species which makes the study and control of zoonoses of special interest and complexity. In Africa, the transmission of helminth parasites is highly influenced by the ever changing social and cultural differences between diverse groups of peoples and their interaction with wild and domestic animals. It is not surprising, therefore, that approaches to the study and control of parasitic zoonoses require intersectoral cooperation between physicians, veterinarians, parasitologists, zoologists, demographers, anthropologists, engineers and economists to provide the breadth of knowledge and expertise required to develop our understanding of these diseases and to devise methods for their control. This book provides a selective compilation of parasitic helminths, many of which are zoonoses which create important economic and public health problems in Africa.
