Описание: Originally published in 1984, one of the few facts that emerged clearly in the beleaguered field of psychology and mental health at the time was the extent of poor social skills in psychiatric patients, the mentally handicapped and problem adolescents. As a result, during the 1970s, social skills training – espoused as a form of behaviour therapy – seemed to offer great promise, based on the notion that social skills, like any other skills, are learnt and can be taught if lacking. However, in evaluating social skills training, many investigators found that skills did not endure and generalise. This book attempts a major re-assessment of social skills training. It examines the underlying paradigms, which are shown to be fundamentally behaviourist. Such paradigms, it is argued, severely constrain the aims and method of current types of training. Thus the book develops what is termed an ‘agency’ approach, based on man as a social agent who actively constructs his own experiences and generates his own goal-directed behaviour on the basis of those constructs. This new model is developed in both theoretical and practical ways in the main body of the book and should, even today, be of great interest to all those involved with social skills training.

Don't know how to handle conflict and emotions in your relationship/marriage? Is communication an issue in your relationship/marriage? Knowing how to communicate effectively requires you to have the information around what effective communication is; a clear understanding of how to apply it, and a great deal of practice.
Most times, poor communication skills are a result of bad habits and simply not knowing any better. It is rare that a person truly intends to communicate poorly with their spouse, or anyone else. After all, knowing the negative impact that poor communication can have on a relationship is reason enough to want to do better. That being said, practicing effective communication will require you to both learn new habits and break old ones.
Another reason why you may struggle with communication is that of the very intimacy that you share with your partner. Telling them about difficult or vulnerable pieces of information or dealing with conflict in a marriage can be challenging.
Here are the topics mentioned:
The importance of communication in the couple and how to improve it
Work on yourself first
Ego in a relationship
Why do couples need to focus on communication?
How to deal with serious problems
Practical exercises to try with your partner to improve communication
There are a lot of children (and adults) who struggle with reading. Some are helped by their schools, some are not.
In this short booklet, Pamela Brookes shares some of the basic information she wishes she'd had when she was first trying to figure out how to help her child learn to read.
Teaching A Struggling Reader: One Mom's Experience with Dyslexia is filled with links to informational and product resources for parents or teachers. It is geared to people who want to educate themselves in the methods that are effective in teaching those with dyslexia. It also contains photos demonstrating basic techniques like "Tapping" (using one's fingers to aid in sounding out words) and "Making your bed" to differentiate between "b" and "d."
This Edition includes new information and new links including the social and economic impacts of illiteracy. It also contains information on Early Intervention, including what parents can do if they suspect their young child may have dyslexia during the toddler and preschool years, and a section on hat if It's NOT Dyslexia.
This is a booklet that can be read in one sitting. However, there are ample links to provide an even greater experience. The URLs for the links referenced in this paperback version are listed as endnotes. The hyperlinks are active in the e-book format.

Описание: "Ah Jeeeze, not another book about Autism." But this one is different It's not all rainbows, unicorns and blessings. The Dark Side of Autism puts raising a child with special needs into perspective with no sugar coating of the reality. With firsthand experience raising a nonverbal child with autism and epilepsy, Angela talks openly and honestly about the true challenges parents face raising a child on the spectrum. With contentious opinions and candid observations, The Dark Side of Autism tells the truth about a dark and difficult subject people don't like to talk about while fostering awareness for this sometimes debilitating and mostly unknown neurological disorder. This offhanded, direct and vulnerable parenting chronicle will give you a new appreciation for the simple things taken for granted with neuro-typical kids like taking a trip to Disneyland, a full night's sleep and haircuts. Angela often says things people only think to themselves in fear of offending someone. Autism has a dark side---it's learning to cope with the darkness that can lift you up. If you are a parent with a child with special needs this book may read your mind. Angela is spot on with her darkly funny observations in the world of special needs---from the taunting beeping of a short bus to mastering IEPs with a reoccurring "don't ask, don't tell" theme. If you know someone, and chances are you do, caring for a child with special needs, you will gain new insight on what it must be like for them. This book can be easily used as a guide to the stupid things NOT to say to a parent with a mentally or physically challenged child---without checking your "foot in the mouth meter" first. The Dark Side of Autism can help you be a kinder, more compassionate friend, parent, spouse and human.
