Описание:

Since its original publication, Expert Political Judgment by New York Times bestselling author Philip Tetlock has established itself as a contemporary classic in the literature on evaluating expert opinion.

etlock first discusses arguments about whether the world is too complex for people to find the tools to understand political phenomena, let alone predict the future. He evaluates predictions from experts in different fields, comparing them to predictions by well-informed laity or those based on simple extrapolation from current trends. He goes on to analyze which styles of thinking are more successful in forecasting. Classifying thinking styles using Isaiah Berlin's prototypes of the fox and the hedgehog, Tetlock contends that the fox--the thinker who knows many little things, draws from an eclectic array of traditions, and is better able to improvise in response to changing events--is more successful in predicting the future than the hedgehog, who knows one big thing, toils devotedly within one tradition, and imposes formulaic solutions on ill-defined problems. He notes a perversely inverse relationship between the best scientific indicators of good judgement and the qualities that the media most prizes in pundits--the single-minded determination required to prevail in ideological combat.

Clearly written and impeccably researched, the book fills a huge void in the literature on evaluating expert opinion. It will appeal across many academic disciplines as well as to corporations seeking to develop standards for judging expert decision-making. Now with a new preface in which Tetlock discusses the latest research in the field, the book explores what constitutes good judgment in predicting future events and looks at why experts are often wrong in their forecasts.

Описание: In Finding Truth in Fiction, two media psychologists reveal that there's much more to our desire to seek out stories in film, TV, and books than simple diversion - fiction can help us find truth in our real lives. Whether you consider yourself a fan of popular media or whether you find yourself thinking of a particular fictional scene for inspiration, you are not alone. Though some assume that interest in a fictional world is a sign of psychological trouble, the authors enthusiastically disagree.

Because story worlds are simulations of our social world, we use them to make sense of our experiences and even decide what kind of people we want to be. This makes fiction far from trivial. By exploring our relationship with fictional stories and characters, the authors will examine how we create mental models in our minds so we can understand stories and charactersand how we differentiate between the identities of characters and the actors who play them.

What story arcs, such as the hero's journey, are we drawn to again and again? How do the moments that strike us as important in a story change as we age and move through different stages in our life? Delving into these questions and many more, the authors conclude that being a fan is not just healthy, it's human.

Are you looking for a guide to discover the hidden personality secrets? Do you want to learn how to split up from an emotionally destructive marriage and co-parenting with a toxic ex? If yes, then keep reading...

An empath is someone so sensitive that deeply feels other people's emotions as if it was their own. Empaths do not see the world as any random person would. Their point of view is different. They have this amazing ability where they can feel what others around them are thinking or feeling. If you are thinking that being an empath if all gloomy as you are taking on the pain of others, well it is not. Empaths are amazing friends. This is because they are keen listeners and they always try to show up for their friends.

An empath can feel any emotion that another person in front of them is feeling, be it happiness, guilt, depression, or anger. Even if the person in front of an empath does not show his/her feelings, an empath will be able to pick it up.

You need to remember that there is a difference between simply feeling bad and being an empath. Empaths absorb the emotions in front of them. It is still a matter of debate as to how empaths can do this. But one thing has been noticed through research and that is - empaths usually have highly active mirror neurons.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or NPD, is a recognized personality disorder that falls under the mental health spectrum or umbrella.

Whilst there are many people walking the streets who have very strong narcissistic traits, they may not meet all the criteria to be completely diagnosed with NPD itself.

There are many different types of narcissists, and there are varying degrees of severity. You might meet someone who is a very mild narcissist, and you only really notice their behavior occasionally. However, you may also meet someone who is a full-blown, raging narcissist, and this is the type of person who you really cannot have a healthy or long-lasting relationship with. In addition, there are the very worst types of narcissists, who share some of the same traits with sociopaths and psychopaths. Whilst these are rare, it's important to be aware of them.

This book covers the following topics:

- What is empath?

Why good people do bad environmental things

Описание: No one sets out to intentionally cause environmental problems. All things being equal, we are happy to protect environmental resources; in fact, we tend to prefer our air cleaner and our species protected. But despite not wanting to create environmental problems, we all do so regularly in the
course of living our everyday lives. Why do we behave in ways that cause environmental harm?

It is often easy and inexpensive to behave in ways with bad environmental consequences, but more difficult and costly to take environmentally friendly actions. The incentives we face, some created by the nature of environmental resources, some by social and political structures, often do not make
environmentally beneficial behavior the most likely choice. Furthermore, our behavior is conditioned by habits and social norms that fail to take environmental protection into consideration.

In this book, Elizabeth R. DeSombre integrates research from political science, sociology, psychology, and economics to understand why bad environmental behavior makes perfect sense. As she notes, there is little evidence that having more information about environmental problems or the way an
individual's actions contribute to them changes behavior in meaningful ways, and lack of information is rarely the underlying cause that connects behavior to harm. In some cases such knowledge may even backfire, as people come to see themselves as powerless to address huge global problems and
respond by pushing these issues out of their minds. The fact that causing environmental problems is never anyone's primary goal means that people are happy to stop causing them if the alternative behavior still accomplishes their underlying goals. If we can figure out why those problems are caused,
when no one intends to cause them, we can develop strategies that work to shift behavior in a positive direction. Over the course of this book, DeSombre considers the role of structure, incentives, information, habit, and norms on behavior in order to formulate lessons about how these factors lead
to environmentally problematic behavior, and what understanding their effects can tell us about ways to change behavior. To prevent or address environmental problems, we have to understand why even good people do bad environmental things.

Описание:

This book addresses the need to radically transform societies plagued by racism. It places prominence on persistent racialized violence in the lives of Black Americans as influential in how Black people in the U.S. and abroad perceive themselves as Black in juxtaposition to their perceptions of White people and other People of Color. An absence of understanding of the often-masked role of violence in the lives of Black people increases the likelihood of reproducing it. The author offers a reformulation of racial identity theory to examine the construction of Manichaeism in people and societies, and how meaningful engagement that confronts the violence is vital to psychological development, though this engagement also is not without dire risks.
