Описание: Evolution and the Human-Animal Drive to Conflict examines how fundamental, universal animal drives, such as dominance/prevalence, survival, kinship, and "profit" (greed, advantage, whether of material or social nature), provide the basis for the evolutionary trap that promotes the unstable, conflictive, dominant-prone individual and group human behaviours. Examining this behavioural tension, this book argues that while these innate features set up behaviours that lean towards aggression influenced by social inequalities, the means implemented to defuse them resort to emotional and intellectual strategies that sponsor fanaticism and often reproduce the very same behaviours they intend to defuse. In addressing these concerns, the book argues that we should enhance our resources to promote solidarity, accept cultural differences, deter expansionist and uncontrolled profit drives, and achieve collective access towards knowledge and progress in living conditions. This entails promoting the redistribution of resources and creative labour access and avoiding policies that generate a fragmented world with collective and individual development disparities that invite and encourage dominance behaviours. This resource redistribution asserts that it is necessary to reformulate the global set of human priorities towards increased access to better living conditions, cognitive enhancement, a more amiable interaction with the ecosystem and non-aggressive cultural differences, promote universal access to knowledge, and enhance creativity and cultural convivence. These behavioural changes entail partial derangement of our ancestral animal drives camouflaged under different cultural profiles until the species succeeds in replacing the dominance of basic animal drives with prosocial, collective ones. Though it entails a formidable task of confronting financial, military, and religious powers and cultural inertias – human history is also a challenging, cont

Symptom Fluctuation in Fibromyalgia: Environmental, Psychological and Psychobiological Influences

Описание: Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of wide spread pain that is known from all parts of the world. An aspect of the syndrome of fibromyalgia is fluctuation as in onset of pain, variation in the level of symptoms, time off from pain and recovery from pain and other symptoms. The analysis of these fluctuations might create a basis for solid suggestions regarding the nature of the syn-drome itself. E.g. the pain level is well known to vary with mental and physical load including exposure to cold. Simultaneously, fibromyalgia has been found to mean an altered balance in the autonomic nervous system. In the first section of the book a developmental stage or life before fibromyalgia is covered. Intra- and interpersonal patterns based on narrations of the afflicted are pictured. Identified patterns are psychometrically examined and environmental as well as psychobiological patterns are accounted for. In the mid-section of the book life with fibromyalgia is scrutinized including biomarkers. Patterns regarding variation in the level of pain, gaps in fibromyalgia pain and environmental factors influencing these gaps are related. The effect on life, symptoms and defense measures is elucidated from the angle of mental load. The last sections portrait psychological and environmental influences concerning recovery, but especially the striking phenomenon of recovery being scarce. Special attention is paid to cognitive-emotional functioning, the need to target dissociation and environmental influences on maintenance.

Psychobiological, Clinical, and Educational Aspects of Giftedness

Описание: General estimations propose that 3-5% of the child population worldwide shows different degrees of giftedness for performing of outstanding talents. Giftedness is thought to represent an advantage for social adaptation due to the higher intellectual capabilities over average people. However, several studies show that eminent adults are significantly less than gifted children, suggesting that a great number of talented children are lost. On the other hand, gifted children often show several psychosocial abnormalities such as social isolation (which likely leads to eventual depressive disorders), aggressive behavior (commonly related to incomprehension by close relatives), bullying and a varying degrees of academic performance among other stressors related with scholarly life. Giftedness is frequently confused with some psychopathological alterations; the subsequent medication is a clinical action with unpredictable consequences that may affect the outstanding talents and general mental health of gifted children. These and other biopsychosocial factors make gifted children (and adults) a vulnerable social group. Thus, based on the relatively scarce scientific literature related to giftedness, the content of this book aims to integrate the factors of some of the neurobiological, psychological, social, and educational aspects related to giftedness into common knowledge, and it may also be useful for professionals dedicated to the scientific study and clinical or educational attention of gifted children.

Psychobiological Principles of the Memory Process

Описание: Memory is a cognitive process that has been addressed widely in scientific study. In fact, the number of original research articles that have attempted to characterise memory from different approaches is so vast that integrating the knowledge derived from this extensive body of scientific research makes formal compilations, such as the one offered to the reader in this book, necessary. Psychobiological Principles of the Memory Process is a particularly useful book by virtue of the fact that it addresses genetic, molecular, cellular, and systematic aspects related to the organisation and performance of memory, under both normal conditions and those associated with pathology, and because it examines clinical and experimental approaches throughout development. The 7 chapters that make up the book were written with a homogeneous structure and in clear, concise scientific language that is adequate for specialists and science students, but is also accessible to non-specialised, or amateur, neuroscience readers.

Описание: This book provides a series of compelling evidence that shows that humans have innate fear of snakes. Building on the previous studies on the Snake Detection Theory (SDT), the author presents a summary of psychological and neuropsychological experiments to explain the fear of snakes in humans and primates. Readers will come to understand why and how we are afraid of snakes from an evolutionary perspective. The first half of the book discusses the history of psychological behaviorism and neobehaviorism. The latter half of the book consists mainly of the experimental studies performed by the author with a focus on three key items: First, compared with other animals, snakes especially draw the attention of primates and humans. Second, the ability of primates and humans to recognize snakes with particular efficiency. Third, processing mechanisms within the brain for snake detection is discussed from a new viewpoint. The book offers a unique resource for all primatologists, psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, herpetologists, and biologists who are interested in the evolution of visual and cognitive systems, mechanisms of fear, snakes or primates.
