Using Schelling’s philosophy, Ben Woodard examines how an expanded form of naturalism changes how we conceive of the division between thought and world, mathematics and motion, sense and dynamics, experiment and materiality, as well as speculation and pragmatism. Nature, in Schelling’s eyes, is not the great outdoors or some authentic pastoral realm, but the various powers, processes and tendencies which run through biology, chemistry, physics and the very possibility of thought itself.

Описание: Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was an eminent German Lutheran theologian, philosopher, and comparative religionist, who is regarded as one of the most influential scholars of religion in the early 20th century. He is best known for his theory of numinous, a profound emotional experience he argued was at the heart of the world's religions. Otto evntually came to conceive his work as part of a science of religion which was divided into the philosophy of religion, the history of religion, and the psychology of religion. His first book was Naturalism and Religion (1904) which divides the world ontologically into the mental and the physical, a position reflecting Cartesian dualism. He argues that consciousness cannot be explained in terms of physical or neural processes, further arguing that all knowledge of the physical world is mediated by personal experience. In his preface to this English translation of 1907 the Rev W D Morrison notes that Dr Otto possesses the rare merit of combining a high philosophic discipline with an accurate and comprehensive knowledge of the science of organic nature, allowing him to comment authoritatively on the debate concerning the religious and the non-religious conception of human life and destiny.

Описание: Naturalism and Democracy , first published in German in 2014, presents a long-awaited commentary on Spinoza’s Political Treatise (Tractatus politicus) . Its contents reflect a recent intensification in the interest in Spinoza’s political philosophy in Germany. The volume addresses Spinoza’s political philosophy according to its place within his philosophical system as a whole, beginning with his theory of the natural genesis of law and state. Following from this are commentaries on the foundations of political philosophy, the relation of natural and state law, the theory of sovereignty, and theory of international relations. These chapters lay the basis for four essays interpreting Spinoza’s attempt to conceive of a systematic optimization of political and legal institutions for all three forms of governance (monarchy, aristocracy, democracy). The volume closes with an analysis of the current relevance of Spinoza’s political thinking and his influence on contemporary debates.
Today the ethical and normative concerns of everyday citizens are all too often sidelined from the study of political and social issues, driven out by an effort to create a more “scientific” study. This book offers a way for social scientists and political theorists to reintegrate the empirical and the normative, proposing a way out of the scientism that clouds our age. In Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, and the Demise of Naturalism, Jason Blakely argues that the resources for overcoming this divide are found in the respective intellectual developments of Charles Taylor and Alasdair MacIntyre. Blakely examines their often parallel intellectual journeys, which led them to critically engage the British New Left, analytic philosophy, phenomenology, continental hermeneutics, and modern social science. Although MacIntyre and Taylor are not sui generis, Blakely claims they each present a new, revived humanism, one that insists on the creative agency of the human person against reductive, instrumental, technocratic, and scientistic ways of thinking. The recovery of certain key themes in these philosophers’ works generates a new political philosophy with which to face certain unprecedented problems of our age. Taylor’s and MacIntyre’s philosophies give social scientists working in all disciplines (from economics and sociology to political science and psychology) an alternative theoretical framework for conducting research.
