Did Abner Doubleday or Al Spalding or someone in earlier days invent 'BASEBALL'? It really doesn't matter, does it? e really important fact is that the game of baseball was invented in the 1800's. e game has captivated boys, men, women and girls ever since.
How a pitcher can get a baseball to dance as it crosses home plate or how a batter can manipulate a bat to strike that same baseball traveling at 90 mph has become legend. Ted Williams has been quoted in saying, "Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in Sports." Thousands upon thousands of dollars are spent watching, coaching, analyzing, and performing that one task.
The game of baseball is most definitely a team sport. It takes nine talented players to perfect the in's and out's of this widely viewed athletic event. e nine players each in turn must swing a bat and compete against a seasoned artist expertly trying to get that ball past his bat. Twenty seven chances to win with twenty seven outs spelling the difference. This is America's Favorite Past Time.
In this book, I relate personal experiences from my youth through my adult years which are all hinged around the sport of Baseball. Stories from my bat-boy days to pitching in AAA ball. I have played the game in dozens of cities in the United States as well as in many different countries. My experiences are not that unusual from those performed by others. A deep sense of satisfaction and comradery has developed while I have competed. ese stories are true and are very similar to experiences possessed by a vast throng of athletes all over the world. Sit back and reminisce about your days playing sandlot ball with good friends and family. Or having made it to the Big Leagues and relishing the smell of the ball park. e legends of the game are there for everyone to enjoy. Take a step back in time with me within the pages of this bound road trip.

If you can throw a 95 MPH fastball -or hit one- your teammates don't care what color you are, how pretty you are, or where you came from. They just know you can play. That's all they need to know.
Matt Wolf doesn't remember his past. Or what he used to look like. Or his real name. But the four people who rescue him from a devastating plane crash, do know...everything. Including that the world, including his wife, think Dylan Michael, the greatest baseball player of a generation, died in that crash.
As fans mourn Dylan's loss, Matt heals. While his face will never look the same, his body recovers and is stronger than ever. By chance, he realizes he may have played baseball at one time. As his talent resurfaces, it's clear he has major league ability, maybe super-star ability. But there's a catch; his past can't be discovered, or he could spend years in prison.
To reach his dream of returning to "The Show" Matt will need the help of everyone in the small town of Blossom, South Carolina. Problem is, Matt is a white guy and Blossom is a nearly all Black town. A town not really all that fond of white guys, even former big leaguers.
He will need to prove to the people of Blossom he's more than a baseball player.
MEET MARK
Mark Donahue is, first and foremost, a storyteller. As far back as high school, he had the gift of creative literary invention. His ability to create compelling characters, and stories continues to captivate readers.
For years, Mark's writing talents were just a hobby, shared only by those closest to him. But his wife, Marsha, an avid reader, urged him to write a book. "Your stuff's better than most of the things I read. Sit down and write a damn book." She said... kind of lovingly.
Finally, he did. The result was Last At Bat, a critically acclaimed story spanning topics from baseball and race, to love and loss. And redemption. All expertly woven in a tapestry of drama, excitement, romance, tears, and cheers. An author was born.
Mark isn't defined by any one genre; "I write stories I'd like to read." That includes historical fiction, twisted dramas, political thrillers, and sci-fi. He creates enthralling, "I couldn't put the damn book down," kinds of stories. His six novels feature gripping plots, and characters who become the reader's best friends.
Before becoming an author, he played basketball at Wright State University where he was captain and MVP. Later, he played in the Men's Senior Baseball League where his teams won 5 World Series Championships.
But he was more than a jock. He also enjoyed a successful, 35-year career in commercial real estate and served on the Operations Management Board of CBRE, and CEO of Prudential CRES.
After moving around the country for his career, Mark is back in his hometown of Dayton, where he lives with Marsha, their dog, Mik

Late in 1937 Hugh Alexander, a kid fresh out of small-town Oklahoma, had just finished his second year playing outfield for the Cleveland Indians when an oil rig accident ripped off his left hand. Within three months he was back with the Indians, but this time as a scout—the youngest ever in Major League history. In the next six decades he signed more players who made it to the Majors than any other scout.
His story, Baseball’s Last Great Scout, reads like a backroom, bleacher-seat history of twentieth-century baseball—and a primer on what it takes to find a winner. It gives a gritty picture of learning the business on the road, from American Legion field to try-out camp to beer joint, and making the fine distinctions between “performance” and “tools of the trade” when checking out prospects. Over the years Alexander worked for the Indians, the White Sox, the LA Dodgers, the Phillies, and the Cubs—and signed the likes of Allie Reynolds, Don Sutton, and Marty Bystrom. This book, based on extensive interviews and Alexander’s journals, is filled with memorable characters, pithy lessons, snapshots of American life, and a big picture of America’s pastime from one of its great off-the-field players.

In the watershed year of 1962, events and people came together to reshape baseball like never before. The season saw five no-hitters, a rare National League playoff between the Giants and the Dodgers, and a thrilling seven-game World Series where the Yankees, led by Mickey Mantle, won their twentieth title, beating the San Francisco Giants, led by Willie Mays, in their first appearance since leaving New York.
Baseball was expanding with the Houston Colt .45s and the New York Mets, who tried to fill the National League void in New York but finished with 120 losses and the worst winning percentage since 1900. Despite their record, the ’62 Mets revived National League baseball in a city thirsty for an alternative to the Yankees. As the team struggled through a disastrous first year, manager Casey Stengel famously asked, “Can’t anybody here play this game?”
Earlier that year in Los Angeles, Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley launched Dodger Stadium, a state-of-the-art ballpark in Chavez Ravine and a new icon for the city. For the Dodgers, Sandy Koufax pitched his first of four career no-hitters, Maury Wills set a record for stolen bases in a season, and Don Drysdale won twenty-five games.
Beyond baseball, 1962 was also a momentous year in American history: Mary Early became the first Black graduate of the University of Georgia, First Lady Jackie Kennedy revealed the secrets of the White House in a television special, John Glenn became the first astronaut to orbit Earth, and JFK stared down Russia during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Weaving the 1962 baseball season within the social fabric of this era, David Krell delivers a fascinating book as epochal as its subject.

Описание: As the anchor titles in a new "Time Machine" Lyons Press baseball series, The Ultimate Cleveland Indians Time Machine presents a timeline format that not only includes the Indians' greatest moments-including World Series appearances and individual achievements-but would focus also on some very unusual seasons and events, such as the team's 20-134 season of 1899 (the absolute worst in baseball history), the "Crybabies" of 1940 (who received this nickname after complaining about their manager to such as extent that fans even turned on them), or the infamous "Ten Cent Beer Night of 1974" (when thousands of drunken fans stormed the field and forced the team to forfeit). Of course there are other events to recall, like 17-year-old Bob Feller making his debut and striking out 17 batters in 1936, or Albert Belle famously pointing at his muscle after a playoff opponent claimed (rightly) that he had corked his bat and one of his teammates sneaked into the umpire's room to steal it back so the umps could not find out that it was corked. There are dozens of impressive, wild, wacky and wonderful stories over the years regarding Indians history and Gitlin is the perfect person to write it with his trademark humor and thorough knowledge of Indians lore.

Описание: "Dave Mellor has built one of baseball's most inspirational stories over the last half-century. Anchored by a love for his family and the game, he survived incomprehensible catastrophes and PTSD to become a pioneering ballfield artist and head groundskeeper for Fenway Park."--Buster Olney, ESPN On July 10, 1981, David Mellor was just a baseball-crazed kid, a star high school pitcher preparing to go to college and dreaming of one day taking the mound in Fenway Park for his beloved Boston Red Sox. His dream was derailed as he crossed the parking lot of a McDonald's. He heard the racing engine, but couldn't defend himself against the car coming straight at him. It sent him flying through the air and into a wall, where it hit him again and pinned him, severely damaging his knee and destroying his hope of ever being a Major League pitcher. In the wake of the accident, even as he reached the major leagues as a groundskeeper, David was tortured by the aftermath of his injuries and additional traumas, including being struck by a car again, this time in the outfield of Milwaukee's County Stadium while he was working on overhauling the field for the Milwaukee Brewers. He suffered terribly from anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks, completely unaware that he was experiencing the debilitating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly known as PTSD. One Base at a Time recounts in vivid detail his subsequent twenty-nine-year struggle with PTSD. This harrowing but inspiring story, documents the remarkable journey of a man debilitated by physical and psychological injuries who refused to give up even when everything seemed hopeless. After a fortuitous event, he admitted to needing help, sought effective treatment and turned his life around. It's a powerful, helpful outline of the steps one needs to take to overcome the powerful hold PTSD has on one's life. One Base at a Time is a must read for anyone suffering in silence or anyone who knows someone suffering in the wake of severe traumatic events. Those who seem broken can be fixed and live a happy, fulfilling life. "Dave is a truly unique person. His passion, hard work, creativity, and love for baseball gives life to Fenway Park. It gives intensity to us as ball players and pushes us to put on a show night after night. Dave is as much a part of the Red Sox team as anyone and his life and the adversity he has overcome is really inspiring."--David "Big Papi" Ortiz "The true star of Fenway Park is not one of the Red Sox players; it is the esteemed groundskeeper David Mellor. This is a powerful memoir, taking David from his days as a potential big league pitcher through the time when, after his dreams came to a traumatic halt, he battled PTSD and eventually returned to the diamond after conquering his demons. It is an inspiring story, and I encourage all baseball fans to read this motivating book."--Tom Werner, Chairman of the Boston Red Sox "Every now and then someone really special comes into your life. David Mellor is one of those special people. Whether he's hand cutting the infield grass or making it possible for 30,000 people to run across the plate at Fenway you know you are in the presence of greatness. If you feel the need for inspiration or motivation, read his book, get up off the couch and get back in the game."--Lenny Clarke, Comedian/Actor "David's long battle with PTSD and chronic debilitating pain, all while he worked a demanding job full time, is a powerful story that will help many who suffer silently with these conditions. You cannot help but be captivated and inspired by his road to recovery, fueled by a determination to never give up, never give in." --Padma Gulur MD, Professor of Anesthesiology, Vice Chair, Operations and Performance, Department of Anesthesiology, Duke University "The reality is that PTSD is not only found in men and women retu
