The Dharmasastra ascribed to Yajnavalkya, commonly called Yajnavalkya Smrti, is a text on religious, civil, and criminal law and jurisprudence composed around the fourth or fifth century during the reign of the Guptas. It represents the culmination of a thousand-year-old legal tradition. Precision of thought and expression and technical legal terminology distinguish it from its predecessors, such as the early Dharmasutras and the treatise of Manu. Besides the quotidian life of people, the text illuminates major cultural innovations, such as the prominence given to documents in commercial and legal matters, the importance of ordeals in resolving disputes, and the growing importance of Yoga in religious practice.

The treatise became the most influential legal text in medieval India, and, as interpreted by the twelfth century commentator Vijnanesvara, came to be considered 'the law of the land' under British rule. In spite of its recognized importance for the ancient and medieval legal traditions, the Sanskrit text has never before been critically edited. This critical edition, along with the translation published in the Murty Classical Library of India, open to modern readers both the 'golden age' of the Guptas and a central text in the long and distinguished Indian legal tradition.

After Bhishma is cut down at the end of the previous book of the Maha·bh?rata, the book which bears his name, Dury?dhana selects Drona as leader of his forces. Drona accepts the honor with Bhishma's blessing, despite his ongoing personal conflicts as mentor to both the P?ndava and K?urava heroes in their youth. The fighting rages on, with heavy losses on both sides. Furious and frustrated, Dury?dhana accuses Drona of collaborating with the enemy, but he replies that as long as ?rjuna is on the field, the P?ndavas will remain invincible. When ?rjuna is finally diverted from the main action of the battle, Yudhi·shthira entrusts ?rjuna's son Abhim?nyu with the task of making a breach in the K?urava formation. Abhim?nyu rampages through Drona's army, but at last is cornered by several K?urava warriors and finally killed by Jayad·ratha.

Описание: It is often assumed that classical Sanskrit poetry and drama lack a concern with the tragic. However, as Bihani Sarkar makes clear in this book, this is far from the case. In the first study of tragedy in classical Sanskrit literature, Sarkar draws on a wide range of Sanskrit dramas, poems and treatises – much of them translated for the first time into English – to provide a complete history of the tragic in Indian literature from the second to the fourth centuries. Looking at Kalidasa, the most celebrated writer of Sanskrit poetry and drama (kavya), this book argues that constructions of absence and grief are central to Kalidasa’s compositions and that these ‘tragic middles’ are much more sophisticated than previously understood. For Kalidasa, tragic middles are modes of thinking, in which he confronts theological and philosophical issues. Through a close literary analysis of the tragic middle in five of his works, the Abhijnanasakuntala, the Raghuva?sa, the Kumarasambhava, the Vikramorvasiya and the Meghaduta, Sarkar demonstrates the importance of tragedy for classical Indian poetry and drama in the early centuries of the common era. These depictions from the Indian literary sphere, by their particular function and interest in the phenomenology of grief, challenge and reshape in a wholly new way our received understanding of tragedy.
