An integrated approach to understanding and mitigating the problem of excess nitrogen
Human activities generate large amounts of excess nitrogen, which has dramatically altered the nitrogen cycle. Reactive forms of nitrogen, especially nitrate and ammonia, are particularly detrimental. Given the magnitude of the problem, there is an urgent need for information on reactive nitrogen and its effective management.
Nitrogen Overload: Environmental Degradation, Ramifications, and Economic Costs presents an integrated, multidisciplinary review of alterations to the nitrogen cycle over the past century and the wide-ranging consequences of nitrogen-based pollution, especially to aquatic ecosystems and human health.
Volume highlights include:
Comprehensive background information on the nitrogen cycle
Detailed description of anthropogenic nitrogen sources
Review of the environmental, economic, and health impacts of nitrogen pollution
Recommendations and strategies for reducing humanity's nitrogen footprint
Discussion of national nitrogen footprints and worldwide examples of mitigation policies

Nitrogen is abundant in the Earth's atmosphere, but it exists primarily as an unreactive form that is relatively inaccessible by most organisms. Although the formation of reactive nitrogen is a natural process, it can be dramatically altered by human activities such as biomass burning, combustion of fossil fuels, and production of synthetic fertilizers, which collectively account for half of the reactive nitrogen in the environment. In Nitrogen Overload, Katz (2020) explores the costs and benefits associated with anthropogenic releases of reactive nitrogen at a global scale.
This 251В page book consists of 11 chapters that are organized in three sections: background information (chapters 1-4), implications (chapters 5-10), and mitigation (chapter 11) for reactive nitrogen in the environment. The first section provides information on the biogeochemistry and scale of nitrogen pollution, with chapter 1 presenting an overview of the main topics covered in the book. Chapter 2 examines the effects of human activities on the preindustrial "natural" nitrogen cycle, which Katz (2020) asserts "has been altered more than the carbon cycle or any other basic element cycle essential to life on earth (e.g., phosphorus, sulfur)." Chapter 3 discusses the major sources of nitrogen pollution to terrestrial and aquatic systems, particularly for North America, Europe, Latin America, and India, and chapter 4 describes techniques for identifying sources of reactive nitrogen with chemical, isotopic, and microbial tracers.
The remaining chapters explore the impacts, sources, and challenges for mitigation of nitrogen pollution. Chapter 5 discusses the human health impacts of reactive nitrogen, including respiratory ailments from NOx emissions and secondary production of tropospheric ozone, methemoglobinemia from elevated nitrate in drinking water, and respiratory and skin ailments from exposure to harmful algal blooms. Chapter 6 examines the impacts of reactive nitrogen on terrestrial and coastal aquatic ecosystems. Notably, Katz (2020) cites a decline in global seagrass cover by more than 29% during the last century, but also a recovery of aquatic

Описание: This textbook discusses environmental and natural resource economics. It presents foundational knowledge for applying economics to understand environmental economics as well as for managing environmental problems and optimizing the level of natural resource extraction. Environmental and Natural Resource Economics bridges knowledge between the major natural environmental issues and which economic policies could be applied for reducing human impacts on such issues. It is distinctive from other environmental economics textbooks by covering not only basic concepts introduced in environmental economics but also explains economic models developed in resource economics for optimizing the use of non-renewable and renewable resources for sustainability. This textbook will help students understand how to apply economics for utilizing policies to mitigate environmental issues caused from the output side of economic activities such as emitting pollutants or generating wastes and those derived from the input side such as natural resource extractions.

Описание: Dynamic and Stochastic Resource Economics: Essays on Biodiversity, Invasive Species, Joint Systems, and Regulation is a collection of Professor Batabyal's previously published and unpublished papers on the subject of natural resource and environmental economics. The book demonstrates how new dynamic and probabilistic techniques can be profitably used to study a whole host of research questions in natural resource management, biological diversity, ecological economics, invasive species management, and environmental regulation. The book collects the results of frontier-level research in many different areas within the general field of natural resource and environmental economics. It also shows how theoretical modeling, frequently using techniques that are unfamiliar to economists, can be gainfully utilized to shed new light on a whole host of issues, some of which have not been modeled previously in a comprehensive manner. Finally, this book draws connections between the different areas that are covered so as to provide a common methodological approach to research questions and a unified perspective on the key issues in natural resource and environmental economics.
This book brings together geological, biological, radical economic, technological, historical and social perspectives on peak oil and other scarce resources. The contributors to this volume argue that these scarcities will put an end to the capitalist system as we know it and alternatives must be created. The book combines natural science with emancipatory thinking, focusing on bottom up alternatives and social struggles to change the world by taking action. The volume introduces original contributions to the debates on peak oil, land grabbing and social alternatives, thus creating a synthesis to gain an overview of the multiple crises of our times.
The book sets out to analyse how crises of energy, climate, metals, minerals and the soil relate to the global land grab which has accelerated greatly since 2008, as well as to examine the crisis of profit production and political legitimacy. Based on a theoretical understanding of the multiple crises and the effects of peak oil and other scarcities on capital accumulation, the contributors explore the social innovations that provide an alternative.
Using the most up to date research on resource crises, this integrative and critical analysis brings together the issues with a radical perspective on possibilites for future change as well as a strong social economic and ethical dimesion. The book should be of interest to researchers and students of environmental policy, politics, sustainable development and natural resource management.
