Описание: This monograph is dedicated to the lives and scientific achievements of the physiology pioneers Warren and Margaret Lewis. Their story spans the first half of the 20th century, from their respective educations through early, independent research to joint research from 1910 to 1955. Among the numerous developments they initiated, were the discovery of pinocytosis, the beginnings of video microscopy and the development of the first mammalian tissue cultures. Their research expanded the theoretical knowledge of cell structure and function. On a more practical level, they advanced many laboratory methods, like the first recipes for culture media. The text is beautifully enriched with personal anecdotes about their lives. This is the story of two scientific pioneers in the context of early 20th century biology and physiology. It is an inspiration for senior and aspiring researchers.

Описание: Glia, the non-neuronal cells in the nervous systems, are both passive and active participants in diverse arrays of neuronal function. The diversity of glial cells in various animal species appears to be correlated with the complexity of brains. In the animal Drosophila melanogaster , glia are similarly categorized to their mammalian counterparts in morphology and function. Surface glia cover the outermost surface of the brain and function as a blood-brain-barrier to protect the nervous system. Cortex glia, similar to mammalian astrocytes, enwrap around the neuronal cell bodies and provide trophic support. Neuropil glia, similar to mammalian astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, are closely associated with the synapse-enriched neuropils and regulate synapse formation, synaptic function, and underlie the mechanism of circuit and behavior. This short monograph focuses on Drosophila glia, discusses the classification of different glial subtypes and their developmental origins, and provides an overview of different glial-mediated activity crucial for the development and function of the nervous system. This context serves as a general introduction to the molecular and cellular basis of glial function in normal and pathological brains.

Описание: Polyamines are organic cations found in all eukaryotic cells and intimately involved in, and required for, distinct biological functions. An increasing body of evidence indicates that the regulation of cellular polyamines is a central convergence point for the multiple signaling pathways driving various cellular functions. Over the last decade, considerable progress has been made in und- standing the molecular functions of cellular polyamines. These significant findings provide a fundamental basis to not only define the exact role of polyamines in physiology, but also to develop new therapeutic approaches for cancers and other diseases. The major objective of this book is to provide a timely and long lasting guide for investigators in the fields of polyamines, physiology, pharmacology, and cancer research. It will provide a foundation based on research and address the potential for subsequent applications in clinical practice. Polyamine Cell Signaling: Physiology, Pharmacology, and Cancer Research is divided into four main parts: Part I: Polyamines in Signal Transduction of Cell Proliferation Part II: Polyamines in Cellular Signaling of Apoptosis, Carcinogenesis, and Cancer Therapy Part III: Polyamines in Cell Motility and Cell-Cell Interactions Part IV: Polyamine Homeostasis and Transport This book not only covers the current state-of-the-art findings relevant to cellular and molecular functions of polyamines, but also provides the underlying conceptual basis and knowledge regarding potential therapeutic targeting of polyamines and polyamine metabolism. These points are addressed by int- nationally recognized experts in their contributions to this book.

Описание: About ten years aga devices and equipment were developed for producing quantitative images in vivo of the distribution of substanees with positron- emitting radionuclide label of very short half-life (down to only several minutes). The positron-emitting isotopes can be the most important bio- elements and are, therefore, suitable for the labeling of important physio- logie substrates like sugars, amino acids ete. and their synthetic analogues. Their imaging, after distribution in vivo, is being performed by PET scan- ning systems. It soon became apparent that positron-emission tomography could be very useful in the field of cancer biology, diagnostics and therapy. Trans- port, influx and efflux, metabolism of suitable labeled substrates around and in tumors can be followed over aperiod oftime, thus allowing the - calization oftumors and - equally important - the efficiency (or non-effi- ciency) of any given therapeutic regimen. For this purpose 13N-Iabeled amino acids, especially glutamate, or l1C_ and 18P-labeled glucose deri- vates were introduced and are already being recommended for the study of special tumors in experimental animals and man, such as brain tumors or osteosarcomas. Some glucose derivatives were developed which differ in their metabolie (enzymatic) fate. In this way, combined application of compounds, like 18F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxy- and rtC]-3-0-methyl-D-glucose are "expected to provide the most important imaging in tumor diagno- stics" (M. Hatanaka). In principle, tlJmor chemotherapy and other therapeutic approaches can now be followed continuously.
