Swallow Press first published Winter of Artifice in 1945, following two vastly different versions from other presses. The book opens with a film star, Stella, studying her own, but alien, image on the screen. It ends in the Manhattan office of a psychoanalyst—the Voice—who, as he counsels patients suffering from the maladies of modern life, reveals himself as equally susceptible to them. The middle, title story explores one of Nin’s most controversial themes, that of a woman’s sexual relationship with her father. Elliptical, fragmented prose; unconventional structure; surrealistic psychic landscapes—Nin forged these elements into a style that engaged with the artistic concerns of her time but still registers as strikingly contemporary.
This reissue, accompanied by a new introduction by Laura Frost and the original engravings by Nin’s husband Ian Hugo, presents an important opportunity to consider anew the work of an author who laid the groundwork for later writers. Swallow Press’s Winter of Artifice represents a literary artist coming into her own, with the formal experimentation, thematic daring, and psychological intrigue that became her hallmarks.

Описание: Ideal for scholars of Hobbes, early modern historians, and political theorists, Christopher Scott McClure`s radical re-reading of Hobbes argues that the apparent inconsistencies in Hobbes` theories of political and religious philosophy were part of an intentional strategy to promote the fear of death and provoke his adversaries into inadvertently disseminating his message.

Описание: This book is the first comprehensive history and analysis of legal fictions in the common law. It examines their origins and development over the last 400 years and covers numerous legal domains from civil and criminal law to administrative and international law. It covers a wide range of British and American examples from corporate personhood and civil death to constructive eviction and the scintilla juris.Legal fictions have been a source of hostility, confusion, amusement, and fascination ever since British lawyers first turned their attention to the subject, in the early 17th century. The book presents a new theory of legal fictions, showing how certain doctrines take a distinctively artificial form that differentiates them from the routine artifice we see everywhere in the law. Whereas conventional accounts assert that falsity is the fiction’s essential requirement, Law’s Artifice shows that the fictions’ critics and defenders alike have always been drawn to examples that brazenly and ostentatiously present themselves as constructs, exhibiting a kind of artifice that includes falsehoods but is hardly limited to that category. Rather than attempting to establish criteria for deciding what qualifies as a legal fiction, this study seeks to understand why people perceive certain doctrines as fictional and how to make sense of the disagreement that sometimes arises. Doing so requires an understanding not only of legal history, but also of literary history and theory, philosophy of language, and aesthetics. Drawing on recent research in all of these fields, Law’s Artifice shows how concerns about legal fictions have persisted even as the contents of the category have changed over time.

Описание: Murray Pomerance, venerated film scholar, is the first to take on the 'cheat' in film, where 'cheating' constitutes a collection of production, performance, and structuring maneuvers intended to foster the impression of a screen reality that does not exist as presented. This usually calls for a suspension of disbelief in the viewer, but that rests on the assumption that disbelief is problematic for viewership, and that we must find some way to "suspend" or "disconnect" it in order to allow for the entertainment of the fiction in its own terms.
The Film Cheatexplores forty-five aspects of the 'cheat, ' analyzing classic films such as Singin' in the Rain and Chinatown, to more contemporary films like The Revenant and Baby Driver, with Pomerance engaging his encyclopedic knowledge of film history to point out numerous instances of suspensions of disbeliefs. Whether or not Gene Kelly is actually dancin' in the rain, or if Elliot is really flying on his bicycle carrying E.T., these cheats are what make movie magic.
Elegantly weaving the narrative for one to dip into at random or to read from cover to cover, Pomerance turns things upside down so that the audience actually finds pleasure in the cheat itself, pleasure in the disbelief. To see the elegant fake, the supremely accomplished simulacrum is a pleasure in its own right, indeed one of the fundamental pleasures of cinema.

Impersonations: The Artifice of Brahmin Masculinity in South Indian Dance centers on an insular community of Smarta Brahmin men from the Kuchipudi village in Telugu-speaking South India who are required to don stri-vesam (woman's guise) and impersonate female characters from Hindu religious narratives. Impersonation is not simply a gender performance circumscribed to the Kuchipudi stage, but a practice of power that enables the construction of hegemonic Brahmin masculinity in everyday village life. However, the power of the Brahmin male body in stri-vesam is highly contingent, particularly on account of the expansion of Kuchipudi in the latter half of the twentieth century from a localized village performance to a transnational Indian dance form. This book analyzes the practice of impersonation across a series of boundaries--village to urban, Brahmin to non-Brahmin, hegemonic to non-normative--to explore the artifice of Brahmin masculinity in contemporary South Indian dance.
Автор: Alan Howard Название: Compositional Artifice in the Music of Henry Purcell ISBN: 110700666X ISBN-13(EAN): 9781107006669 Издательство: Cambridge Academ Рейтинг: Цена: 95040.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Fugal invention has proved a successful line of analytical inquiry in recent studies of repertoires from Josquin to J. S. Bach. Alan Howard brings similar insights to the music of Henry Purcell, and proposes the first analytical approach to his music to examine compositional methods alongside historically contemporary theory, focusing particularly on Purcell's 'artificial' approach to imitative counterpoint. Through this methodology Howard challenges many misunderstandings about Purcell's music that led to him being categorized as old-fashioned and unimaginative. This study offers fresh insights into the musical world in which Purcell lived and worked and situates Purcell's compositional concerns in the broader context of notions of artifice in Restoration culture. Howard thereby offers both a fresh analytical approach - both to Purcell's early instrumental works and to his later concerted vocal music - and a critique of the reception history surrounding the fantazias and sonatas in particular.
