Описание:

Almost all materials are inhomogeneous at the microscale. Typical examples are fiber- and grain structures made of anisotropic phases. These cannot be accounted for in detail in engineering calculations. Instead, effective, homogeneous material properties are used. These are obtained from the inhomogeneous structures by homogenization methods. This book provides a structured overview of the analytical homogenization methods, including the most common estimates, bounds, and Fourier methods. The focus is on linear and anisotropic constitutive relationships, like Hookean elasticity and Fourier’s law for thermal conduction. All sections are accompanied by example calculations, including program code that is also available online.

Описание: Homogenization is a fairly new, yet deep field of mathematics which is used as a powerful tool for analysis of applied problems which involve multiple scales. Generally, homogenization is utilized as a modeling procedure to describe processes in complex structures. Applications of Homogenization Theory to the Study of Mineralized Tissue functions as an introduction to the theory of homogenization.

At the same time, the book explains how to apply the theory to various application problems in biology, physics and engineering. The authors are experts in the field and collaborated to create this book which is a useful research monograph for applied mathematicians, engineers and geophysicists. As for students and instructors, this book is a well-rounded and comprehensive text on the topic of homogenization for graduate level courses or special mathematics classes.

Features: Covers applications in both geophysics and biology. Includes recent results not found in classical books on the topic Focuses on evolutionary kinds of problems; there is little overlap with books dealing with variational methods and T-convergence Includes new results where the G-limits have different structures from the initial operators

Описание: Electromagnetic homogenization is the process of estimating the effective electromagnetic properties of composite materials in the long-wavelength regime, wherein the length scales of nonhomogeneities are much smaller than the wavelengths involved. This is a bird's-eye view of currently available homogenization formalisms for particulate composite materials. It presents analytical methods only, with focus on the general settings of anisotropy and bianisotropy. The authors largely concentrate on 'effective' materials as opposed to 'equivalent' materials, and emphasize the fundamental (but sometimes overlooked) differences between these two categories of homogenized composite materials. The properties of an 'effective' material represents those of its composite material, regardless of the geometry and dimensions of the bulk materials and regardless of the orientations and polarization states of the illuminating electromagnetic fields. In contrast, the properties of 'equivalent' materials only represent those of their corresponding composite materials under certain restrictive circumstances.

Описание: Biological homogenization is the dominant process shaping the future global biosphere. As global transportation becomes faster and more frequent, it is inevitable that biotic intermixing will increase. Unique local biotas will become extinct only to be replaced by already widespread biotas that can tolerate human activities.
