Masters of Mathematics: The Problems They Solved, Why These Are Important, and What You Should Know about Them

Описание: The original title for this work was “Mathematical Literacy, What Is It and Why You Need it”. The current title reflects that there can be no real learning in any subject, unless questions of who, what, when, where, why and how are raised in the minds of the learners. The book is not a mathematical text, and there are no assigned exercises or exams. It is written for reasonably intelligent and curious individuals, both those who value mathematics, aware of its many important applications and others who have been inappropriately exposed to mathematics, leading to indifference to the subject, fear and even loathing. These feelings are all consequences of meaningless presentations, drill, rote learning and being lost as the purpose of what is being studied. Mathematics education needs a radical reform. There is more than one way to accomplish this. Here the author presents his approach of wrapping mathematical ideas in a story. To learn one first must develop an interest in a problem and the curiosity to find how masters of mathematics have solved them. What is necessary to be mathematically literate? It’s not about solving algebraic equations or even making a geometric proof. These are valuable skills but not evidence of literacy. We often seek answers but learning to ask pertinent questions is the road to mathematical literacy. Here is the good news: new mathematical ideas have a way of finding applications. This is known as “the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics.”

The School Leadership Survival Guide: What to Do When Things Go Wrong, How to Learn from Mistakes, and Why You Should Prepare for the Worst

Описание: The School Leadership Survival Guide: What to Do When Things Go Wrong, How to Learn from Mistakes, and Why You Should Prepare for the Worst is intended as an uncommon guide for school leaders and a resource they can turn to when confronted with issues they might not normally face in typical practice. The book serves as a bridge between research and day-to-day school leadership, and is intended to help leaders and school communities improve in areas they routinely avoid. In this sense, the book is meant as a “go to” resource for principals, those who train and teach them, and scholars. Although authors recognize the complexity of issues raised in the book, each chapter has a “How to” “What to do” or “Why You Should” ethos in order to give the book a unifying structure and help provide a practical translation of research and theory into practice.

Some of the issues addressed include:

  • How to elevate student voice;
  • How to navigate religious conflict in the school and community;
  • How to improve support for LGBTIQ students;
  • Why You Should develop a natural disaster plan;
  • How to work against racism in the school and community;
  • How to practice inclusion in the school;
  • How to make a vision and mission come to life;
  • How to manage relationships with difficult people;
  • What to do when there is racial tension in the community;
  • How to learn the history of your school and community—and why that matters;
  • How to guide and support a leadership team, and;
  • What to do in a school with low trust

Описание: For five days a week for approximately nine months out of the year totaling countless hours, teachers work with other people's most treasured gifts-their children. That the teacher is the most important element in fostering an energetic, engaging, and inspiring classroom environment where authentic learning can unfold cannot be overstated. Indeed, it is the teacher who understands self or does not; it is the teacher who is prepared or is not; it is the teacher who has command of subject matter or does not; it is the teacher who inculcates in an appropriate way or does not; and, it is the teacher who is patient, understanding, empathetic, and enthusiastic or is not. To that end, Teaching With Purpose underscores what it means to be an insightful teacher, foundationally emphasizing that the central aspect toward richly transforming education is through the professionalization of what it means to be a teacher. Written in accessible language, and attentive to connecting theory to practice, the benefits and features of this book are mindful of a diverse readership.

Why You Can`T Teach United States History Without American Indians

Автор: Sleeper-Smith, Barr, O`Brien, Sh

Описание: A resource for all who teach and study history, this book illuminates the unmistakable centrality of American Indian history to the full sweep of American history. The nineteen essays gathered in this collaboratively produced volume, written by leading scholars in the field of Native American history, reflect the newest directions of the field and are organized to follow the chronological arc of the standard American history survey. Contributors reassess major events, themes, groups of historical actors, and approaches--social, cultural, military, and political--consistently demonstrating how Native American people, and questions of Native American sovereignty, have animated all the ways we consider the nation's past. The uniqueness of Indigenous history, as interwoven more fully in the American story, will challenge students to think in new ways about larger themes in U.S. history, such as settlement and colonization, economic and political power, citizenship and movements for equality, and the fundamental question of what it means to be an American.Contributors are Juliana Barr, Susan Sleeper-Smith, James D. Rice, Sarah M. S. Pearsall, Adam Jortner, Robert J. Miller, Jean M. O'Brien, Paul T. Conrad, Scott Manning Stevens, Jeffrey Ostler, Phillip H. Round, Mindy J. Morgan, John J. Laukaitis, David R. M. Beck, Rosalyn R. LaPier, Jacob Betz, Andrew Needham, Mikal Brotnov Eckstrom, Margaret D. Jacobs, K. Tsianina Lomawaima, and Chris Andersen.

Why Photography Matters

Описание:

A lucid and wide-ranging meditation on why photography is unique among the picture-making arts.

Photography matters, writes Jerry Thompson, because of how it works -- not only as an artistic medium but also as a way of knowing. With this provocative observation, Thompson begins a wide-ranging and lucid meditation on why photography is unique among the picture-making arts. He constructs an argument that moves with natural logic from Thomas Pynchon (and why we read him for his vision and not his command of miscellaneous facts) to Jonathan Swift to Plato to Emily Dickinson (who wrote "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant") to detailed readings of photographs by Eugene Atget, Garry Winogrand, Marcia Due, Walker Evans, and Robert Frank. Forcefully and persuasively, he argues for photography as a medium whose business is not constructing fantasies pleasing to the eye or imagination, but describing the world in the toughest and deepest way.

Описание: From MOOCs to autograders to computerized tutors, technologies designed for large-scale learning have never lived up to the hype. Despite its promise, Justin Reich shows that technology cannot transform our classrooms on its own. Successful education reform, he concludes, will focus on incremental institutional change, not the next killer app.
