Описание: The Kisokaido route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country’s then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaido journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838. Both Eisen and Hiroshige were master print practitioners. In The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaido, we find the artists’ distinct styles as much as their shared expertise. From the busy starting post of Nihonbashi to the castle town of Iwamurata, Eisen opts for a more muted palette but excels in figuration, particularly of glamorous women, and relishes snapshots of activity along the route, from shoeing a horse to winnowing rice. Hiroshige demonstrates his mastery of landscape with grandiose and evocative scenes, whether it’s the peaceful banks of the Ota River, the forbidding Wada Pass, or a moonlit ascent between Yawata and Mochizuki.

Описание:

Utagawa Hiroshige's two Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, 1852 and 1858, are both a copy act and in themselves innovative artistic endeavors.

Katsushika Hokusai published his famous series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji in 1830-1832 and it influenced Hiroshige tremendously to do his own series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series 1852, and 1858 which we deal with here.

Hiroshige shifted to the vertical portrait format with novel and interesting results. It is in the same vertical format for landscapes that Hiroshige used in his innovative series Hundred Famous Views of Edo created with Eisen in 1835 - 1842

It is possible to travel to see the same sites today and enjoy the views of Mt Fuji, which are still very important to the Japanese.

Описание:

The Kichizō Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, Gojūsan tsugi no uchi, 東海道六五十三次之内 is another very original of Hiroshige's huge Tokaido Road production.

The first thing you notice about this series is that the prints are often a bit dark. This is because most of them are dawn or dusk snapshots with a burning red horizon.

Another detail is that very few of the prints show samurai or daimyo. Most of the people here are commoners, rich merchants, not so rich merchants, pilgrims, coolies, all commoners.

A third important detail is that there is one print less than usual, to reach an equal number. This will surely create confusion. We have included the original Hoeidō prints with numbers as key.

Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese: 歌川 広重), also called Andō Hiroshige (in Japanese: 安藤 広重;) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. He was born 1797 and died 12 October 1858.

Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica. The term ukiyo-e (浮世絵) translates as "picture s] of the floating world".

Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, which is the subject of this book, and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.

Описание:

The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (東海道五十三次 Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi), in the Hōeidō edition (1833-1834), is a series of ukiyo-e woodcut prints created by Utagawa Hiroshige after his first travel along the Tōkaidō in 1832 Note this is the Hoeidō edition of prints.

The Tōkaidō road, linking the shōgun's capital, Edo, to the imperial one, Kyōto, was the main travel and transport artery of old Japan. It is also the most important of the "Five Roads" (Gokaidō)--the five major roads of Japan created or developed during the Edo period to further strengthen the control of the central shogunate administration over the whole country.

The Hōeidō edition of the Tōkaidō is Hiroshige's best known work, and the best sold ever ukiyo-e Japanese prints.

It is a wonderful trip to follow the old road, a real adventure
