Описание: As Told by Herself offers the first systematic study of womens autobiographical writing about childhood. More than 175 works—primarily from English-speaking countries and France, as well as other European countries—are presented here in historical sequence, allowing Lorna Martens to discern and reveal patterns as they emerge and change over time. What do the authors divulge, conceal, and emphasize? How do they understand the experience of growing up as girls? How do they understand themselves as parts of family or social groups, and what role do other individuals play in their recollections? To what extent do they concern themselves with issues of memory, truth, and fictionalization? Stopping just before second-wave feminism brought an explosion in womens childhood autobiographical writing, As Told by Herself explores the genres roots and development from the mid-nineteenth century, and recovers many works that have been neglected or forgotten. The result illustrates how previous generations of women—in a variety of places and circumstances—understood themselves and their upbringing, and how they thought to present themselves to contemporary and future readers.

Описание: This collection of essays offers a stimulating insight into the practice of reading and the relationship between reading and writing in women’s life writing texts such as memoirs, autobiographies, diaries, travel logs, and graphic memoirs. It covers a great variety of writers from literary classics such as Virginia Woolf to the authors of slave narratives. Some essays focus on how literary texts help frame a narrative of the self, acting as models and counter models; others insist on the role of literature in resisting imposed gendered and ethnic identities. The essays also show that female writers use reading to deepen their relationship to the rest of the world. While reading is often represented as central to life and aesthetic experience, the collection stresses that there is no single or universal approach to reading in women’s life writing. Taking into account debates about life writing, the collection opens new fields of investigation and fully participates in current scholarly conversations in the field.

Описание: WINNER - Prix du livre d`Ottawa 2016 WINNER - Prix Jean-Ethier-Blais 2015 WINNER - Prix Gabrielle-Roy 2014 FINALIST - Prix litteraire Trillium 2015 From the founding of New France to the present day, Quebec women have had to negotiate societal expectations placed on their gender. Tracing the evolution of life writing by Quebec women, Patricia Smart presents a feminist analysis of women`s struggles for autonomy and agency in a society that has continually emphasized the traditional roles of wife and mother. Writing Herself into Being examines published autobiographies and autobiographical fiction, as well as the annals of religious communities, letters, and a number of published and unpublished diaries by girls and women, to reveal a greater range of women`s experiences than proscribed, generalized roles. Through close readings of these texts Smart uncovers the authors` perspectives on events such as the 1837 Rebellion, the Montreal cholera epidemic of 1848, convent school education, the struggle for women`s rights in the early twentieth century, and the Quiet Revolution. Drawing attention to the individuality of each writer while situating her within the social and ideological context of her era, this book further explores the ways women and girls reacted to, and often rebelled against, the constraints imposed on them by both Church and state. Written in a clear and compelling narrative style that brings women`s voices to life, Writing Herself into Being - the author`s own translation of her award-winning French-language book De Marie de l`Incarnation a Nelly Arcan: Se dire, se faire par l`ecriture intime (Boreal, 2014) - offers a new and gendered view of various periods in Quebec history.

Описание:

Howard was courteous as he introduced himself at my front door in Dallas, Texas. He was clearly a man with refined manners. But I'd been around long enough to know the man I met in my doorway was never the man that'd be screwing me a few minutes later. After a word or two of small talk about his law firm, his tongue was down my throat and his arms pinned me against the wall. "What do you want, Victoria?"

He'd be shocked to know an honest answer. What I want is a stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills, an eight ball of coke and a couple bottles of Chardonnay. But I learned early that when clients ask this question they mean something specific. They're looking for me to figure out what they want. They need me to decide what'll get them off without them having to say it out loud. What I really wanted was a big life, a life the size of Texas--one of adventure and success far away from that little Ohio town my family seemed to accept without much of a fight. One that my parents said I'd never escape. But that wasn't something Howard would ever give me.

Through my moonlighting, I learned to figure out my clients' (often odd) desires on the fly while concealing my own dreams, secrets, and addictions. At turns comedic, tragic, gritty and erotic, Victoria of Dallas explores male desire through the stories of client encounters in vignettes after every chapter, as well as the desires of myself and how I finally learn in middle age who I really am. My memoir is inspirational and gives hope through the challenges I faced and overcame. The story takes you through my childhood in a small Ohio town to life as a Dallas call girl to life on the road and ultimately to Italy to discover what is most important to me and whom I really am.

Описание: Dead Woman Pickney chronicles Yvonne Shorter Brown's life growing up in Jamaica between 1943 and 1965 and teaching in Canada from 1969. Told with stridency and humour, the stories include both personal experience and history.Taking up the haunting memories of childhood, along with persistent racial marginalization of Black people, both globally and in Canada, the author sets out to construct a narrative that at once explains her own origins in the former slave society of Jamaica and traces the outsider status of Africa and its peoples. The author's quest to understand the absence of her mother and her mother's people from her life is at the heart of the narrative. The author struggles through life to discover the identity of her mother in the face of silence from her father's brutal family. In this updated edition she adds a coda, 'finding mother', constructed from archives, genealogy, letters, and journals.Initially published in 2010, this second edition includes expanded text and a foreword by Sonja Boon, author of What the Oceans Remember.
