Описание: Most cultural critics theorize modernity as a state of disenchanted distraction, one linked to both the rationalizing impulses of scientific and technological innovation and the kind of dispersed, fragmented attention that characterizes the experience of mass culture. Patrick Kindigs Fascination, however, tells a different story, showing that many fin-de-si?cle Americans were in fact concerned about (and intrigued by) the modern worlds ability to attract and fix attention in quasi-supernatural ways. Rather than being distracting, modern life in their view had an almost magical capacity to capture attention and overwhelm rational thought.Fascination argues that, in response to the dramatic scientific and cultural changes of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many American thinkers and writers came to conceive of the modern world as fundamentally fascinating. Describing such diverse phenomena as the electric generator, the movements of actresses, and ethnographic cinema as supernaturally alluring, they used the language of fascination to process and critique both popular ideologies of historical progress and the racializing logic upon which these ideologies were built. Drawing on an archive of primary texts from the fields of medicine, (para)psychology, philosophy, cultural criticism, and anthropology—as well as creative texts by Harriet Prescott Spofford, Charles Chesnutt, Theodore Dreiser, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Edward S. Curtis, Robert J. Flaherty, and Djuna Barnes—Kindig reconsiders what it meant for Americans to be (and to be called) modern at the turn of the twentieth century.

Описание:

The French writer and philosopher Maurice Blanchot (1907-2003) was a notoriously reclusive figure who wrote that his life was entirely devoted to literature. Why then have filmmakers and writers on film found so much inspiration in Blanchot's work? Blanchot and the Moving Image explores a constellation of connections between Blanchot, film and film theory and draws lines of intellectual influence to show how Blanchot's thinking of literature find its way by a kind of displacement into contemporary philosophical approaches to cinema. Three case studies examining individual films - by Jean-Luc Godard, B la Tarr and Gaspar No - draw out how Blanchot's complex notions of fascination and image can contribute to theories of spectatorship. The first book-length treatment of this theme, Blanchot and the Moving Image thus demonstrates the overlooked importance of Blanchot's work for understanding contemporary film and film theory.

Calum Watt gained his PhD at King's College London and is a Marie Curie Fellow at Universit Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3.

Описание: In this groundbreaking study based on five years of in-depth ethnographic and interdisciplinary research, Troubled in the Land of Enchantment explores the well-being of adolescents hospitalized for psychiatric care in New Mexico. Anthropologists Thomas J. Csordas and Janis H. Jenkins present a gripping picture of psychic distress, familial turmoil, and treatment under the regime of managed care that dominates the mental health care system. The authors make the case for the centrality of struggle in the lives of youth across an array of extraordinary conditions, characterized by personal anguish and structural violence. Critical to the analysis is the cultural phenomenology of existence disclosed through shifting narrative accounts by youth and their families as they grapple with psychiatric diagnosis, poverty, misogyny, and stigma in their trajectories through multiple forms of harm and sites of care. Csordas and Jenkins compellingly direct our attention to the conjunction of lived experience, institutional power, and the very possibility of having a life.

Enter The World Of Mythology

Enter a world where gods and goddesses mingle with the supernatural beings of the Tuatha de Danaan, where heroes fight epic battles and monsters are thwarted, and where legendary tales are told with an eye toward eternal glory--the treasure that is Celtic mythology is an undeniable pleasure to read. Explore another world of ancient times, never to be forgotten.

The motifs of Celtic legends are similar to that of many other mythologies: Magic is a handy way to explain the extraordinary; heroes are larger-than-life, with superhuman strength and wisdom to spare; gods are tricky and should be approached with caution; harrowing journeys are undertaken; romance is dramatic, often tragic; battles are fought and champions are forged. The Celts were the victims of internecine battles and foreign conquests, yet their legacy survives with a long-standing oral tradition that, eventually, was written down. We can see the Celtic evolution from warring tribes to triumphant kingdoms to Christian converts through the thread of a treasure trove of myths and tales.

This book can take you through that journey, beginning with an overview of the Celtic people and cultures and into an understanding of their pantheon of gods and goddesses, their amazing tales of adventure and sometimes sacrifice, and a glimpse into who they actually were via the stories they held dear. Some specific elements you will encounter:

  • Some of the main gods of the Celtic pantheon, with all their quirks and foibles
  • The beauty of the Tuatha de Danaan and their supernatural realm
  • The wily ways in which Celtic myths survive foreign invasions and new religions
  • One of the greatest heroes in all of Celtic mythology--Cuchulainn
  • The contribution of the Welsh to the set of Celtic tales
  • Early medieval romance and its tragically fated nature
  • Fellowship between warriors and knights--before Tolkien
  • The evil of the Fomorian hordes, invaders and monsters
  • The development of courtly tales and Arthurian legends--the inheritors of ancient Celtic mythology
  • A glimpse into all of the myriad ways that Celtic culture and its mythology still yet influence our world today

Celtic mythology is diverse and fascinating, offering us an insight into how ancient people believed and lived, into what they valued and vilified, and into how they loved and thrived. Finally, if you have enjoyed these treasured tales of Celtic mythology, don't forget to explore the other fantastic realms of mythological magic in this series of books: Treasures of Egyptian Mythology, Treasures of Norse Mythology, Treasures of Roman Mythology, and Treasures of Greek Mythology. You will find yourself in awe of the sweeping scope of history and culture represented by these mythological traditions--as well as obtain a better understanding of how we continually make and re-make these myths for our own times. That's the fabulous thing about myths: They never truly die.

Описание: Tolkien's enchanted worldview as literary form and as psychological struggleFocusing on the themes of enchantment and loss in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, this unique study incorporates elements of developmental psychology to explore both Tolkien's life and art, deepening our understanding of the interrelationship between his biography and writing. As John Rosegrant relates, Tolkien's early years saw a good deal of trauma: the loss of both parents, serious illness, poverty, and battlefield action during World War I, including the loss of close friends. Yet he presents an enchanted worldview in the stories of Middle-earth, and that tension between enchantment and disenchantment—as it results from significant trauma and loss—lies at the very heart of Tolkien's creative endeavors. In short, Tolkien's creative effort can be understood, especially from the perspective of his own psychological development, as a way to maintain a sense of enchantment in the face of great personal loss. Throughout our lives, at several stages we must surrender earlier forms of enchantment and develop more mature forms so that life does not become barren, drab, or dismal. As Rosegrant argues, Tolkien found ways to use his personal losses and struggles to address universal psychological issues in his art, giving his work great emotional sophistication and complexity. Tolkien, Enchantment, and Loss both deepens our understanding of Tolkien and helps us to recognize how Tolkien widens and enriches our understanding of life.

Описание: Mary Butts was an important figure in inter-war modernist circles and one who reviewed and associated with some of the major literary figures of the era, from T.S. Eliot to Gertrude Stein. Despite her importance and the varied nature of her writing, she has been a neglected figure in modernist scholarship. Providing a new analysis of the interwar literary period, Mary Butts and British Neo-Romanticism revisits her vividly experimental writings spanning memoir, poetry, polemic and fiction through the lens of mid-20th-century British neo-Romanticism. The book argues that behind Butts's eco-feminist writings lies an intricate political and philosophical commentary.

Описание: In the thirty-five years since the publication of The Bloody Chamber, Angela Carter’s reimagined fairy tales have inspired an impressive body of criticism. Yet none has addressed the ways her fairy tales grapple with and seek to overcome the near impossibility of heterosexual love and desire under patriarchy. In Erotic Infidelities: Love and Enchantment in Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber, author Kimberly J. Lau argues that the strangeness of Carter’s fairy-tale enchantments - the moments when love or erotic desire escape the deeply familiar, habitual structures and ideologies that contain them - show the momentary, fleeting possibilities for heterosexual love and desire.Lau begins by situating her reading of The Bloody Chamber - as individual stories and as a collection - within and against the critical literature, especially that which addresses Carter’s relationship to psychoanalytic theory and issues of language and desire. In chapter 2, she illustrates Carter’s construction of gender and language as labyrinthine structures - complex cultural edifices constructed and augmented over time. She moves on to consider Carter’s ""feline stories"" in chapter 3 - ""The Courtship of Mr. Lyon,"" ""The Tiger’s Bride,"" and ""Puss-in-Boots"" - in chapter 3 as an initial move away from the labyrinthine structures and toward an alternate erotics. In chapter 4, she reads ""The Erl-King"" and ""The Snow Child"" as another pair of mirrored tales, while chapter 5 elaborates on the pedophilic and necrophiliac fantasies of a pornographic culture introduced in the previous chapter with the Count’s desire for the Snow Child. In chapter 6, Lau situates Carter’s three concluding stories - the wolf trilogy - within the context of feminist psychoanalytic understandings of infidelity as that which destabilizes patriarchal hegemonies and constructs.Lau argues that Carter’s ""erotic infidelities"" work against our culturally determined expectations and longings and usher us into welcome new enchantments. Situated at the intersection of feminist, psychoanalytic, literary, and fairy-tale studies, readers interested in a variety of scholarly disciplines as well as scholars of Carter’s tales will enjoy Lau’s look at enduring questions of gender, sexuality, and desire.
