Описание: This book explores ancient efforts to explain the scientific, philosophical, and spiritual aspects of water. From the ancient point of view, we investigate many questions including: How does water help shape the world? What is the nature of the ocean? What causes watery weather, including superstorms and snow? How does water affect health, as a vector of disease or of healing? What is the nature of deep-sea-creatures (including sea monsters)? What spiritual forces can protect those who must travel on water? This first complete study of water in the ancient imagination makes a major contribution to classics, geography, hydrology and the history of science alike.Water is an essential resource that affects every aspect of human life, and its metamorphic properties gave license to the ancient imagination to perceive watery phenomena as the product of visible and invisible forces. As such, it was a source of great curiosity for the Greeks and Romans who sought to control the natural world by understanding it, and who, despite technological limitations, asked interesting questions about the origins and characteristics of water and its influences on land, weather, and living creatures, both real and imagined.

Описание: Today we can predict storms, reuse wastewater, and desalinate inland waters. And while technology makes it easier to quickly communicate, it can also strip away our humanity. Rather than succumb to the pull of anonymity created by that same technology, this book was written to help blur the lines between the experts and the public they affect. It means the experts never forgetting there are real people trusting them that the water is indeed “safe” to swim in or the wastewater can be treated to a level safe enough to drink. It means the public recognizing that operators must fix a main break no matter when it occurs. It means bringing the public into the mix upstream, at the discovery point of the problem rather than waiting to hand them only the preferred solution. No longer is lifting the experts’ curtain only when they’re ready to theatrically reveal solutions acceptable. Gone are the days when the public trusts all of the negotiations, problem solving, and hidden props appearing after the production of the water experts is complete. For the one thing you can predict about us humans is that hidden beneath the façade of logic, is our deep-seated emotional side. For only with a solid understanding of the consumer’s hidden world of perceptions and irrationality, can we truly communicate the value of water. This book reveals the power of engaging the public when communicating the value of water when it involves wastewater, stormwater and watersheds. Through stories of success and why communications can fail, this book is written for wastewater utilities, watershed stewards and stormwater managers, engineers, operators, stakeholders, elected officials, and anyone that truly wants to make a difference in the public’s perception when it comes to the value of water.

Описание: This volume considers how Greco-Roman authorities manipulated water on the practical, technological, and political levels. Water was controlled and harnessed with legal oversight and civic infrastructure (e.g., aqueducts). Waterways were ‘improved’ and made accessible by harbors, canals, and lighthouses. The Mediterranean Sea and Outer Ocean (and numerous rivers) were mastered by navigation for warfare, exploration, settlement, maritime trade, and the exploitation of marine resources (such as fishing). These waterways were also a robust source of propaganda on coins, public monuments, and poetic encomia as governments vied to establish, maintain, or spread their identities and predominance. This first complete study of the ancient scientific and public engagement with water makes a major contribution to classics, geography, hydrology and the history of science alike. In the ancient Mediterranean Basin, water was a powerful tool of human endeavor, employed for industry, trade, hunting and fishing, and as an element in luxurious aesthetic installations (public and private fountains). The relationship was complex and pervasive, touching on every aspect of human life, from mundane acts of collecting water for the household, to private and public issues of comfort and health (latrines, sewers, baths), to the identity of the state writ large.

Описание:

This manual takes a "past, present, and future" look at the stormwater quality modeling industry. Stormwater quality models predict runoff volumes and loads from land surfaces and route them through receiving waterbodies. Some stormwater manuals that are referenced today are over 20 years old. Although the basic theory presented in these manuals remains applicable to today's stormwater industry, many of the water quality models described in older manuals are no longer used or have undergone significant redevelopment.

This special publication presents state-of-the-art stormwater modeling in the United States. Advances in technology and the state of practice, along with more stringent permitting requirements, call for the improved use of geospatial and remotely sense acquired data and better integration of quality and quantity models to seamlessly exchange data and outputs between different decision support tools.

This manual is a practical tool that presents a broad compilation of existing models, their capabilities, and a roadmap for users to assist in the selection of such models for diverse applications. Further background is given in this publication towards the history, evolution, and future of stormwater modeling practices. The audience for this manual are industry users with an underlying knowledge and understanding of the theory behind water quantity and quality modeling.

Описание: This book discusses how climate change and heat islands are a main contributor to water related problems in urban areas in Ko?ice, Slovakia. Green roofs are used as a tool to assist in solving these water related issues. The need to provide housing in urban areas is expected to rise to 66% in 2050, according to the United Nations. Many urban areas have seen natural permeable green areas replaced with concrete constructions and hard, non-permeable surfaces. The densification of existing built-up areas is responsible for the decreasing vegetation, which results in the lack of evapotranspiration cooling the air, thereby creating urban heat islands. Several studies, discussed in this book, have shown that natural and permeable surfaces, as in the case of green roofs, can play a crucial role in mitigating this negative climate phenomenon and providing higher efficiency for buildings, leading to savings such as water, one of the focal points of this research.
