Описание: What does it take to consider a planet potentially habitable? If a planet is suitable for life, could life be present? Is life on other planets inevitable? Searching for Habitable Worlds answers these questions and provides both the general public and astronomy enthusiasts with a richly illustrated discussion of the most current knowledge regarding the search for extrasolar planets. Nearly everyone wants to know if we are alone in the universe. This book might not have the answers, but shows where we should look. This book is a fun and accessible book for everyone from middle schoolers to amateur astronomers of all ages. The use of non-technical language and abundant illustrations make this a quick read to inform everyone about the latest movement in the search for other planets that we might be able to inhabit. After a brief discussion on why humans are hard-wired to be curious, and to explore the unknown, the book describes what extrasolar planets are, how to detect them, and how to pin down potential targets. In addition, a data-driven list of the best candidates for habitability is profiled and the next generation of exoplanet-hunting scientific instruments and probes are identified.

Assembling Life: How Can Life Begin on Earth and Other Habitable Planets?

Описание: In Assembling Life, David Deamer addresses questions that are the cutting edge of research on the origin of life. For instance, how did non-living organic compounds assemble into the first forms of primitive cellular life? What was the source of those compounds and the energy that produced the first nucleic acids? Did life begin in the ocean or in fresh water on terrestrial land masses? Could life have begun on Mars? The book provides an overview of conditions on the early Earth four billion years ago and explains why fresh water hot springs are a plausible alternative to salty seawater as a site where life can begin. Deamer describes his studies of organic compounds that were likely to be available in the prebiotic environment and the volcanic conditions that can drive chemical evolution toward the origin of life. The book is not exclusively Earth-centric, but instead considers whether life could begin elsewhere in our solar system. Deamer does not propose how life did begin, because we can never know that with certainty. Instead, his goal is to understand how life can begin on any habitable planet, with Earth so far being the only known example.

Описание: "After Claire" is an ambitious, suspense-filled novel that taps into the gritty heart of psychotherapy. By adding a psychological twist to the standard crime genre, author John Wallis takes readers on a unique, page-turning journey. The novel begins with a routine trip to a grocery story that turns out to be not routine at all. Paul Masons wife, Claire, unexpectedly tells him she wants a divorce. Alarmed and confused, Paul runs a red light - resulting in an accident that kills Claire. As Paul tries to resume his life as a psychotherapist and father to nine-year--old Allie, he finds that nothing will ever be the same - especially after Allie finds out just how her mother died. Paul eventually begins to work with a new psychotherapy patient, Angela. Especially because his personal life is so compromised, Paul is powerfully motivated to help Angela, who wants to break off her relationship with a much older, drug cartel-connected lover, Carlos. Carlos shows up at Pauls office and reels off where his daughter, Allie goes to school, who her teachers are, and asks how shes doing since her mom died. Paul understands this to be a threat to harm Allie if he doesnt terminate his work with Angela. Paul continues to work with Angela, but then Carlos makes Paul an offer he cant refuse - take him on as a patient, or Carlos will have Pauls legs broken. After working a brief time with Carlos, whom he both loathes and fears, Paul quits his psychotherapy practice altogether to become a life-coach on a cruise line. Six years later, Angela shows up on one of Pauls cruises wanting to resume their work. Shortly after, Allie goes missing. A crime-filled thriller filled with elements of psychology; this is a must-read for fans of fiction!

Описание: This book offers a new perspective on Chinese urban history by exploring cities as habitable spaces. China, the world’s most populous nation, is now its newest urban society, and the pace of this unprecedented historical transformation has increased in recent decades. The contributors to this book conceptualise cities as first providing the necessities of life, and then becoming places in which the quality of life can be improved. They focus on how cities have been made secure during times of instability, how their inhabitants have consumed everything from the simplest of foods to the most expensive luxuries, and how they have been planned as ideal spaces. Drawing examples from across the country, this book offers comparisons between different cities, highlights continuities across time and space—and in doing so may provide solutions to some of the problems that continue to affect Chinese cities today.

Описание: Excerpt from The Drainage of Habitable Buildings

IN the early part of the year 1881, I was employed to write for the Plumber and Decorator, and Journal of Gas and Sanitary Engineering, a series of articles which now comprise this work; and in writing upon such a subject as Habitable Buildings, I elected to touch, but briefly, upon what has been done in such an insanitary manner in the past, and to point out mainly what should be done to render a dwelling thoroughly sanitary as regards its drainage arrangements. The title therefore of The Drain age of Habitable Buildings suggested itself to me as an appropriate one.

It is a great question if there is any necessity at all for a preface to such a book, but I beg to take the liberty with my readers of opening this edition with a few words of a prefatory nature.

For many years past I have made a special and particular study of the Science of House Drainage, and that fact being known was the reason of my being employed to write this work for the above Journal, in the pages of which it appeared.
