Описание:

In What Money Can't Buy, renowned political philosopher Michael J. Sandel rethinks the role that markets and money should play in our society.

Should we pay children to read books or to get good grades? Should we put a price on human life to decide how much pollution to allow? Is it ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars, outsourcing inmates to for-profit prisons, auctioning admission to elite universities, or selling citizenship to immigrants willing to pay?

In his New York Times bestseller What Money Can't Buy, Michael J. Sandel takes up one of the biggest ethical questions of our time: Isn't there something wrong with a world in which everything is for sale? If so, how can we prevent market values from reaching into spheres of life where they don't belong? What are the moral limits of markets?

Over recent decades, market values have crowded out nonmarket norms in almost every aspect of life. Without quite realizing it, Sandel argues, we have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society.

In Justice, an international bestseller, Sandel showed himself to be a master at illuminating, with clarity and verve, the hard moral questions we confront in our everyday lives. Now, in What Money Can't Buy, he provokes a debate that's been missing in our market-driven age: What is the proper role of markets in a democratic society, and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets do not honor and money cannot buy?

Описание: Adam Sandel revives one of the oldest philosophical questions: What constitutes a good life? Drawing on thinkers ancient and modern, as well as his own experience as a record-setting athlete, he argues that fulfillment lies not in achieving goals but in forging a life journey that enables us to see our struggles and triumphs as an integrated whole.

Описание: The new bestseller from the acclaimed author of Justice and one of the world's most popular philosophers'Will help us to heal our divided societies' Sunday Times These are dangerous times for democracy. We live in an age of winners and losers, where the odds are stacked in favour of the already fortunate. Stalled social mobility and entrenched inequality give the lie to the promise that "you can make it if you try".

And the consequence is a brew of anger and frustration that has fuelled populist protest, with the triumph of Brexit and election of Donald Trump. Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the polarized politics of our time, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalisation and rising inequality.

Sandel highlights the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgement it imposes on those left behind. He offers an alternative way of thinking about success - more attentive to the role of luck in human affairs, more conducive to an ethic of humility, and more hospitable to a politics of the common good.

Описание: Set in the 1960s in an Oxford college, when being gay was still an offence punishable by imprisonment, 'Sandel' tells the story of a love affair between an undergraduate (David Rogers), and a cathedral choir boy (Antony Sandel). Tony - beautiful, provocative, mischievous, sensitive and sometimes overwhelmed by the intensity of his own feelings - bewitches Rogers. Both are talented musicians, and Sandel's astonishing voice, which Rogers explores as his accompanist at the transient moment of glory which precedes it breaking, is soon central to the relationship. Sensual, profound, often funny and never sentimental, Stewart provides a definitive analysis of same-sex love in the context of a relationship that puts sex in its place and reveals love as the one agent of the human condition that can set us free. The setting of the novel in an Oxford college (actually Christ Church, which the author attended) and the well-observed description of life in an English choir-school - short trousers, boats on the river, afternoon tea and cricket before Evensong - along with the stylistic quality of the writing, places 'Sandel' in a tradition made famous by Evelyn Waugh ('Decline and Fall' and 'Brideshead Revisited'). There are echoes too of 'Maurice', the novel by E M Forster published after his death in 1970. On both sides of the Atlantic, 'Sandel' became formative reading for a generation of boys growing up in the 1970s who knew their feelings fell outside the heterosexual male stereotype, and it remains a gay cult novel today, with prices on Amazon reaching thousands of dollars a copy. But its fundamental message holds good for all people in all eras whatever their sexual persuasion, and is delivered with great subtlety and skill by a master craftsman. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Angus Stewart was born in 1936, the son of John Innes Mackintosh Stewart, the novelist and Oxford academic who wrote bestselling crime fiction as Michael Innes. He was educated at Bryanston School in Dorset, and later at Christ Church Oxford. Stewart's first published work was 'The Stile' (1965), which won the Richard Hillary Memorial Prize. His first novel, 'Sandel', which is in many respects autobiographical, came in 1968 and is now a cult classic, recently commanding very high prices on the internet. Before and after its publication, Stewart lived for long periods in Morocco. In 2016 his personal memoir, 'Tangier' (1977), was reissued in a new edition, including photographs by the author. His experiences there explain a great deal about the author of 'Sandel', and his exposure to Tangier's legendary artistic community, which included Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Francis Bacon, Alan Sillitoe, Ruth Fainlight, Rupert Croft-Cooke, Alec Waugh, William Burroughs, Gavin Maxwell, Francis Bacon, Joe Orton and others, prepared the way for his second novel, 'Snow in Harvest' (1969). 'Sense and Inconsequence: Satirical Verses' followed in 1972, with a Foreword by W H Auden. A third novel, 'The Wind Cries All Ways', which includes a startling description of the author's incarceration in a Tangier mental asylum, has yet to be published. After his mother's death in 1979 Stewart returned to live in England, and died in Oxfordshire twenty years later.

Описание:

Teek gives Walter Prudy the surprise of his life. He speaks to him--surprising because Walter is a human and Teek is a ground squirrel.

As the now aging Walter revisits the canyon of his boyhood days, he slips off the trail, rolls down a steep slope and into Teek's world. Regaining consciousness, Walter notices a ground squirrel perched on a rock, peering down at him. Teek's penetrating stare re-awakens in Walter a dormant power that he had first received from another ground squirrel when he was young--an enhanced perception of the natural world and the ability to communicate with creatures.

Teek lives in the colony of RIMROCK, hidden in the cliffs of the canyon. The Illumination Stone, the most mysterious of all things, is situated in the center of the Great Hall of the colony village. It is central to their culture. At certain times of the year, the entire village gathers as the elder receives age-old stories from the Illumination Stone and recites them to the colony. But now the stone has been stolen, and RIMROCK has been exposed to an encroaching world of humans and predators. Colony culture is eroding, dividing families. Fear and distrust result. Teek organizes a search for the stone. As his adventure unfolds, he and his band of travelers uncover the canyon's hidden secrets and learn to depend upon a community of creatures.

Reunited with his granddaughter, Sofia, Walter Prudy introduces her to the squirrels of RIMROCK. She is awakened to the same abilities her grandfather possesses. As Walter's and Sofia's destinies merge with Teek's, Sofia discovers and develops her own connection and love for the canyon and its creatures.

Peter Sandel grew up inspired by natural places. From his experience fighting forest fires to more tranquil times hiking and fishing, his study of natural history included spending many a day observing the behavior of golden-mantled ground squirrels.

RIMROCK The Illumination Stone is a novel written for humans of all ages but particularly for middle-grade readers.

Both traditions are founded on the development of a partnership with a horse, which enables lightness of foot and thought. This book provides useful insights for riders of all levels - whether you want to hack out in harmony or improve your half pass - with clear, practical, step-by-step instructions and advice.

Topics covered include:

  • consideration of the similarities of the traditions and why this is useful for modern riders to understand

  • foundational handling up to high school - common themes
  • the human side of the partnership - how to make sense to our horse and be someone he wants to learn from and how to help our horse develop a greater ease of movement without the use of gadgets or force.
  • detailed explanations of straightness, balance and dynamic posture along with step-by-step guidance on teaching 'the language of the aids'
  • tapping into your horse's amazing capacity to learn
