Описание: In 1945, the Indian British XIV Army inflicted on the Imperial Japanese Army in Burma the worst defeat in its history. That campaign, the most brilliant and original operational maneuver conducted by any British general in the twentieth century, largely forgotten until now, is a full and fresh account utilizing a full range of materials, from personal accounts to archival holdings-including the bits the official historians left out, such as the attempt by a jealous British Guards officer to have Slim sacked at the conclusion of the campaign. After the retreat from Burma in 1942, Lieutenant General Sir William Slim, commander of the British XIV Army, played a crucial role in the remarkable military renaissance that transformed the Indian Army and then, with that reborn army, won two defensive battles in 1944, and in the 1945 campaign shredded his Japanese opponents. Behind this dramatic story was another: the war marked the effective end of the Raj. This great transformation was, of course, brought about by many factors but not the least of them was the Indianization of the Indian Armys officer corps under the pressure of war. As Slims great victory signposted the change from the army Kipling knew to a modern army with a growing number of Indian officers, the praetorian guard of the Raj evaporated. Every Indian officer worth his salt is a nationalist, the Indian Armys commander-in-chief, Claude Auchinleck, said as the XIV Army took Rangoon. The Burma campaign may not have contributed in a major fashion to the final defeat of Japan, but it was of first-rate importance in the transformation of South Asia, as well as underlining the continuing importance of inspired leadership in complex human endeavors.

Описание:

'This is an important book that uncovers some remarkable secrets... Connor is an outstanding historian of wartime Asia and he tells his story well.' Richard J. Aldrich, author of GCHQ

Six weeks after Japan's surrender in August 1945, British and Japanese troops were fighting side-by-side against nationalist revolutionaries in 'peacekeeping' operations in Indonesia and Vietnam. In Java, Dutch civilians cheered as their former jailors, members of the infamous kenpeitai rescued them from what had seemed certain death at the hands of armed mobs. In November 1945 a Japanese Army officer was recommended for a British Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for services rendered to South-East Asia Command after his troops helped restore order and save thousands of civilian lives.

'The Japanese may be so deployed and...drastic action including shooting should be taken against any who refuse'. Admiral Mountbatten (to War Office), Kandy, 24 August 1945.

'The men concerned are surely Japanese prisoners-of-war and if the War Office, in order to evade compliance with the Geneva Convention, have decided to call them something else, this should not...avoid responsibility for decent treatment.' Foreign Office, London, 18 March 1946.

In August 1945 Britain accepted responsibility for the care and repatriation of over 750,000 Japanese military personnel in Southeast Asia. Short of manpower and resources in Burma and Malaya, and with its French and Dutch Allies' colonial territories of Indo-China (FIC) and the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) embroiled in revolution, Britain found it expedient to press the Japanese-who were denied Prisoner of War (PoW) status-into military operations in support of European colonial interests and then ignore repatriation commitments by deliberately retaining over 100,000 as mass, unpaid labour.

'[A] stain which would blemish the honor of the United Kingdom...' General Douglas MacArthur, Tokyo, March 1947.

Mountbatten's Samurai reveals a Britain struggling to match Great Power status and obligation without a Great Power budget or capability in Southeast Asia in the face of strong criticism from the US State Department in Washington, General Douglas MacArthur's SCAP GHQ Occupation headquarters in Tokyo, the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), the Japanese Government and even the Vatican.

'A perceptive and shrewd analysis of the prolonged and secret diplomatic stand-off between London and Washington over Britain's post-war use of tens of thousands of surrendered Japanese in combat operations in support of European colonial interests in contravention of the Geneva Convention, and later as deliberately retained, unpaid labour in breach of the Potsdam Agreement'. Описание: Although an army’s success is often measured in battle outcomes, its victories depend on strengths that may be less obvious on the field. In Sickness, Suffering, and the Sword, military historian Andrew Bamford assesses the effectiveness of the British Army in sustained campaigning during the Napoleonic Wars. In the process, he offers a fresh and controversial look at Britain’s military system, showing that success or failure on campaign rested on the day-to-day experiences of regimental units rather than the army as a whole.Bamford draws his title from the words of Captain Moyle Sherer, who during the winter of 1816-1817 wrote an account of his service during the Peninsular War: “My regiment has never been very roughly handled in the field. . . But, alas! What between sickness, suffering, and the sword, few, very few of those men are now in existence.” Bamford argues that those daily scourges of such often-ignored factors as noncombat deaths and equine strength and losses determined outcomes on the battlefield. In the nineteenth century, the British Army was a collection of regiments rather than a single unified body, and the regimental system bore the responsibility of supplying manpower on that field. Between 1808 and 1815, when Britain was fighting a global conflict far greater than its military capabilities, the system nearly collapsed. Only a few advantages narrowly outweighed the army’s increasing inability to meet manpower requirements. This book examines those critical dynamics in Britain’s major early-nineteenth-century campaigns: the Peninsular War (1808-1814), the Walcheren Expedition (1809), the American War (1812-1815), and the growing commitments in northern Europe from 1813 on.Drawn from primary documents, Bamford’s statistical analysis compares the vast disparities between regiments and different theatres of war and complements recent studies of health and sickness in the British Army.

Описание:

The British prohibition of sati (the funeral practice of widow immolation) in 1829 has been considered an archetypal example of colonial social reform. It was not the end of the story, however, as between 1830 and 1860, British East India Company officials engaged in a debate with the Indian rulers of the Rajput and Maratha princely states of North West India about the prohibition and suppression of sati in their territories. This book examines the debates that brought about legislation in these areas, arguing that they were instrumental in setting the terms of post-colonial debates about sati, and more generally, in defining the parameters of British involvement in Indian social and religious issues.

This book provides a reinterpretation of the major themes of sovereignty, authority and social reform in colonial South Asian history by examining the shifting pragmatic, political, moral and ideological forces which underpinned British policies on and attitudes to sati. The author illuminates the complex ways in which East India Company officials negotiated the limits of their own authority in India, their conceptions of nature and the extent of Indian princely sovereignty, and argues that and the so-called 'civilising mission' was often dependent on local circumstances and political expediencies rather than overarching imperial principles; the book also evaluates Indian responses to the supposed modernising Enlightenment discourse.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of South Asian history as well as British colonial studies.

Описание: In 1918, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) played a critical role in defeating the German army and thus winning the First World War. This 'Hundred Days' campaign (August to November 1918) was the greatest series of land victories in British military history. 1918 also saw the creation of the Royal Air Force, the world's first independent air service, from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Until recently, British histories of the First World War have tended to concentrate on the earlier battles of 1916 and 1917 and often underplayed this vitally important period. Changing War fills this significant gap in our knowledge by providing in-depth examinations of key aspects of the operations of the British Army, the Royal Air Force and its antecedents in the climactic year of the First World War. Written by a group of established historians and emerging scholars it sheds light not only on 1918, but on the revolutionary changes in warfare that took place at that time.

Описание: It's early April 1945 and the British Second Army is over the Rhine and advancing across the North German Plain. Its objective is Schleswig-Holstein, with the rivers Weser, Aller and Leine the only remaining obstacles of significance before the Elbe. German forces appear to be in total disarray and British confidence is high, but tempered by the fear of becoming a casualty with the end of the war within touching distance. Unknown to the British, a new division formed from naval personnel and supported by a Waffen-SS battalion of Hitler Youth and some of the last available Tiger and Panther tanks, has been deployed westwards to the Weser and charged with its defense. Despite their inexperience, these are well-motivated troops and determined to acquit themselves to the best of their ability in what will, in all likelihood, be their first and last battle. The destruction of a Churchill tank on the outskirts of Minden on 6 April marks the opening of 11 days of fierce action, and for all the combatants the war is very far from over.

Meticulously researched and published in the 75th anniversary year of the events it describes, Theirs the Strife tells the story of a series of bitter actions fought by VIII and XII Corps to cross the three rivers. Historians have paid little attention to these final weeks, with the few British narratives hurrying from the Rhine to the surrender on L neburg Heath and at best making only passing reference to the actions fought en route. The lack of coverage of the fighting has given rise to a perception that in effect there was none and that the advances through Germany and the Netherlands were trouble-free 'swans'. Nothing could be further from the truth and 21st Army Group suffered heavy casualties during its final battles against the forces of a cornered regime. There is also a commonly-held perception that by 1945 Second Army was at its most potent, when in reality much of it was exhausted and extremely casualty conscious, with the infantry in particular nearly worn out both quantitatively and qualitatively. Furthermore, and largely the product of contemporary photographs and newsreels, there is a misconception that in April 1945 the German Army did little more than surrender. This also is mistaken and many of the German units in the account will fight with courage and resilience. There are therefore more similarities between the opposing combatants than might be assumed and they are both faced with the same challenge: summoning up the courage to prosecute a war to its bloody conclusion.

Although parts of the book were previously published as No Triumphant Procession, which had as its central theme the actions fought by XII Corps against the naval division, Theirs the Strife reflects many years of additional research by the author and provides a significantly broader history by embracing VIII Corps' actions against the division. In particular it describes the detail of 6th Airborne and 11th Armoured Division's hard-fought battles for bridgeheads over the Weser, 11th Armoured Division's demanding advance to the Aller, the subsequent battle for the Essel bridgehead and the heavily contested advance to Winsen. The book includes air actions by the RAF and Luftwaffe, the impact of Ultra decrypts and there are two contextual chapters recording the organization, equipment and state of the participating British and German forces. The Epilogue explores the British strengths and weaknesses and provides an in-depth analysis of why some German units offered stubborn resistance so close to the war's end.

This book is no dry piece of military history. Much of the narrative is set at battalion level and below, is studded with firsthand accounts and photographs, and supported by over 100 maps and figures, giving the reader unparalleled understanding of the actions. The book fills a significant gap in our knowledge of this period and, in the 75

Описание: John Kiszely draws on his own experience in the military to assess the ignominious failure of the British campaign in Norway in 1940. Описание: This study explores the local dynamics of ethnic cleansing in the German-Czech borderlands after World War II. It demonstrates that resettlers` search for social mobility, the government`s contradictory policies and the need for German workers profoundly influenced the nature of ethnic cleansing in the context of the early Cold War.
