Long-term, stable, non-marital relationships were common, and the community regularly accepted concubinaries, concubinal relationships, and the offspring concubinage produced.

The Right Spouse is an engaging investigation into Tamil (South Indian) preferential close kin marriages, so-called Dravidian Kinship. This book offers a description and an interpretation of preferential marriages with close kin in South India, as they used to be arranged and experienced in the recent past and as they are increasingly discontinued in the present.
Clark-Dec?s presents readers with a focused anthropology of this waning marriage system: its past, present, and dwindling future. The book takes on the main pillars of Tamil social organization, considers the ways in which Tamil intermarriage establishes kinship and social rank, and argues that past scholars have improperly defined "Dravidian" kinship. Within her critique of past scholarship, Clark-Dec?s recasts a powerful and vivid image of preferential marriage in Tamil Nadu and how those preferences and marital rules play out in lived reality. What Clark-Dec?s discovers in her fieldwork are endogamous patterns and familial connections that sometimes result in flawed relationships, contradictory statuses, and confused roles.
The book includes a fascinating narration of the complex terrain that Tamil youth currently navigate as they experience the complexities and changing nature of marriage practices and seek to reconcile their established kinship networks to more individually driven marriages and careers.

Between 1939 and 1945, some 80,000 Finnish children were sent to Sweden, Denmark, and elsewhere, ostensibly to protect them from danger while their nation’s soldiers fought superior Soviet and German forces. This was the largest of all of World War II children’s transports, and although acknowledged today as “a great social-historical mistake,” it has received surprisingly little attention. This is the first English-language account of Finland’s war children and their experiences, told through the survivors’ own words. Supported by an extensive introduction, a bibliography of secondary sources, and over two dozen photographs, this book testifies to the often-lifelong traumas endured by youthful survivors of war.

Toward the end of the fifteenth century, the Habsburg family began to rely on dynastic marriage to unite an array of territories, eventually creating an empire as had not been seen in Europe since the Romans. Other European rulers followed the Habsburgs' lead in forging ties through dynastic marriages. Because of these marriages, many more aristocrats (especially women) left their homelands to reside elsewhere. Until now, historians have viewed these unions from a primarily political viewpoint and have paid scant attention to the personal dimensions of these relocations. Separated from their family and thrust into a strange new land in which language, attire, religion, food, and cultural practices were often different, these young aristocrats were forced to conform to new customs or adapt their own customs to a new cultural setting. Early Modern Dynastic Marriages and Cultural Transfer examines these marriages as important agents of cultural transfer, emphasizing how marriages could lead to the creation of a cosmopolitan culture, common to the elites of Europe. These essays focus on the personal and domestic dimensions of early modern European court life, examining such areas as women's devotional practices, fashion, patronage, and culinary traditions.
A fully indexed compilation of Birth, Marriage, and Death notices from The Armagh Guardian newspaper, 1844-1852 (second edition). :: :: :: John Thompson (1815-1880), proprietor and editor of The Armagh Guardian, got his start in the newspaper business under the tutelage of William Trimble (1802-1886), publisher of the Impartial Reporter and Farmers' Journal at Enniskillen, in the county Fermanagh. Embarking on his own newsprint venture, Thompson printed the inaugural edition of The Armagh Guardian on December 3, 1844. He continued to publish from 63, English-street, Armagh, until his death on February 5, 1880, when his son, William Copeland Bracken Thompson (1849-1892) succeeded him. This book presents transcriptions of birth, marriage, and death notices from historic editions of The Armagh Guardian, published between December 3, 1844 and December 25, 1852. This period corresponds with that dark epoch in Irish history known as the Great Famine, or in the Gaeilge language, an Gorta M r--from the earliest reports of disease found in the potato crops in late 1844, to the d nouement of this national tragedy in the early 1850s--in an Ireland permanently altered by the consequences of mass hunger, disease, death, and emigration. Between 1844-1852, Mr. Thompson published 6,453 birth, marriage, and death notices. These notices contain 14,534 surname references--all indexed in this volume. This SECOND EDITION includes 25,982 indexed references--seventy pages in all--to place names: 22,353 within Ireland, and 3,629 places around the world, ranging from England (1,963), Scotland (402), the USA (391), and the Canadian provinces (169), to the East Indies (115), France (71), Australia (47), and other farflung locations around the globe. Whether employed in the pursuit of family or local history research, or perused at leisure in an armchair, may this book also serve as a tribute to the memory of the people who were born in the county of Armagh, in neighbouring counties, or in Ireland generally, and--perhaps, especially--to the multitudes who suffered during the famine years, and whose names were not immortalized in the pages of The Armagh Guardian or other Irish provincial journals. :: :: :: Alison Kilpatrick is an amateur genealogist with a keen interest in historic newspapers. Alison is well known in the online community, as much for her family history research interests in Ireland and England, as for the volume and reliability of her transcriptions from 18th and 19th century Irish newspapers, covering several counties in the province of Ulster. Alison developed an interest in The Armagh Guardian whilst researching her Flavell and Gilmore ancestors from the parish of Drumcree, and the Huggins, Kennedy, Marshall, O'Brien, Stevenson, and Thompson families of Caledon, Glenarb, Glenkeen, Carland, Dungannon, Pomeroy, Stewartstown, and Strabane, in the county Tyrone.
