In late antiquity, Zoroastrian exegetes set out to translate their ancient canonical texts into Middle Persian, the vernacular of their time. Although undated, these translations, commonly known as the Zand, are often associated with the Sasanian era (224-651 ce). Despite the many challenges the Zand offers to us today, it is indispensable for investigations of late antique exegesis of the Avesta, a collection of religious and ritual texts commonly regarded as the Zoroastrians' scripture.
Arash Zeini also offers a fresh edition of the Middle Persian version of the Avestan Yasna Haptaŋhāiti, a ritual text composed in the Old Iranian language of Avestan, commonly dated to the middle of the second millennium bce. At the close of the nineteenth century, modern ideas of democracy and equality were slowly beginning to take hold in Iran. Exposed to European ideas about law, equality, and education, upper- and middle-class men and women increasingly questioned traditional ideas about the role of women and their place in society. In apparent response to this emerging independence of women, an anonymous author penned The Education of Women, a small booklet published in 1889. This guide, aimed at husbands as much as at wives, instructed women on how to behave toward their husbands, counseling them on proper dress, intimacy, and subservience.
One woman, Bibi Khanom Astarabadi, took up the author's challenge and wrote a refutation of the guide's arguments. An outspoken mother of seven, Astarabadi established the first school for girls in Tehran and often advocated for the rights of women. In The Vices of Men, she details the flaws of men, offering a scathing diatribe on the nature of men's behavior toward women.
Astarabadi mixes the traditional florid style of the time with street Persian, slang words, and bawdy language. The study of race and ethnicity should be considered as an overlooked subject in the field of Iranian photography. One of the important themes in this regard which requires special attention is photography of enslaved people in Iran during the Qajar period. Students of the field have not shown any particular interest in photography of the enslaved in general, nor of African slaves in particular. Therefore, photography of Africans enslaved during the last decades of the Qajar period (1840s-1920s) should be considered as a new topic in the field of visual studies of modern Iran.
Qajar photographs in which the presence of African slaves (children, women and men) can be observed were mostly taken by Nasser al-Din Shah inside his harem, or in his own studio. The remainder of such photographs were taken by court photographers inside the court, during the king's travels, or on other occasions and locations but outside the court.
This book is the first of its kind to use photographs of the Qajar period to prove the level of ability of the medium to document and simultaneously pathologise the history, culture, story, and maybe struggle of African slave communities in Qajar Iran.
