Описание: Printing presses were instrumental in creating and upholding a sense of community during the eighteenth century. While the importance of print in the development of colonial America and the nascent United States is well-established, Imprinting Britain extends the historical discussion northward to explore the dynamic and interrelated world of newspapers, coffee houses, and theatre in the British imperial capitals of Halifax and Quebec City. Michael Eamon describes how an English-language colonial community coalesced around the printed word, establishing public spaces for colonists to propose, debate, and define their visions of an ideal society. Whereas American newspapers functioned as incubators of republican and revolutionary thought, their British North American counterparts featured a moderate discourse that rejected republicanism, favoured civic engagement, advocated liberty with propriety, extolled democracy under monarchy, promoted reason over superstition, and encouraged social criticism without revolution. The press also safeguarded against the uncertainties of colonial life by providing a steady stream of transatlantic news, literature, and fashion that helped construct a sense of Britishness in an environment rife with mixed loyalties. Imprinting Britain is the story of communities that turned to the press for a canon of British norms, literary touchstones, and Enlightenment-inspired ideas, which offered a blueprint for colonial growth and a sense of stability in an ever-changing, transatlantic milieu.

Описание: President Andrew Jackson’s conflict with the Second Bank of the United States was one of the most consequential political struggles in the early nineteenth century. A fight over the bank’s reauthorization, the Bank War, provoked fundamental disagreements over the role of money in politics, competing constitutional interpretations, equal opportunity in the face of a state-sanctioned monopoly, and the importance of financial regulation—all of which cemented emerging differences between Jacksonian Democrats and Whigs. As Stephen W. Campbell argues here, both sides in the Bank War engaged interregional communications networks funded by public and private money. The first reappraisal of this political turning point in US history in almost fifty years, The Bank War and the Partisan Press advances a new interpretation by focusing on the funding and dissemination of the party press.
Drawing on insights from the fields of political history, the history of journalism, and financial history, The Bank War and the Partisan Press brings to light a revolving cast of newspaper editors, financiers, and postal workers who appropriated the financial resources of preexisting political institutions—and even created new ones—to enrich themselves and further their careers. The bank propagated favorable media and tracked public opinion through its system of branch offices while the Jacksonians did the same by harnessing the patronage networks of the Post Office. Campbell’s work contextualizes the Bank War within larger political and economic developments at the national and international levels. Its focus on the newspaper business documents the transition from a seemingly simple question of renewing the bank’s charter to a multisided, nationwide sensation that sorted the US public into ideologically polarized political parties. In doing so, The Bank War and the Partisan Press shows how the conflict played out on the ground level in various states—in riots, duels, raucous public meetings, politically orchestrated bank runs, arson, and assassination attempts. The resulting narrative moves beyond the traditional boxing match between Jackson and bank president Nicholas Biddle, balancing political institutions with individual actors, and business practices with party attitudes.

Описание: Fifty years after Freedom Summer, To Write in the Light of Freedom offers a glimpse into the hearts of the African American youths who attended the Mississippi Freedom Schools in 1964. One of the most successful initiatives of Freedom Summer, more than forty Freedom Schools opened doors to thousands of young African American students. Here they learned civics, politics, and history, curriculum that helped them instead of the degrading lessons supporting segregation and Jim Crow and sanctioned by White Citizen's Councils. Young people enhanced their self-esteem and gained a new outlook on the future. And at more than a dozen of these schools, students wrote, edited, printed and published their own newspapers. For more than five decades, the Mississippi Freedom Schools have served as powerful models of educational activism. Yet, little has been published that documents black Mississippi youths' responses to this profound experience.

Описание: The first newspapers published in Marion, Grant County, Indiana, may have appeared as early as 1840. The earliest extant issue of a Marion newspaper is one from August 18, 1865. It is truly unfortunate that the newspapers published during the Civil War did not survive to tell us about day-to-day happenings. Men came in from the surrounding small farm clearings, forests and prairies to enlist in the State Volunteer Regiments that were formed to force the Confederate States back into the Union. Too many Grant County men and boys either left their bodies on bloody southern fields or they returned home severely handicapped in mind or body. No longer boys or na ve men, the returning men had a greater appreciation of the possibilities for building a better life for themselves and their families right in Marion and Grant County. The years covered by the abstracts in this book saw the coming of the railroads and telegraph, the construction of new roads, and the appearance of industries in Marion that would provide a market for the products of the nearby forests and farms. Exciting changes were occurring in Grant County This user-friendly book is arranged in alphabetical order and includes a full name index of maiden names.

Описание: In this very practical aid to the student of the intellectual and social history of England during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the authors have given a two-fold bibliography and they have supplied two indices, the first chronological and the second geographical. It is a broadly inclusive and convenient finding-list of British periodicals.
This book includes abstracts of marriage and death notices from the following newspapers: The Aegis and Intelligencer, 1864-1871; The Harford Democrat, 1856-1871; The Madisonian (Harford & Baltimore Advertiser), 1837-1857; The Havre de Grace Republican, 1868-1871; and The Southern Aegis (sometimes known as The Southern Aegis and Harford County Intelligencer), 1857-1864. Information was gleaned not only from the marriage and death notices but also from news and local affairs items, as well as executor and administrator notices and also the occasional "removals from voter registration lists" that were published. Entries are arranged alphabetically by surname.
