Описание: Bringing together 70 major critical articles across four volumes, Modern and Contemporary World Drama: Critical and Primary Sources collects scholarly articles, reviews and critical interventions that are indispensable to anyone wishing to gain an understanding of world drama from the past 150 years. Contesting a Eurocentric reading or history of modern drama, the articles underscore the importance of migration and transnational movements of dramatic forms, and place emphasis on the transmission and circulation of dramatic theories around the world. Modern drama is revealed as a worldwide phenomenon in which a diverse array of artists and writers participated and in which modernism is seen to have affected all parts of the world in ways that are much more complex and multi-directional than what has been assumed in Eurocentric models. The four volumes are arranged both thematically and chronologically to give readers a sense of how world modern and contemporary drama began and how it has been studied in the past 150 years. Volume 1: Beginnings This volume includes essays that describe various beginnings of modern drama. Instead of identifying a singular origin of modern drama with a linear chronology, the volume suggests multidirectional and multidimensional beginnings. The geographical area covered in the volume is extensive, and each essay describes different ways to conceptualize time, chronology, and what would be considered innovative in dramatic writing. Volume 2: Theories This volume includes essays that address theoretical questions of modern and contemporary world drama. In many ways, modern drama around the world began as a theoretical endeavor that questioned the fundamentals of the dramatic form. Like the first volume, the second illustrates an array of studies that challenge a singular interpretation of modern and contemporary drama. Many of the essays provide practical applications of dramatic theories, and all of them situate the core analysis in historically and politically specific contexts, and the volume questions what theory means to lived experiences in the era of globalization. Volume 3: Movements This volume includes themes of migration, exchange, national borders, exile, and diaspora, and the theatrical stage is often used as a laboratory to examine key issues of globalization and displacement. The volume also examines other definitions of movements, including political and aesthetic movements that have determined the development of modern and contemporary drama. Like the first two volumes, the third volume prioritizes studies that emphasize the complexities of the global and cosmopolitan experience and refuses to arrive at a narrative with a singular or universal perspective. Volume 4: Twenty-First Century This volume continues many topics raised in the first three volumes and considers how the new millennium has affected the development of modern and contemporary world drama. The essays in the volume examine various developments that are commonly described with the prefix post, as in posthumanism, post-truth, postcolonial, postrace, and post-nation. A number of the essays concern uncertainties around the future of humanity in the age of technological advancements and late capitalism.

Описание:

With over 80 scholarly articles, reviews, and critical interventions from the last 50 years, Bertolt Brecht: Critical and Primary Sources set covers the key periods of Brecht's life, from his time in Augsburg (1898-1918) through the Weimer Republic (1918-1933), exile (1933-1948) and the German Democratic Republic (1949-1956). It also explores his theories, fundamentally his belief in the theatre's ability to represent and change the world, core practices and relationships.

Alongside primary sources that include writings by Brecht published in English for the first time, such as his short but important reflection in 'originality' in theatre production, key featured scholars include Fredric Jameson and his essay 'Episch, or, the Third Person', and pieces on Brecht's collaborative working methods by Claus and Wera K chenmeister, and the director Egon Monk.

Volume 1 covers Brecht's life and work, including essays on his famous Mother Courage and Her Children, production reviews, poetry, novels and short stories, with some thoughts on his journals.

Volume 2 covers theory, containing essays and primary writings on Brechtian terminology, and some of the more enigmatic terms like 'Epic theatre', 'Verfremdung', 'Gestus' and 'Fabel', features a survey of important theoretical works, a section on Brecht on non-theatre media, his relationship to other major thinkers, ideas and sources and the reception of his ideas.

Volume 3
covers practice, including Brecht's practice as documenter and director, beginning with his disastrous start in the Weimar Republic through to his later role as director as the Berliner Ensemble, his relationships with other practitioners and his own collaborators, reviews of important productions and global receptions.

Each volume includes a contextualizing introduction surveying the topics covered and the development of scholarship on Brecht.

Описание:

This book foregrounds some of the ways in which women playwrights from across a range of contexts and working in a variety of forms and styles are illuminating the contemporary world while also contributing to its reshaping as they reflect, rethink, and reimagine it through their work for the stage. The book is framed by a substantial introduction that sets forth the critical vision and structure of the book as a whole, and an afterword that points toward emerging currents in and expansions of the contemporary field of playwriting by women on the cusp of the third decade of the twenty-first century. Within this frame, the twenty-eight chapters that form the main body of the book, each focusing on a single play of critical significance, together constitute a multi-faceted, inevitably partial, yet nonetheless integral picture of the work of women playwrights since 2000 as they engage with some of the most pressing issues of our time. Some of these issues include the continuing oppression of and violence against women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, and ethnic minorities; the ongoing processes of decolonization; the consequences of neoliberal capitalism; the devastation and enduring trauma of war; global migration and the refugee crisis; the turn to right-wing populism; and the impact of climate change, including environmental disaster and species extinction.

The book is structured into seven sections: Replaying the Canon; Representing Histories; Staging Lives; Re-imagining Family; Navigating Communities; Articulating Intersections; and New World Order(s). These sections group clusters of plays according to the broad critical actions they perform or, in the case of the final section, the new world orders that they capture through their stagings of the seeming impasse of the politically and environmentally catastrophic global present moment. There are many other points of resonance among and across the plays, but this seven-part structure foregrounds the broader actions that drive the plays, both in the Aristotelian dramaturgical sense and in the larger sense of the critical interventions that the plays creatively enact. In this way, the seven-part structure establishes correspondences across the great diversity of dramatic material represented in the book while at the same time identifying key methods of critical approach and areas of focus that align the book’s contributors across this diversity. The structure of the book thus parallels what the playwrights themselves are doing, but also how the contributors are approaching their work. Plays featured in the book are from Canada, Australia, South Africa, the US, the UK, France, Argentina, New Zealand, Syria, Brazil, Italy, and Austria; the playwrights include Margaret Atwood, Leah Purcell, YaËl Farber, Paula Vogel, Adrienne Kennedy, Suzan-Lori Parks, debbie tucker green, Lisa Loomer, HÉlÈne Cixous, Anna Deavere Smith, Lola Arias, Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori, Marie Clements, Quiara AlegrÍa Hudes, Alia Bano, Holly Hughes, Whiti Hereaka, Julia Cho, Liwaa Yazji, Grace PassÔ, Dominique Morisseau, Emma Dante, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, Lynn Nottage, Elfriede Jelinek, Caryl Churchill, Colleen Murphy, and Lucy Kirkwood.

Encompassing several generations of playwrights and scholars, ranging from the most senior to mid-career to emerging voices, the book will be essential reading for established researchers, a valuable learning resource for students at all levels, and a useful and accessible guide for theatre practitioners and interested theatre-goers.

Описание:

What does it mean for a play to be political in the 21st century? Does it require explicit engagement with events and situations with the aim of bringing about change or highlighting social wrongs? Is it purely a matter of content or is it also a matter of structure?

The Contemporary Political Play: Rethinking Dramaturgical Structure examines the politics of contemporary 'political' drama. It traces the origins of the contemporary British political play to the emergence of the idea of 'serious drama' in the late 19th century through the work of Bernard Shaw, and argues that a Shavian version of serious drama was inextricably linked to the social and political structures of British society at the time. While political drama is still often thought of as adhering to a Shavian model in which social issues are presented through a dialectical structure, Grochala argues that the different political structures of contemporary Britain give rise to formally inventive dramaturgies that are no less 'serious' or political than their Shavian forebears.

Through analysing the experimental dramaturgies of contemporary plays by playwrights including Caryl Churchill, Simon Stephens, Anthony Neilson, debbie tucker green and Mark Ravenhill, among others, it offers a set of new principles for understanding how a play functions politically and reveals how today the dramaturgical structure of a play is as political as its content.
