During the early years of the Vietnam War, several small cadres of men served their country and their fellow comrades-in-arms from a remote airbase cut out of the jungles of northeast Thailand. The base was named Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, but the men assigned there had a special name for it: "Naked Fanny."
Initially they were assigned to rescue military pilots shot down over Laos or forced to leave their aircraft over Thailand. But as the war expanded, their mission changed and they were asked to fly into hostile situations in North Vietnam, making numerous rescues--detailed here by the pilots who flew them and those who were rescued.
This is a story that has never been told in its entirety but is an integral part of U.S. Air Force aviation history. Scott Harrington has compiled and written the story of those early years of the Vietnam War at the little base just west of the town of Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. After reading it, you'll understand why these fragile aircraft and the men who flew them were often referred to as "Blades of wood - Men of steel."

Описание: In December 1943, Eisenhower was Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe with General Carl Spaatz in command of all US Army Air Force. In January 1944, M/G James Doolittle replaced M/G Ira Eaker to lead the Eighth Air Force. The air battle strategy scenario soon changed. Air strategy at the Casablanca Conference was to take out the Luftwaffe before D-Day. The modified P-51 was now one had in good numbers. Doolittle made a key decision to turn his fighters loose. They would no longer fly with bomber formation but now in fighter sweeps to hit Luftwaffe installations and destroy Luftwaffe fighters as they formed for the intercept. Spaatz and Doolittle prayed for one week of good weather in which massive bomber raids could be launched to flush out get German fighters. During that week, five such bomber attacks attacked key targets. It worked, but at high cost to both sides. Eighth Air Force, Fifteenth Air Force and the RAF lost 369 aircrafts, but the Luftwaffe Fighter Command lost an estimated two thirds of its strength. The Luftwaffe did not show up on D-Day except for a few furtive attacks on the beachheads. The battle for air supremacy was won by the Allies and the progressive decline of the Luftwaffe ensued thereafter. The book will provide insight into a pilots mind who flew such missions and try to give the reader not only the historic background, but a sense of what it must have been like to fly such missions.

Описание: He was just a kid when he first broke the surly bonds of earth. Bitten by the freedom of flight bug on his fifth birthday, Ralph Parr had what seemed like a never-ending horizon in front of him. Thankfully, his parents instilled in him a strong moral compass and the willingness to work, thus framing a young man with an extraordinary goal-oriented personality, traits that would pay off like the lottery years later. Even save his life! Ralph learned many attributes during his adolescent years, but his learning curve was pulled into the vertical when he joined the United States Air Force after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Nobody knew then that he would distinguish himself during a 34-year career by flying combat missions during WWII, Korean War (where he was a Double Ace), and Vietnam War. When undaunted adversity and life-threatening events collide, the book divulges how this true American Patriot digs deep, rises to the top, and perseveres. You will absorb the effects of his red stripe and many life lessons including his "short string" concept.

Описание: Battling flak and enemy fighters over the skies of Europe during World War II, the US Army Air Force Martin B-26 Marauder bomber named Flak-Bait completed a remarkable 201 combat missions, a feat that made it the highest mission scorer of any Allied medium or heavy bomber. For many years the author has held a special interest in the B-26, and especially those of the 387th Bomb Group. It was during his first visit to the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC, over 20 years ago, where Flak-Baits nose section was on display, that he became interested in what the aircraft had achieved during her illustrious career. Using official World War IIera records, the result is a day-by-day account of the missions it flew, crew lists, flight routes, and weapons dropped, and records any comments made by the various crews during their postmission debriefing. A special photo section features the current restoration display of Flak-Bait at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington, DC. Correcting previously held perceptions about the aircraft and its missions, this is the most definitive account of any single World War II aircrafts combat career ever published.
