Описание: The notion of woman as the Devil`s accomplice is prominent throughout Christian history and was used to legitimize the subordination of wives and daughters. In the nineteenth century, rebellious females performed counter-readings of this misogynist tradition and Lucifer was reconceptualized as a feminist liberator. Per Faxneld shows how this surprising Satanic feminism was expressed in a wide range of nineteenth-century texts and artistic productions.

Описание: This book studies the travel accounts of five "lady travelers" to Mexico, the Southern Cone, Brazil, and the Caribbean. As eye-witness accounts, their books record the rise of independent republics in Spanish America. Women`s travels provide a fresh look at indigenous and African populations in the New World and analyze women`s social condition.
Eug?nie Luce was a French schoolteacher who fled her husband and abandoned her family, migrating to Algeria in the early 1830s. By the mid-1840s she had become a major figure in debates around educational policies, insisting that women were a critical dimension of the French effort to effect a fusion of the races. To aid this fusion, she founded the first French school for Muslim girls in Algiers in 1845, which thrived until authorities cut off her funding in 1861. At this point, she switched from teaching spelling, grammar, and sewing, to embroidery—an endeavor that attracted the attention of prominent British feminists and gave her school a celebrated reputation for generations.
The portrait of this remarkable woman reveals the role of women and girls in the imperial projects of the time and sheds light on why they have disappeared from the historical record since then.

Автор: Ruth Whittle Название: Gender, Canon and Literary History: The Changing Place of Nineteenth-Century German Women Writers (1835-1918) ISBN: 3110259222 ISBN-13(EAN): 9783110259223 Издательство: Walter de Gruyter Рейтинг: Цена: 97820 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: It has been shown that the total number of women who published in German in the 18th and 19th centuries was approximately 3,500, but even by 1918 only a few of them were known. The reason for this lies in the selection processes to which the authors have been subjected, and it is this selection process that is the focus ofthe research here presented. The selection criteria have not simply been gender-based but have had much to do with the urgent quest for establishing a German Nation State in 1848 and beyond. Prutz, Gottschall, Krey?ig and others found it necessary to use literary historiography, which had been established by 1835, in order to construct an ideal of ‘Germanness’ at a time when a political unity remained absent, and they wove women writers into this plot. After unification in 1872, this kind of weaving seemed to have become less pressing, and other discourses came to the fore, especially those revolving round femininity vs. masculinity, and races. The study of the processes at work here will enhance current debates about the literary canon by tracing its evolution and identifying the factors which came to determine the visibility or obscurity of particular authors and texts. The focus will be on a number of case studies, but, instead of isolating questions of gender, Gender, Canon and Literary History will discuss the broader cultural context.
