Описание: The United Republic of Tanzania has a predominantly agricultural economy, with agriculture accounting for more than two-thirds of employment in rural areas and representing 30 percent of GDP. Yet, by global standards and even by the standards of Developing Countries, crop yields in the county are low. Using improved seeds and mineral fertilizers is therefore critical to promoting growth in crop productivity, food production and sustaining the natural resource base, especially among the smallholder farmers who subsist on nutrient-poor soils.

In 2016, The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (MALF) of the United Republic of Tanzania requested an assessment of the potential costs and benefits of a proposed Bulk Procurement System (BPS) for fertilizer imports that would consolidate international procurement to save costs, ultimately improving the affordability for farmers. This assessment was jointly carried out and submitted to MALF in 2017 by FAO and the International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC), and presents an analysis of the fertilizer market, the proposed BPS policy, and interviews with over one hundred public, private, and civil society stakeholders. The findings indicate that the proposed system would likely not reduce prices for farmers and could negatively affect availability and market competition – causing prices to increase in the long term. The authors therefore recommend against its implementation pending further consultations, or to pilot the system with careful review and evaluation. The report also presents alternative policy options for the short and medium term to improve overall efficiency in the value chain and ultimately make fertilizer more affordable for Tanzanian smallholder farmers.

Techniques and management practices that reduce ammonia emission are presented and evaluated. With continued research, we will better understand the relationships between ammonia emissions and the most important underlying processes. This information can be used to develop technologies, models and decision support for better management of animal manure, leading to a minimal negative impact on the environment and a strong positive impact on plant production. The thesis makes a contribution to research using basic science to develop applied technological solutions. It also proposes areas for future research that can enable efficient use of manure and reduce environmental pollution.

The pathway of productivity improvement followed so far has, however, been accompanied by an exponential increase in the consumption of nonrenewable form of energy. Manufacture of chemical fertilizers is heavily dependent on energy derived from fossil, which is getting depleted at a very fast rate. On the contrary, biofertilizers require much less energy and are dependent on energy from renewable sources such as products of photosynthesis and organic matter in the soil. The nutrients provided by biofertilizers to the agroecosystem do not pose any health risk to human which is being seriously apprehended by the use of chemical synthetic fertilizers. With almost twice the quantity of plant nutrients being removed from soil than added through fertilizers, the growing nutrient imbalance poses a major threat to sustain soil health and crop productivity. Huge investment will be needed to install factories to meet the growing demand of chemical fertilizers. The fertilizers so produced is not only high price but also the factories themselves have and adverse effect on the environment. Chemical fertilizers are not only costly but growing awareness of environment pollution and limitations of nonrenewable resource may introduce additional constraints. Since the ancient time, mankind has taken advantage of microorganism appreciating their beneficial role in living system. In the later half of last century, their role in agriculture has been recognized as biofertilizers.
