Описание:

This richly illustrated edition of this classic American autobiography sheds new light on Douglass's famous text for a new generation of readers.

Famous orator and former slave Frederick Douglass published his third and last autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, in 1881. No longer in danger as an escaped slave, it goes into greater detail and encompasses Douglass's entire life, from his early years living with his grandmother in Maryland to the events during and after the Civil War, including his meetings with presidents and dignitaries and his deep involvement with the burgeoning suffragist movement. His account reveals what life was like as a slave and how Douglass went on to escape from slavery and then dedicate his life to advocating equality for all people.

Including an introduction by prominent historian and PBS Finding Your Roots host Henry Louis Gates Jr., Douglass's words are augmented by:

  • Historic photographs, memorabilia, and maps
  • Full-color photography of the key Douglass-specific sites and landmarks as they stand today
  • Large sidebars written by soldiers, statesmen, and abolitionists from the antebellum period
  • Pieces by well-known historians and prominent African-Americans
  • New commentary by current historians and writers

Gain an even deeper understanding of one of the most important figures in American history with this illustrated edition of his final autobiography.

Frederick Douglass, one of the most prominent figures in
African-American and United States
history, was born a slave, but escaped to the North and became a well-known
anti-slavery activist, orator, and author. In The Political Thought of
Frederick Douglass, Nicholas Buccola provides an important and original
argument about the ideas that animated this reformer-statesman. Beyond his role
as an abolitionist, Buccola argues for the importance of understanding Douglass
as a political thinker who provides deep insights into the immense challenge of
achieving and maintaining the liberal promise of freedom. Douglass, Buccola
contends, shows us that the language of rights must be coupled with a robust
understanding of social responsibility in order for liberal ideals to be
realized. Truly an original American thinker, this book highlights Douglass’s
rightful place among the great thinkers in the American liberal tradition.

Описание: "A significant contribution that enriches historical narratives. This is a wonderful case study that complicates Latin American history, and particularly labor history in that region, by emphasizing the positive role played by black migrants in labor mobilization in Guatemala."--Jean Muteba Rahier, Florida International University In the late nineteenth century, many Central American governments and countries sought to fill low-paying jobs and develop their economies by recruiting black American and West Indian laborers. Frederick Opie offers a revisionist interpretation of these workers, who were often depicted as simple victims with little, if any, enduring legacy. The Guatemalan government sought to build an extensive railroad system in the 1880s, and actively recruited foreign labor. For poor workers of African descent, immigrating to Guatemala was seen as an opportunity to improve their lives and escape from the racism of the Jim Crow U.S. South and the French and British colonial Caribbean. Using primary and secondary sources as well as ethnographic data, Opie details the struggles of these workers who were ultimately inspired to organize by the ideas of Marcus Garvey. Regularly suffering class- and race-based attacks and persecution, black laborers frequently met such attacks with resistance. Their leverage--being able to shut down the railroad--was crucially important to the revolutionary movements in 1897 and 1920. Frederick Douglass Opie, professor of history and foodways at Babson College, is the author of Hog and Hominy: Soul Food from Africa to America, and a blogger at www.foodsasalens.com.

Описание:

Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland, in February, 1818. From these humble beginnings, Douglass went on to become a world-famous orator, newspaper editor, and champion of the rights of women and African Americans. He was the most prominent African American activist of the 19th century. He remains important in American history because he moved beyond relief at his own personal freedom to dedicating his life to the progress of his race and his country.

This volume offers a short biographical exploration of Douglass' life in the broader context of the 19th century world, and pulls together some of his most important writings on slavery, civil rights, and political issues. Bolstered by the series website, which provides instructors with more images and documents, as well as targeted links to further research, Frederick Douglass: Reformer and Statesman gives the student of American history a fully-rounded glimpse into the world inhabited by this great figure.
