"Can preaching recover a Blues sensibility and dare speak with authority in the midst of tragedy? America is living stormy Monday, but the pulpit is preaching happy Sunday. The world is experiencing the Blues, and pulpiteers are dispensing excessive doses of non-prescribed prosaic sermons with severe ecclesiastical and theological side effects." from chapter 1
Uniquely gifted preacher Otis Moss III helps preachers effectively communicate hope in a desperate and difficult world in this new work based on his 2014 Yale Lyman Beecher Lectures. Moss challenges preachers to preach with a "Blue Note sensibility," which speaks directly to the tragedies faced by their congregants without falling into despair. He then offers four powerful sermons that illustrate his Blue Note preaching style. In them, Moss beautifully and passionately brings to life biblical characters that speak to today's pressing issues, including race discrimination and police brutality, while maintaining a strong message of hope. Moss shows how preachers can teach their congregations to resist letting the darkness find its way into them and, instead, learn to dance in the dark.
In "Preaching That Empowers God's People," Dr. Jeremy Odom presents the case for expository preaching--what this is and why this is the preferable form of preaching. While recognizing some of the dangers of expository preaching (if it is not done right), he argues that the exposition of a passage from Scripture is far less likely to stray from the intent of the Word than are other forms of sermonizing. Odom also argues that biblical exposition must not be confused with interpretation (exegesis). Although the expository sermon includes the results of biblical exegesis, it is much more than the latter. Although in part a defense of expository preaching, Odom's book is much more than this. Not only does he show, by means of practical examples, what an expository sermon might look like, but he also shows how illustrations, stories, analogies, and the like can be used effectively in the context of biblical exposition. He also gives many practical suggestions for how preachers can become better public speakers and therefore more effective presenters of the Gospel. (The last chapter of the book, "Sermon Do's and Don'ts," is one all preachers should read, even those who do not consistently use the expository method.) "Preaching That Empowers God's People" is a worthwhile read for anyone in the pastoral ministry--even those who have been preachers for many years. For that matter, laypeople can also benefit from it, if for no other reason than that it will increase one's understanding of what constitutes good preaching.

Thomas Scirghi, SJ, has trained priests, deacons, and lay ecclesial ministers in the art and theology of preaching for decades. In Longing to See Your Face, he makes his insights and experience accessible to a much wider audience.
Scirghi begins with a discussion of the purpose of preaching and offers a theological sounding on proclamation, taking up several descriptions of the role of the preacher in relation to the congregation. He also addresses current theological issues for the contemporary preacher. The second part of the book discusses the practical matter of preparing to preach and proposes a method of preparation by following a pattern of reflection, research, writing, and rehearsing. The third part focuses on two specific sacramental celebrations: funeral and weddings.

"This book is a clarion call for African American preachers to think more deeply about the aims and ends of their preaching namely to stop putting so much emphasis on celebratory endings to our sermons and focus more on the substantive content in our sermons. Our so-called celebratory preaching, designed to excite the congregation into action through a highly emotional closing of the sermon, has had the opposite effect. Rather than inducing action, it has lulled generations of black congregants to sleep. While we are jumping up and down, shouting, and waving our hands in the air every Sunday during the worship hour, we seem not to notice the growing number of churched and unchurched alike who are becoming powerfully alienated from any form of institutional religion." from the introduction
"Celebration" is a term that has long been used to describe African American preaching, characterized by content that affirms the goodness and powerful intervention of God as well as style that builds from quiet beginnings to an emotionally rich crescendo in conclusion. Cleophus J. LaRue argues that while celebration is one of African American preaching's greatest gifts to the larger church, too many black preachers have become content with the form of celebration volume, vocabulary, pitch, speed, rhythm, and the like to the neglect of its essence the proclamation of the mighty acts of God in the lives of their congregations and communities. This kind of preaching, LaRue contends, fails to address the ongoing problems of the African American community and is powerless to prevent the growing disaffection of black America with the black church. In words both prophetic and practical, LaRue suggests ways to improve black preaching that honor both the form and the power of the African American homiletical practice of celebration. Preachers will learn how to use celebration more selectively and as part of a fully formed preaching practice rather than as a means of distracting the congregation from pressing social and theological questions. The book includes six illustrative sermons from LaRue as well as Paschal Sampson Wilkinson Sr., Brian K. Blount, and Claudette Anderson Copeland."

Описание: Who doesn't love a good story? Storytellers who excel at their craft have the ability to draw readers or listeners into the worlds they create, using characters and situations to entertain and enlighten us. Jesus, the Master Storyteller, often spoke using parables -- short stories that conveyed spiritual truths. By drawing his listeners into his stories, he unlocked their minds and hearts to hear the truth he was relating to them. This compilation of stories for the entire church year, written by Peter Andrew Smith, follows in that same tradition. The stories within CSS Publishing's latest Lectionary Stories for Preaching and Teaching are inspired by the source gospel passages and serve to highlight and illustrate the gospel Jesus taught through his words and life. They can serve as a companion when studying the scripture, as illustrations for sermons, and as devotional material for personal or group use. Smith offers thought-provoking contemplations on Cycle C lectionary passages that draw out the biblical theme by relating it to aspects of modern life we have all experienced. This book may be used for: - Preaching illustrations - "Sermon starters" - Stand-alone sermons - Teaching aides - Inspirational devotional reading
Some chapters included in this volume: - When Tomorrow Comes - Ready to Welcome - The Sound of Good News - God's Grace Makes Anything Possible - Welcoming God's Love Peter Andrew Smith lives in Antigonish, Nova Scotia with his wife, Meredith, daughter Hope, and dog Sophie. A graduate of the University of New Brunswick and the Atlantic School of Theology, he is an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada who has served congregations throughout Atlantic Canada and currently serves at St. James United Church and as a visiting chaplain at St. Francis Xavier University. Election is a strange word when used in theology. It brings to mind old debates about what God might or might not have done before the foundation of the world. But viewed apart from that historical baggage, the word election is about a central gospel idea: that in Jesus not only does God choose to be God for us but chooses us to be for God. The calling of the disciples in the gospels is a story of election, of how God chooses to transform the world by choosing us to be messengers and agents of that transformation.
So it is, says William Willimon, that election becomes not just the content of our preaching but the means as well. God chooses preachers. How unlikely--how odd--is it that God should entrust the proclamation of the gospel to, well, us? This unpredictable, electing God reaches out to save the world and then leaves it in the hands of preachers to get the word out? Through us, through our stammering tongues and faltering hearts, the preached word becomes the Word of God. If you wonder why you drag yourself into the pulpit every Sunday, if you worry that your sermons arent reaching past the front pew, then read this book and be encouraged. God chooses; God chooses preachers; God chooses you.

Описание: John Wesley was once asked why so many people came to hear him preach. His response was, "When you set yourself on fire, people love to come and see you burn". While the question pushed to understand why the masses were so intrigued with Wesley's pulpit, we might well ask today, what is really happening in our pulpits to capture the interest and the attention of today's listener? If we were to survey local congregations, perhaps we would be surprised to learn how many people would like to see a little more fire burning in the pulpit on a Sunday morning! It presses us to ask what preaching is accomplishing in today's contemporary world. Is preaching waking people up or is it painfully lulling them to sleep? Is preaching inspiring, motivating and reaching people where they are, or has the relevancy of this time-honored tradition within the Christian Church lost esteem and effectiveness? Using these initial questions as a launching pad, the pages that follow seek to put the reality of the contemporary pulpit in conversation with a place in history where homiletical fires burned with notable intensity. Drawing from the richness of The Salvation Army's story, we reach back into the Victorian and Edwardian eras (1819-1930) to encounter the aggressive proclamation of a disturbing gospel....Is there still a place for confrontational preaching in the contemporary pulpit? Does this approach to preaching help to address some of the very real challenges we are facing in engaging today's listener?

Описание: The Hebrew prophets were truth-tellers, called to proclaim God's word to the people of their own generations. In this book of sermons Alex Gondola is a truth-teller, carrying on the prophetic tradition by bringing the penetrating message of the Minor Prophets to bear on our twenty-first-century American context. Through the author's use of paraphrase, the telling of stories and his own pastoral interpretation, God's judging and redeeming word spoken by the prophets comes alive in these sermons and challenges us to be bearers of justice and righteousness in our own time and culture. I highly recommend this book of sermons for reading and reflection. Rev. Dr. Steve Rettenmayer Faculty Member of the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies A student and teacher of the word for nearly four decades, Alex Gondola provides a rare glimpse into the lives of the minor prophets, reminding us of God's consistent commands of love, justice, and repentance. As Gondola uncovers the words of the minor prophets, he carefully shows us how to connect their prophetic ministries to our modern lives. "If God measured our home life against the plumb line of God's word, would God find us wanting -- wanting more of the acceptance, tolerance, and patience we are supposed to give?" This is the question Gondola comes back to again and again throughout his examination of the minor prophets, and as we travel back in time with him throughout this lectionary, we begin to understand that the words of the minor prophets hold profound influence toward shaping us as Christ-followers. God's Plumb Line: Preaching from the Not-So-Minor-Prophets is a portal filled with insight and challenge, reminding us to "drink so deeply at the well of worship that justice rolls down like water and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream." Also included for each chapter are hymn suggestions, children's lesson suggestions, discussion questions, and an Annotated Bibliography. Alex A. Gondola Jr. served as an Associate Pastor, Pastor, and Senior Pastor in United Church of Christ congregations since 1975. He retired in 2011 and currently is Interim Pastor at the First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Milford, New Hampshire. A graduate of Allegheny College (B.A.), Andover Newton Theological School (M.Div.), and Colgate Rochester Divinity School (D.Min.), Gondola also has studied at Hartford Seminary and The New College of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland). He is the author of Come As You Are, Don't Forget The Child, Holidays Are Holy Days, Pray Like This... (CSS), and numerous articles.
