Описание: Differential Equations with Mathematica, Fourth Edition is a supplementing reference which uses the fundamental concepts of the popular platform to solve (analytically, numerically, and/or graphically) differential equations of interest to students, instructors, and scientists. Mathematica’s diversity makes it particularly well suited to performing calculations encountered when solving many ordinary and partial differential equations. In some cases, Mathematica’s built-in functions can immediately solve a differential equation by providing an explicit, implicit, or numerical solution. In other cases, mathematica can be used to perform the calculations encountered when solving a differential equation. . Because one goal of elementary differential equations courses is to introduce students to basic methods and algorithms so that they gain proficiency in them, nearly every topic covered this book introduces basic commands, also including typical examples of their application. A study of differential equations relies on concepts from calculus and linear algebra, so this text also includes discussions of relevant commands useful in those areas. In many cases, seeing a solution graphically is most meaningful, so the book relies heavily on Mathematica’s outstanding graphics capabilities.

Описание:

Following the work of Yorke and Li in 1975, the theory of discrete dynamical systems and difference equations developed rapidly. The applications of difference equations also grew rapidly, especially with the introduction of graphical-interface software that can plot trajectories, calculate Lyapunov exponents, plot bifurcation diagrams, and find basins of attraction.

Modern computer algebra systems have opened the door to the use of symbolic calculation for studying difference equations. This book offers an introduction to discrete dynamical systems and difference equations and presents the Dynamica software. Developed by the authors and based on Mathematica, Dynamica provides an easy-to-use collection of algebraic, numerical, and graphical tools and techniques that allow users to quickly gain the ability to:

  • Find and classify the stability character of equilibrium and periodic points
  • Perform semicycle analysis of solutions
  • Calculate and visualize invariants
  • Calculate and visualize Lyapunov functions and numbers
  • Plot bifurcation diagrams
  • Visualize stable and unstable manifolds
  • Calculate Box Dimension

While it presents the essential theoretical concepts and results, the book's emphasis is on using the software. The authors present two sets of Dynamica sessions: one that serves as a tutorial of the different techniques, the other features case studies of well-known difference equations. Dynamica and notebooks corresponding to particular chapters are available for download from the Internet.

Описание: Scattering resonances generalize bound states/eigenvalues for systems in which energy can scatter to infinity. A typical resonance has a rate of oscillation (just as a bound state does) and a rate of decay. Although the notion is intrinsically dynamical, an elegant mathematical formulation comes from considering meromorphic continuations of Green's functions. The poles of these meromorphic continuations capture physical information by identifying the rate of oscillation with the real part of a pole and the rate of decay with its imaginary part. An example from mathematics is given by the zeros of the Riemann zeta function: they are, essentially, the resonances of the Laplacian on the modular surface. The Riemann hypothesis then states that the decay rates for the modular surface are all either $0$ or $\frac14$. An example from physics is given by quasi-normal modes of black holes which appear in long-time asymptotics of gravitational waves. This book concentrates mostly on the simplest case of scattering by compactly supported potentials but provides pointers to modern literature where more general cases are studied. It also presents a recent approach to the study of resonances on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The last two chapters are devoted to semiclassical methods in the study of resonances.

Описание: Fundamentals of mathematical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) start with definitions of major variables and parameters in MHD fluids (also known as MHD media) and specifically plasmas encountered in nature as well as in engineering sytems, e.g., metallurgy or thermonuclear fusion power. Then collisions of fluids in such fluids are examined as well as motion of individual particles. Then the basic principles of MHD fluids are introduced along with transport phenomena, medium boundaries, and surface interactions. Then, waves and resonances of all sorts in MHD media are presented. The account concludes with the description of main MHD fluid types including plasma in fusion power generation.

Описание: Dynamical systems are a principal tool in the modeling, prediction, and control of a wide range of complex phenomena. As the need for improved accuracy leads to larger and more complex dynamical systems, direct simulation often becomes the only available strategy for accurate prediction or control, inevitably creating a considerable burden on computational resources. This is the main context where one considers model reduction, seeking to replace large systems of coupled differential and algebraic equations that constitute high fidelity system models with substantially fewer equations that are crafted to control the loss of fidelity that order reduction may induce in the system response. Interpolatory methods are among the most widely used model reduction techniques, and Interpolatory Methods for Model Reduction is the first comprehensive analysis of this approach available in a single, extensive resource. It introduces state-of-the-art methods reflecting significant developments over the past two decades, covering both classical projection frameworks for model reduction and data-driven, nonintrusive frameworks. This textbook is appropriate for a wide audience of engineers and other scientists working in the general areas of large-scale dynamical systems and data-driven modeling of dynamics.
