Описание: With their spectacularly enlarged canines, sabertooth cats are among the most popular of prehistoric animals, yet it is surprising how little information about them is available for the curious layperson. What's more, there were other sabertooths that were not cats, animals with exotic names like nimravids, barbourofelids, and thylacosmilids. Some were no taller than a domestic cat, others were larger than a lion, and some were as weird as their names suggest. Sabertooths continue to pose questions even for specialists. What did they look like? How did they use their spectacular canine teeth? And why did they finally go extinct? In this visual and intellectual treat of a book, Mauricio Ant?n tells their story in words and pictures, all scrupulously based on the latest scientific research. The book is a glorious wedding of science and art that celebrates the remarkable diversity of the life of the not-so-distant past.

Описание: The Machines Inside Our Brain: Cognitive Mechanisms of Information Processing is an innovative anthology that not only provides students with engaging articles pertaining to brain processes of information processing and storage, but also teaches students how to strategically read, analyze, and digest scientific articles. The collection begins with a comprehensive instructional chapter that teaches students how to approach the consumption and analysis of a scientific article. Readers learn about the compositional features of an article, what it means when an article is peer reviewed, how to effectively annotate an article to increase personal comprehension, and more. Students are then challenged to apply these techniques to the articles within the anthology, then answer a variety of deep, applied questions regarding their contents. The readings within the collection share research cover the variety of cognitive processes that our brains carry out. Specific articles explore attention, automatic processing of information, the manipulation of mental representations, accessing memory, the structure of short-term memory, the nature of knowledge representation, expertise, problem solving, and more. A unique anthology that shares both classic and cutting-edge research while teaching students how to critically examine scientific articles, The Machines Inside Our Brain is well-suited for courses that focus on memory and brain processes, as well as classes that seek to provide a comprehensive survey of cognitive psychology while teaching students to read the primary scientific literature.

Описание: The Evolution of Memory Systems sets out a bold and exciting new theory about memory. It proposes that several memory systems arose during evolution and that they did so for the same general reason: to transcend problems and exploit opportunities encountered by specific ancestors at particular times and places in the distant past.

Описание: Published by Sinauer Associates, an imprint of Oxford University Press. Extensively rewritten and reorganized, this new edition of Evolution-featuring a new coauthor: Mark Kirkpatrick (The University of Texas at Austin)-offers additional expertise in evolutionary genetics and genomics, the fastest-developing area of evolutionary biology. Directed toward an undergraduate audience, the text emphasizes the interplay between theory and empirical tests of hypotheses, thus acquainting students with the process of science.
It addresses major themes-includingthe history of evolution, evolutionary processes, adaptation, and evolution as an explanatory framework-at levels of biological organization ranging from genomes to ecological communities.

One of the most profound paradigms that have transformed our understanding about life over the last decades was the acknowledgement that microorganisms play a central role in shaping the past and present environments on Earth and the nature of all life forms. Each organism is the product of its history and all extant life traces back to common ancestors, which were microorganisms. Nowadays, microorganisms represent the vast majority of biodiversity on Earth and have survived nearly 4 billion years of evolutionary change. Microbial evolution occurred and continues to take place in a great variety of environmental conditions. However, we still know little about the processes of evolution as applied to microorganisms and microbial populations. In addition, the molecular mechanisms by which microorganisms communicate/interact with each other and with multicellular organisms remains poorly understood. Such patterns of microbe-host interaction are essential to understand the evolution of microbial symbiosis and pathogenesis.
Recent advances in DNA sequencing, high-throughput technologies, and genetic manipulation systems have enabled studies that directly characterize the molecular and genomic bases of evolution, producing data that are making us change our view of the microbial world. The notion that mutations in the coding regions of genomes are, in combination with selective forces, the main contributors to biodiversity needs to be re-examined as evidence accumulates, indicating that many non-coding regions that contain regulatory signals show a high rate of variation even among closely related organisms. Comparative analyses of an increasing number of closely related microbial genomes have yielded exciting insight into the sources of microbial genome variability with respect to gene content, gene order and evolution of genes with unknown functions. Furthermore, laboratory studies (i.e. experimental microbial evolution) are providing fundamental biological insight through direct observation of the evolution process. They not only enable testing evolutionary theory and principles, but also have applications to metabolic engineering and human health.
Overall, these studies ranging from viruses to Bacteria to microbial Eukaryotes are illuminating the mechanisms of evolution at a resolution that Darwin, Delbruck and Dobzhansky could barely have imagined. Consequently, it is timely to review and highlight the progress so far as well as discuss what remains unknown and requires future research. This book explores the current state of knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of microbial evolution with a collection of papers written by authors who are leading experts in the field.
