Описание: This volume contains sixteen articles by international experts from different disciplines touching on various aspects on medieval and early modern cults of saints from different corners of Europe, with a special focus on Scandinavian saints and their artistic receptions up to modern times. The saints represented different aspects of a Christian world-view forming the basis of communal identities, still present in post-Reformation Europe. Notions of cultural memory underpin several of the studies in the volume. Moreover, the reader will also find articles concerning the function of saints' cults, in particular how the material culture of these cults was perceived and experienced by the medieval beholder. The book includes a recording of music from the Middle Ages up to modern times focusing on saints and the notion of sanctity.

Описание: How do Christians make relationships with land central to their faith? How have the realities of materiality, geography, and ecology shaped Christian territories of belonging and theologies of territory? What social-economic-political conditions surround exchanges between religion and nature? This book explores how Christianity intersects with nature to create unique religious landscapes. Case studies range from the Mormon Trail across the USA completed by thousands every year, to the Catholic devotional cult of and shrine to St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Contributors examine the entangled forms of agency between nature and culture that are at work as Christians produce, consume, experience, imagine, inhabit, manage, and struggle over formations of land. Focusing on Christian engagements with land forms in the early 21st century, this book advances the spatial turn in the study of religion, contributes to the anthropology of religion and the study of global Christianities, as well as our understanding of the relationship between Christianity, space and place.

Описание: Since the beginning of the anthropology of pilgrimage, scant attention has been paid to pilgrimage and pilgrim places in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe. Seeking to address such a deficit, this book brings together scholars from central, eastern and south-eastern Europe to explore the crossing of borders in terms of the relationship between pilgrimage and politics, and the role which this plays in the process of both sacred and secular place-making. With contributions from a range of established and new academics, including anthropologists, historians and ethnologists, Pilgrimage, Politics and Place-Making in Eastern Europe presents a fascinating collection of case studies and discussions of religious, political and secular pilgrimage across the region.

Описание: With one eye on the motives for and the manners of the production of early Christian narratives of Christian beginnings, and the other eye on modern scholarly and popular motives for and manners of appropriating the early Christian narratives, this book offers a bifocal meditation on the historiographical practices and problems entailed in the concept of Christian "origins". The author begins by examining why and how early and modern Christian "archive fever" (Derrida) converts the mythic notion of "origin" to the historical concept of "beginnings" and that sees in "beginnings" an endlessly redeeming past. The gospel of Mark is an elaborated example of "just another story" that, though it really is just another story, perhaps not a very good one by any accounting, is exalted to the status of a charter narrative that is read as the true story of how it truly was in the past. The story of Jesus, fixed just so by elaborate techniques of producing stories that present themselves as histories, is a second example of early and modern past-making for purposes that are not in the past but for which the past as a constructed ideal is valuable currency in the contest for social and political identity and power in the present. A third example of a constructed past as a fix for modern ills is evident in modern attempts to find in the beginnings of Christianity an ideology that favoured a set of practices that were emancipatory for women. The author exposes this reading as "wishful thinking" historiography and explains why such historiography is compelling both in the academy and in popular thinking. In the final chapter the author engages current historiographical theories in order to explain why the Christian past is like a dead ancestor who refuses to stay dead.
