Описание: At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion -- and indeed our future.

Philosophers of Consciousness is both an expository study of the thought of the six figures it focuses on and an original exploration of the themes they address. In addition, as Eugene Webb states, "it does not hesitate to probe the more problematic areas of the thought of each thinker and to suggest what to some of their advocates will probably seem rather bold and controversial interpreations of their ideas."
The book reveals some deep differences that set the six off against one another in what is basically a clash between the intellectual emphasis of Lonergan and the more existential approaches of the other thinkers in this study. Readers of Kierkegaard may find much of Webb's interpretation surprising and perhaps disturbing.

Автор: Donald Merlin Название: A Mind So Rare: The Evolution of Human Consciousness ISBN: 0393323196 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780393323191 Издательство: Wiley Рейтинг: Цена: 19530.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: In this masterful rebuttal to the prevailing neuroscientific arguments that seek to explain away consciousness, Merlin Donald presents "a sophisticated conception of a multilayered consciousness drawing much of its power from its cultural matrix" (Booklist). Donald makes "a persuasive case...for consciousness as the central player in the drama of mind" (Peter Dodwell), as he details the forces, both cultural and neuronal, that power our distinctively human modes of awareness. He proposes that the human mind is a hybrid product, interweaving a super-complex form of matter (the brain) with an invisible symbolic web (culture) to form a "distributed" cognitive network.
This hybrid mind, he argues, is our main evolutionary advantage, for it allowed humanity as a species to break free of the limitations of the mammalian brain. "Donald transcends the simplistic claims of Evolutionary Psychology,...offering a true Darwinian perspective on the evolution of consciousness."-Philip Lieberman
Summary Of How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence By Michael Pollan - Book Summary - Anthony Young
In the book "How To Change Your Mind," Michael Pollan traces the eventful history of psychedelics, from Hofmann's first encounter with LSD to the first surge of research into the field, to the widespread abuse and misuse followed by a federal government ban, and the recent resurrection of psychedelic research. Psychedelics are probably the world's most controversial class of drugs and in this book, he narrates how they got their reputation.
Pollan is careful to correct the popular conclusion that Timothy Leary was the beginning and end of psychedelics. The author's depth of research is obvious as he chronicles the lives and contributions of scientists, therapists, religious leaders, and countless others who have a place in the psychedelics story.
This book contains a comprehensive, well detailed summary and key takeaways of the original book by Michael Pollan. It summarizes the book in detail, to help people effectively understand, articulate and imbibe the original work by Pollan. This book is not meant to replace the original book but to serve as a companion to it

Through the pages of How to Change Your Mind, you'll experience an entirely new way of looking at the world and the way that things occur within the world. There are plenty of different experiences out there that can and should be explored, and psychedelics could be the way that these experiences are best explored. Michael Pollan looks at different research that has been done throughout a range of different fields, including depression, addiction and "healthy normal" and seeks to find a way that psychedelics could be the answer to the question of how to change our world and improve our sense of "normal."
The researchers are discussed here with reference to some of the patients who have participated in their experiments and been helped in different ways. These patients feel they have been cured, and some of them recognize that they have only improved moderately, but still, all seem to see a difference. There are skeptics and more and even several firsthand accounts of Pollan's experiences and the ones that he has garnered from others. No matter what may be happening in the world at large, there may be a future for psychedelics in changing that future and improving the mental health of all of those around us at the same time.
By exploring each of these types of research Pollan hopes to understand whether psychedelics should be evaluated further and whether the current laws restricting them as Schedule 1 narcotics from the FDA are something that should be reevaluated as well. He seeks, through the course of this book, to evaluate the important nature of psychedelics and all of the things that they have been able to do throughout history as well as throughout different stages of the recent past and even what may happen in the future. Through this process, it's possible to think about the ways that psychedelics and the experiences that occur as a result of them may just be the answer that modern medicine is looking for or could at least hold the key to something different about our consciousness.
