Frantz Fanon's (1925-61) political impact is difficult to overestimate. His anti-colonialist, philosophical and revolutionary writings were among the most influential of the twentieth century. The political essays, articles and notes published in Alienation and Freedom: The Political Writings cover the most active period of his life, from the publication of White Skin, Black Masks in 1952 - when he was twenty-eight years old - to that of The Wretched of the Earth, the appearance of which in 1961 coincided, give or take a few days, with the date of his death from leukaemia at the age of thirty-six.
These political writings represent the sheer breadth and diversity of Fanon's work and this volume is original in that it contains his earliest works to survive, the plays The Drowning Eye and Parallel Hands, which expose an early preoccupation with identity and socio-political consciousness. His writings from Algeria are the most politicised however and are notable for their inflection with Fanon's support for the country's fight against French colonial rule. Indeed, as his role in treating both French and Algerian soldiers grew evermore untenable, his words became more impassioned and represent his decision to cast off his assimilationist upbringing and dedicate himself to revolution.
The insights these works provide give a new depth and complexity to our understanding of Fanon's entire oeuvre and reveal how his powerful thinking about race, identity and activism remain pertinent to modern society. Shedding new light on the work of a major twentieth-century philosopher, this disruptive and moving work will shape how we look at the world.

Watson's analysis concentrates on the roles played by the labour movement, political parties, capitalist interests, and working-class and other popular organizations in Barbados and the British Caribbean, with support from Caribbean-American groups in New York that forged alliances with those black American organizations which saw their freedom struggles in an international context. Practically all the decolonizing (nationalist) elites in Barbados and other British Caribbean territories endorsed a British and American prescription for decolonization and self-government based on territorial primacy and at the expense of a strong West Indian federation that prioritized the working class. This move sidelined the working class and its interests also set back the struggle for self-determination, liberty and sovereignty.Watson situates the role Errol Barrow played in the transformation of Barbados in the wider Caribbean and international context. Описание: Prior to becoming a psychiatrist, Frantz Fanon wanted to be a playwright and his interest in dialogue, narrative and metaphor continued throughout his writing and career. This first English translation of the texts offers an extraordinary insight into Fanon's thinking and preoccupations as a young man. Inspired by nineteenth and twentieth- century existentialist philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Soren Kierkegaard, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, Fanon’s plays explore experiential preoccupations with consciousness and identity. The Drowning Eye is one of Fanon’s earliest explorations of race and is seen to offer a forceful rejection of the contemporary negritude movement of intellectuals such as Aime Cesaire and Leon Damas. In it, Fanon posits that those of a different ethnicity should not be objectified and matters of difference should be matters of indifference. Parallel Heads represents some of Fanon’s most experimental writing. It is a four-act tragedy written in the style of Ancient Greek drama and includes the killing of a king and strong and determined female characters, who frequently criticise their male counterparts. The inclusion of such tropes has been interpreted by critics as the killing of the white, male Father and Fanon’s own indictment of masculine patriarchy, thus supporting the theory that despite his engagement with different genres, a rich revolutionary seam runs throughout his work. The imaginative and violent vocabulary used throughout the plays gives us a totally different kind of Fanon to the writer we encounter later in The Wretched of the Earth .
