"Gooney Bird Driver" is a collection of war stories from C-47 pilot Joe D. Maguire, one of the "forgotten pilots" of the 27th Air Transport Group which carried just about everything across war torn Europe in World War 2, from wounded troops to cans of black and white paint (for adding invasion stripes to aircraft) to the Glenn Miller Band.
Joe completed 35 combat missions, racking up hundreds of hours, often under intense enemy fire, but due to a series of administrative SNAFUs, he and his unit weren't officially recognized for their service until almost 50 years after the war ended. Eventually he was awarded the DFC, Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters and the French Legion d'Honneur, among many other accolades for his courage and devotion to duty.
These are his stories, illustrated with many of his own personal photographs and mementoes, and told in his own words to his son, noted author and historian Jon A. Maguire.

Описание: A remarkable true story of an RAF fighter pilot and his incredible adventures. Nothing perhaps was more astonishing than his survival after hitting a duck at 500 mph and his subsequent fight back to become not only pilot in command once again, but to fly Heads of State and The Queen. A miracle that he is still alive, but amazingly he still flies.
Winner of 20 national book awards, SHOT DOWN is set within the framework of World War II in Europe and recounts the dramatic experiences of each member of a ten man B-17 bomber crew after their plane, piloted by the author's father, was knocked out of the sky by German fighters over the French/Belgian border on February 8,1944.
Some men died. Some were captured and became prisoners of war. Some men evaded capture and were missing in action for months before making it back to England. Their individual stories and those of the courageous Belgian people who risked their lives to help them are all different and are all remarkable.
Even before the dramatic battle in the air and the subsequent harrowing events on the ground, the story is informative, insightful, and captivating. Prior to the fateful event, the book covers the crew's training, their journey to England, what life was like on base as well as in London and the English countryside, and the perils of flying combat missions over occupied Europe and Germany.
Through personal letters, oral and written accounts, declassified military documents, and interviews - all from people who took part in the events that happened over 70 years ago (even the German Luftwaffe pilot who shot down the Susan Ruth) - the stories come alive. Adding to the feeling of "being there", are more than 200 time period photographs interspersed throughout the book.
To add background and context, many historical facts and anecdotes about and surrounding World War II are entwined throughout the book so that the reader has a feel for and understanding of what was occurring on a broader scale. SHOT DOWN is an account about brave individuals, featuring pilot Howard Snyder, set within the compelling events of the greatest conflict in world history.

Roland Garros enjoyed an exciting life. An aviation pioneer in the early 1900s, he taught himself how to fly a bamboo airplane despite crashing it at Versailles. He was a world-class athlete, a lawyer who wouldn't learn Latin, a sports car salesman on the Champs-Elys es, an airshow pilot and racer. He demonstrated flight to huge crowds up and down the Americas. Ultimately, Roland Garros became the world's first fighter pilot.
Leaving his comfortable life in Paris, he flew and fought in the lethal skies of the first World War. Never before had a lone pilot hunted other men in the air. Shot down and captured, he escaped prisoner of war camp, evaded his way across Germany, and crossed the front lines. After a torrid fling in Paris with an exotic dancer, he rejoined his squadron. Garros needed two more aerial victories to become an ace.
This creative non-fiction biography puts you in an open cockpit, in air combat, and in Paris experiencing Belle Epoque pleasures. What was it like to fly across the Mediterranean in a rickety monoplane? How did pilots dogfight in WWI? Fasten your seatbelt for exciting aerial action and the adventure-packed life of Roland Garros, the first fighter pilot
