Описание: This book explores the circulatory culture of fan production and consumption, as embodied by Vocaloids (voice-synthesized virtual characters) and the DTM (desktop music) phenomena, through a close reading of Supercell (2009). This album, the first by Japanese group Supercell, features Hatsune Miku, the Vocaloid character created by Crypton Future Media with voice synthesizers. She is a virtual pop superstar, “singing” in over 100,000 songs uploaded by fans. Supercell consists of eleven members: Ryo, the leader and composer, and ten artists who design album illustrations and make the music videos that are uploaded onto Niconico and other video sharing sites. Prior to releasing Supercell in March 2009, their works using Crypton’s technology had already become well known to Niconico users and to fan circles (doujin). The book examines these issues through the lenses of media and fan studies. The first section of the book focuses on the environmental conditions, or settings— online social media platforms, the new technology for composing, dedicated fans of the Vocaloid characters—that support the activities of these creators. The second section explores Supercell and their works as case studies of Vocaloid use. In its entirety, the book will offer an in-depth discussion of the concepts of participatory culture (Jenkins 2006), database consumption, and derivative works (Azuma 2009). These concepts explain the processes by which the Vocaloid/DTM culture and its fan communities have developed, and by which its creators have been empowered and its works enriched among the circles. The final section analyzes Hatsune Miku’s live performance of Supercell’s works as a 3-D hologram and the performative practices of avid fans in public spaces. In summary, the book provides readers with a sense of how interactive new media and an empowered fan base combine to engage in the creation processes and enhance the circulation of DTM works.

Описание: Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment explains how Mozart's music for Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and CosA¬ fan tutte 'sounds' the intentions of Da Ponte's characters and their relationships with one another. Mozart, by way of the infinitely generative and beautiful logic of the sonata principle, did not merely interpret Da Ponte's characterizations but lent them temporal, musical forms. Charles Ford's analytic interpretation of these musical forms concerns processes and structures in detail and at medium- to long-term levels. He addresses the music of a wide range of arias and ensembles, and develops original ways to interpret the two largely overlooked operatic genres of secco recitative and finales. Moreover, Ford presents a new method by which to relate musical details directly to philosophical concepts, and thereby, the music of the operas to the inwardly contradictory thinking of the European Enlightenment. This involves close readings of late eighteenth-century understandings of 'man' and nature, self and other, morality and transgression, and gendered identities and sexuality, with particular reference to contemporary writers, especially Goethe, Kant, Laclos, Rousseau, Sade, Schiller, Sterne and Wollstonecraft. The concluding discussion of the implied futures of the operas argues that their divided sexualities, which are those of the Enlightenment as a whole, have come to form our own unquestioned assumptions about gender differences and sexuality. Описание: The silent attentiveness expected of concert audiences is one of the most distinctive characteristics of modern Western musical culture. This is the first book to examine the concept of attention in the history of musical thought and its foundations in the writings of German musical commentators of the late eighteenth century. Those critics explained numerous technical features of the music of their time as devices for arousing, sustaining or otherwise influencing the attention of a listener, citing in illustration works by Gluck, C. Two types of attention were identified: the uninterrupted experience of a single emotional state conveyed by a piece of music as a whole, and the fleeting sense of 'wonder' or 'astonishment' induced by a local event in a piece. The principal participants-Rousseau, Diderot, and d'Alembert-were responding to the views of the composer-theorist Jean-Philippe Rameau, who was both a participant and increasingly a subject of controversy.
