Описание:

Mark D. Steinberg explores the work of individuals he recognizes as utopians during the most dramatic period in Russian and Soviet history. It has long been a clichй to argue that Russian revolutionary movements have been inspired by varieties of utopian dreaming - claims which, although not wrong, are too often used uncritically. For the first time, Russian Utopian digs deeper and asks what utopians meant at the level of ideas, emotions, and lived experience.

Despite the fact that many would have resisted the utopian label at the time because of its dismissive meanings, Steinbergs comprehensive approach sees him take in political leaders, intellectuals, writers, and artists (visual, material, and musical), as well as workers, peasants, soldiers, students and others. Ideologically, the figures discussed range from reactionaries to anarchists, nationalists (including non-Russians) to feminists, both religious believers and the militant godless. This innovative text dissects the very notion of the Russian utopian and examines its significance in its various fascinating contexts.

Описание:

The incredible adventures of a French Royalist officer

This is a personal account of the Napoleonic Wars from a rare perspective. The author was a French aristocrat and royalist who fled from Paris as a child after his mother was discovered to be involved in the plot to free Marie-Antoinette. He joined an emigre regiment at an early age and fought with the Portuguese. He later joined the Russian Army, eventually becoming an aide-de-camp to the Tsar, Alexander I. When France invaded Russia in 1812, Rochechouart was mobilised to Tormassov's Russian army fighting at the capture of Minsk and at the Berezina where he witnessed the debacle of the river crossing by the French Army in retreat. He fought in the final battles in Germany which brought about the defeat of Napoleon including Lutzen, Dresden, Kulm and Leipzig, and also in the Six Days Campaign as the allied forces closed upon Paris itself. He became Military Governor of Paris, holding the post until 1821, and was present at the execution of Marshal Ney. This is a fascinating memoir from the perspective of a French nobleman who opposed the First Empire of the French and its emperor. Contains maps and illustrations not present in earlier editions of the book.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Описание: How did a regime that promised utopian-style freedom end up delivering terror and tyranny? For some, the Bolsheviks were totalitarian and the descent was inevitable; for others, Stalin was responsible; for others still, this period in Russian history was a microcosm of the Cold War. The Fate of the Bolshevik Revolution reasons that these arguments are too simplistic. Rather, the journey from Bolshevik liberation to totalitarianism was riddled with unsuccessful experiments, compromises, confusion, panic, self-interest and over-optimism. As this book reveals, the emergence (and persistence) of the Bolshevik dictatorship was, in fact, the complicated product of a failed democratic transition.Drawing on long-ignored archival sources and original research, this fascinating volume brings together an international team of leading scholars to reconsider one of the most important and controversial questions of 20th-century history: how to explain the rise of the repressive Stalinist dictatorship.

Описание:

A remarkably talented linguist, foreign correspondant in Russia from 1904-1921 and Foreign Editor for 'The Times', 'Russia's Greatest Enemy?' traces the fascinating life and career of Harold Williams. This quiet and modest New Zealander played a central role in informing and influencing British opinion on Russia from the twilight of the Tsars, through War and Revolution, to the rise of the Soviet Union. The career of this keen Russophile and fierce opponent of Bolshevism illuminates the pre-World War One movement towards rapprochement with the Tsar, as well as the drive for intervention and isolation in the Soviet period. In this fascinating study Charlotte Alston explores the role of Williams as the interpreter of Russia to the British and the British to Russia in this turbulent period in the history of both countries

Описание: Melissa K. Stockdale’s Readings on the Russian Revolution brings together and contextualizes sixteen of the most important writings on the history of the Russian Revolution. It is structured in such a way as to highlight key debates in the field and contrasting methodological approaches to the revolution in order to help readers better understand the issues and interpretative fault lines that exist in this contested area of history. The book opens with an original introduction which provides essential background and vital context for the pieces that follow. The volume is then structured around four parts – ‘Actors and Agency’, ‘War, Revolution, Empire’, ‘Revolutionary Dreams and Identities’ and ‘Outcomes and Impacts’ – that ensure a detailed exploration of the beginnings, events and outcomes of the Russian Revolution, as well as examinations of the central figures, key topics and major historiographical battlegrounds. Melissa K. Stockdale selects and individually introduces vital scholarship from leading US- and UK-based academics and also provides translations of two crucial Russian-language works, published here in English for the first time. The book also includes 20 images, 10 maps and useful pedagogical features, such as further reading lists, a glossary and a chronology, to further aid study. Readings on the Russian Revolution is, quite simply, an essential collection for anyone studying the Russian Revolution.

Описание:

Abandoning the usual Cold War–oriented narrative of postwar European protest and opposition movements, this volume offers an innovative, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive perspective on two decades of protest and social upheaval in postwar Europe. It examines the mutual influences and interactions among dissenters in Western Europe, the Warsaw Pact countries, and the nonaligned European countries, and shows how ideological and political developments in the East and West were interconnected through official state or party channels as well as a variety of private and clandestine contacts. Focusing on issues arising from the cross-cultural transfer of ideas, the adjustments to institutional and political frameworks, and the role of the media in staging protest, the volume examines the romanticized attitude of Western activists to violent liberation movements in the Third World and the idolization of imprisoned RAF members as martyrs among left-wing circles across Western Europe.

Описание: In 1917 revolutionary fervour swept through Russia, ending centuries of imperial rule and instigating political and social changes that would lead to the formation of the Soviet Union. Arising out of proletariat discontent with the Tsarist autocracy and Lenin's proclaimed version of a Marxist ideology, the revolutionary period saw a complete overhaul of Russian politics and society and led directly to the ensuing civil war. The Soviet Union eventually became the world's first communist state and the events of 1917 proved to be one of the turning-points in world history, setting in motion a chain of events which would change the entire course of the twentieth century. Geoffrey Swain provides a concise yet thorough overview of the revolution and the path to civil war. By looking, with fresh perspectives, on the causes of the revolution, as well as the international response, Swain provides a new interpretation of the events of 1917, published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the revolution.

Описание: The symposium entitled Vekhi, or Landmarks, is one of the most famous publications in Russian intellectual and political history. Its fame rests on the critique it offers of the phenomenon of the Russian intelligentsia. It was published in 1909, under the editorship of Mikhail Gershenzon, as a polemical response to the revolution of 1905, the failed outcome of which was deemed by all the Landmarks contributors to exemplify and illuminate fatal philosophical, political, and psychological flaws in the revolutionary intelligentsia that had sought it. Its fame persists until today not least because the volume has been deemed by many in Russia and the West to have proven prophetic in its prediction (and urgent warning) that the realisation of the intelligentsia’s platform would bring ruin upon Russia. More than any other text, its republication in 1991 symbolically heralded the end of the ideological hegemony of Marxist-Leninism in the Soviet Union.
