Описание: Personality Disorders: What We Know and Future Directions For Research first presents an overview of the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders5th Edition conceptualisation of personality disorders. After discussing the strengths and limitations of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders5th Editions categorical approach to personality disorder classification, the authors review relevant literature pertaining to the trait and temperament model operationalised in the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality.Next, this collection examines dynamic interpersonal processes associated with the etiology and maintenance of personality impairment using an experience sampling methodology and two different data analytic approaches to quantify how patients perceptions of self and other influence their symptom expression, emotions and functioning in daily life. The authors study the structural validity of a brief form of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in a sample of college students identifying as black/or African American. Consistent with previous research, results suggest that the measure conforms to a higher-order five-factor structure. However, results also indicate that traits are associated with depressive symptoms and alcohol use in different ways than in white samples, suggesting differences in the validity of maladaptive traits across race. The closing chapter aims to discuss the differences between the clinical constructs of psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder. Specifically, psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder are compared and contrasted via a review of the literature. Subsequent implications for the treatment of criminal behavior are described, and a discussion on future research is provided.

Описание: Juvenile justice centers have a long tradition as an unfortunate stop for young offenders who need mental health care. Reports estimate that as many as 70% of the youth in detention centers meet criteria for mental health disorders. As juvenile justice systems once again turn their focus from confinement to rehabilitation, mental health providers have major opportunities to inform and improve both practice and policy. The Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology and Psychiatry explores these opportunities by emphasizing a developmental perspective, multifaceted assessment, and evidence-based practice in working with juvenile offenders. This comprehensive volume provides insights at virtually every intersection of mental health practice and juvenile justice, covering areas as wide-ranging as special populations, sentencing issues, educational and pharmacological interventions, family involvement, ethical issues, staff training concerns, and emerging challenges. Together, its chapters contain guidelines not only for changing the culture of detention but also preventing detention facilities from being the venue of choice in placing troubled youth. Key issues addressed in the Handbook include: * Developmental risks for delinquency. * Race and sex disparities in juvenile justice processing. * Establishing standards of practice in juvenile forensic mental health assessment. * Serving dually diagnosed youth in the juvenile justice system. * PTSD among court-involved youth. * Female juvenile offenders. * Juvenile sex offenders. The Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology and Psychiatry is an essential reference for researchers, professors, allied clinicians and professionals, and policy makers across multiple fields, including child and school psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, developmental psychology, criminology, juvenile justice, forensic psychology, neuropsychology, social work, and education.

Описание: The metaphor of the monster or predator—usually a sexual predator, drug dealer in areas frequented by children, or psychopathic murderer—is a powerful framing device in public discourse about how the criminal justice system should respond to serious violent crimes. The cultural history of the monster reveals significant features of the metaphor that raise questions about the extent to which justice can be achieved in both the punishment of what are regarded as "monstrous crimes" and the treatment of those who commit such crimes. This book is the first to address the connections between the history of the monster metaphor, the 19th century idea of the criminal as monster, and the 20th century conception of the psychopath: the new monster. The book addresses, in particular, the ways in which the metaphor is used to scapegoat certain categories of crimes and criminals for anxieties about our own potential for deviant, and, indeed, dangerous interests. These interests have long been found to be associated with the fascination people have for monsters in most cultures, including the West. The book outlines an alternative public health approach to sex offending, and crime in general, that can incorporate what we know about illness prevention while protecting the rights, and humanity, of offenders. The book concludes with an analysis of the role of forensic psychiatrists and psychologists in representing criminal defendants as psychopaths, or persons with certain personality disorders. As psychiatry and psychology have transformed bad behavior into mad behavior, these institutions have taken on the legal role of helping to sort out the most dangerous among us for preventive "treatment" rather than carceral "punishment."
