Описание: This book consists of 10 Chapters in 4 Parts. The first Part is an introduction and contains Chapter 1 to introduce the book chapters to the audiences. The second Part consists of two chapters under the name, Impact of Climate Change on Crop Production and the Physiological and Biochemical Basis for Crops Tolerance. The Chapter 2 focus on critical periods of crop plants to stress conditions and the expected impacts of climate changes mainly on the productivity and quality of field crops. While, Chapter 3 highlights the foundations of crop tolerance to environmental stress and plant traits relevant to stress tolerance. It is devoted to explain and discuss mechanisms of adaptation to environmental stress conditions and addresses various plant traits related to stress environmental tolerance i.e. phenological, morpho-physiological and biochemical traits which could be used as selection criteria for crops improvement. The third Part consists of 5 Chapters under the theme “Improve Crop Adaptability and Stability to Climate Change and Modern Technology. Chapter 4 highlights the most important strategic food grain crop (wheat), Chapter 5 focuses the important staple food crop (rice), while Chapter 6 deals with one of the most important food legume crops (faba bean). Chapter 7 and 8 discuss two important oil crops (sesame and sunflower). However, Chapter 9 focuses on cotton as one of the most important fiber crops. The author addresses these crops under the following headings: genotype x environment interaction and its relation to climatic change on yield production, performance of genotypes in response to environmental changes, adaptability and yield stability to environmental conditions, additive main effects and multiplicative interaction model, gene action, genetic behavior and heritability for traits related to environmental stress tolerance, role of recent approaches, biotechnology and nanotechnology. This is besides how can measure sensitivity of genotypes to environmental stress, and finally the appropriate agricultural practices to mitigate environmental stress on crops under attention. The book ends with Chapter No. 10 where the author presents an update of the book topics, present the most important conclusions and recommendations from all chapters. This book has been prepared and supported by recent references and statistics with coloured tables and illustrations for audiences interested in crop science, environment, plant breeding, genetics and biotechnology, as well as postgraduate students and researchers in universities and research centres.

Описание:

Future climatic and agro-ecological changes in Africa are uncertain and associated with high degrees of spatial and temporal variability and this change is differently simulated within divergent climate-crop models and in controlled crop breeding stations. Furthermore, uncertainty emerges in local contexts, not just in response to climatic systems, but to social, economic, and political systems, and often with implications for the appropriateness and adoption of technologies or the success of alternative cropping systems.

This book examines the challenges of adaptation in smallholder farming in Africa, analysing the social, economic, political and climatic uncertainties that impact on agriculture in the region and the range of solutions proposed. Drawing on case studies of genetically modified crops, conservation agriculture, and other 'climate smart' solutions in eastern and southern Africa, the book identifies how uncertainties are framed 'from above' as well experienced 'from below', by farmers themselves. It provides a compelling insight into why ideas about adaptation emerge, from whom, and with what implications.

This book offers a unique perspective and will be highly relevant to students of climate change adaptation, food security and poverty alleviation, as well as policy-makers and field practitioners in international development and agronomy.

Описание: The countries that make up the MENA region display wide diversity. One of the poorest countries in the world sits alongside two of the wealthiest, whilst the region's natural resources range from immeasurable oil and gas reserves to some of the scantiest natural endowments anywhere in the world. Yet through this diversity runs a common thread: water scarcity. Now, through the impact of human development and climate change, the water resource itself is changing, bringing new risks and increasing the vulnerability of all those dependent on water. Chris Ward and Sandra Ruckstuhl assess the increased challenges now facing the countries of the region, placing particular emphasis on water scarcity and the resultant risks to livelihoods, food security and the environment. They evaluate the risks and reality of climate change in the region, and offer an assessment of the vulnerability of agriculture and livelihoods. In a final section, they explore the options for responding to the new challenges, including policy, institutional, economic and technical measures.

Livestock Activity Data Guidance (L-ADG): Methods and guidance on compilation of activity data for Tier 2 livestock GHG inventories

Описание: The purpose of the Livestock Activity Data Guidance (L-ADG) is to improve the accuracy of livestock emission estimates in national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and enable countries to measure and report progress towards their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Livestock emissions – including enteric fermentation, manure management and emissions from dung and urine deposited on pasture – account for about 11 percent of global GHG emissions.

A recent review found that among 140 developing countries, 92 have included livestock-related emissions in their NDCs. However, very few have national GHG inventories that are able to track changes in livestock emissions resulting from mitigation policies and measures, which requires a Tier 2 approach as defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This occurs because a lack of activity data and incomplete or poor-quality data hamper the use of the Tier 2 approach.

The L-ADG focuses on estimating activity data from the main ruminant types found in developing countries - cattle, sheep and goats - and provides guidance on how to: identify and assess the availability and quality of existing activity data; structure a Tier 2 inventory to make use of available data; compile activity data when data exists but is incomplete or of insufficient quality; estimate activity data when data is missing; and assess the quality of data and identify priorities for continuous improvement.

Indicators to Monitor and Evaluate the Sustainability of Bioeconomy: Overview and a Proposed Way Forward

Описание: This report reviews existing approaches for monitoring and evaluation of bioeconomy activities in order to identify already available indicators, from which the authors compiled two comprehensive lists: one listing indicators at the territorial level, including bioeconomy-relevant Sustainable Development Goals indicators; the other mentioning indicators at the product/value chain level, including indicators used for standards, certificates and labels.

According to the report, almost fifty countries have placed the promotion of the bioeconomy on their political agendas. However, bioeconomy activities are not necessarily sustainable. For this reason, FAO developed a set of Aspirational Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Bioeconomy, through which it seeks to provide technical assistance to countries in developing and monitoring the sustainability of bioeconomy activities.

To conclude, the authors propose a stepwise approach to select indicators for monitoring and evaluating the sustainability of the bioeconomy as a possible way forward to help countries and practitioners in their monitoring and evaluation efforts. This approach includes stakeholder engagement, the choice of the relevant territorial level, as well as effective communication of the results.
