In September of 1609, he published the second edition with additional material and revisions. On December 28th, 1622, St. Francis died at the age of 55. He was canonized a Saint in 1665 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877.

Approaching God explores the ways in which phenomenology, metaphysics and theological enquiry can throw light upon each other. Masterson maintains that all three approaches are needed in trying to speak appropriately about God--they are irreducible but complementary.

State of nature theories, transformed yet retained in the broader metaphysical and existential implications of the Hegelian Weltgeist, are shown to be indebted to the ideological restrictedness of pure nature (natura pura) as providing the foremost adversary to any meaningful type of divine presence within the polis, as well as inhibiting the phenomenological facticity of man as an open nature.
