A classic work on radical aesthetics by one of the great philosophers of the early twentieth century
No work of philosopher and essayist Jos Ortega y Gasset has been more frequently cited, admired, or criticized than his response to modernism, "The Dehumanization of Art." The essay, originally published in Spanish in 1925, grappled with the newness of nonrepresentational art and sought to make it more understandable to the public. Many embraced the essay as a manifesto extolling the virtues of vanguard artists and promoting efforts to abandon the realism and the romanticism of the nineteenth century. Others took it as a denunciation of everything that was radical about the avant-garde. This Princeton Classics edition makes this essential work, along with four of Ortega's other critical essays, available in an English translation. A new foreword by Anthony J. Cascardi considers how Ortega's philosophy remains relevant and significant in the twenty-first century.

Описание: A beautifully written study of three pioneering artists, entwining their work and our understanding of creativity Bringing the creative process of three contemporary artists into conversation, Architectures of the Unforeseen stages an encounter between philosophy and art and design. Its gorgeous prose invites the reader to think along with Brian Massumi as he thoroughly embodies the work of these artists, walking the line that separates theory from art and providing equally nurturing sustenance for practicing artists and working philosophers.Based on Massumi’s lengthy-and in two cases decades-long-relationships with digital architect Greg Lynn, interactive media artist Rafael-Lozano Hemmer, and mixed-media installation creator Simryn Gill, Architectures of the Unforeseen delves into their processes of creating art. The book’s primary interest is in what motivates each artist’s practice-the generative knots that inspire creativity-and in how their pieces work to give off their unique effects. More than a series of profiles or critical pieces, Massumi’s essays are creative, developing new philosophical concepts and offering rigorous sentiments about art and creativity.Asking fundamental questions about nature, culture, and the emergence of the new, Architectures of the Unforeseen is important original research on artists that are pioneers in their field. Equally valuable to the everyday reader and those engaged in scholarly work, it is destined to become an important book not only for the fields of digital architecture, interactive media, and installation art, but also more basically for our knowledge of art and creativity.

Описание: Georg Simmel is one of the most original German thinkers of the twentieth century and is considered a founding architect of the modern discipline of sociology. Ranging over fundamental questions of the relationship of self and society, his influential writings on money, modernity, and the metropolis continue to provoke debate today. Fascinated by the relationship between culture, society, and economic life, Simmel took an interest in myriad phenomena of aesthetics and the arts. A friend of writers and artists such as Auguste Rodin, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Stefan George, he wrote dozens of pieces engaging with topics such as the work of Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Rodin, Japanese art, naturalism and symbolism, Goethe, "art for art's sake", art exhibitions, and the aesthetics of the picture frame.
This is the first collection to bring together Simmel's finest writing on art and aesthetics, and many of the items appear in English in this volume for the first time. The more than forty essays show the protean breadth of Simmel's reflections, covering landscape painting, portraiture, sculpture, poetry, theater, form, style, and representation. An extensive introduction by Austin Harrington gives an overview of Simmel's themes and elucidates the significance of his work for the many theorists who would be inspired by his ideas.
Something of an outsider to the formal academic world of his day, Simmel wrote creatively with the flair of an essayist. This expansive collection of translations preserves the narrative ease of Simmel's prose and will be a vital source for readers with an interest in Simmel's trailblazing ideas in modern European philosophy, sociology, and cultural theory.

Deeply learned, and with a style all his own, Marco Grassi is as at home with Duccio as he is with Norton Simon; Bronzino as with Bernard Berenson; a painting on his desk as with a Last Supper in Florence's Basilica of Santa Croce. In the Kitchen of Art selects the art conservator and dealer's most memorable contributions to The New Criterion over a span of nearly twenty years. Beginning with a previously unpublished memoir of his own Florentine upbringing, and continuing with in-depth critical discussions of the greats of Italian art along with recollections of the grandest collectors of the twentieth century, this book shows the art world in the round.

Описание: Critical analyses of some of the major European artists and movements in the twentieth century, delivered with verve and insight.
The ten essays in After the Wagnerian Bouillabaisse offer original critical discussions of some of the major European artists and movements in the twentieth century, beginning with important reassessments of Italian Futurism and the unique and disruptively consequential compounding of words and images in Dada and Surrealism. Welchman writes with verve and insight about the production, and circumvention, of affect in the work of Henri Matisse and Fernand L ger; the delirious splits and metaphorical ricochets fired up by Salvador Dal ; and the social and philosophical ideas mobilized by Ren Magritte. The second half of the volume examines mid- and later-twentieth century artists, offering a revisionist assessment of Hans Hartung; a new analysis of major themes and issues in the work of Antoni T pies; a meditation on "whiteness" in the practice and thinking of G nter Brus; and an exploration of exchanges between the US and the UK about sculpture between 1945 and the 1970s. The book concludes with an essay on the relations between writing and seeing in the work of Swiss artist R my Zaugg. The volume is the second in Welchman's series XX-XXI on European art from this and the last century.
