But sensibility is not just a faculty: We are sensible objects both to ourselves and to others, and our life is through and through a sensible life. Coccia begins by defining the ontological status of images. Not just an internal modification of our consciousness, an image has an intermediate ontological status that differs from that of objects or subjects. The book’s second part explores our interactions with images in dream, fashion, and biological facts like growth and generation. Our life, Coccia argues, is the life of images.
Martin Heidegger and Michel Foucault are two of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Philia-sophia, loving wisdom, is no longer understood as possession of anything—not of knowledge, truth, the other, or even of oneself. Rather, Merleau-Ponty’s work gives voice to a wisdom of dispossession that allows for the withdrawal of being.
