Описание: The rapid progression of technology has significantly impacted population growth, urbanization, and industrialization in modern society. These developments, while positive on the surface, have created critical environmental problems in recent years.Biostimulation Remediation Technologies for Groundwater Contaminants is a critical scholarly publication that examines the release of heavy metals into the environment as a result of human activities and the use of nanoparticles and other technologies to manage and treat the effects of the pollution. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as toxicity of heavy metals, bioremediation, and acclimated bacterial strains, this book is geared toward environmentalists, engineers, academics, researchers, and graduate-level students seeking current research on bioremediation as an alternate way to manage or degrade heavy metal waste.

Описание:

Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Water and Wastewater: Advanced Treatment Processes presents the state-of-the-art in the design and use of adsorbents, membranes, and UV/oxidation processes, and the challenges that will need to be addressed to close the gap between development and implementation in water/wastewater treatment applications.

This book contains information related to: adsorbent and membrane design and performance; direct comparison of performance data between new (inorganic and metal organic nanoporous materials) and classic adsorbents and membranes; list of advantages, disadvantages, and challenges related to performance limitations, regenerability, and upscaling; identification of potential site and off-site applications according to adsorbent and membrane types; transformation of CECs in low- and/or medium-pressure UV irradiation processes used for disinfection; oxidation of CECs by chlorine and ozone; and, comparison of advanced oxidation processes for treatment of a variety of CECs in water and wastewater.

  • Addresses the advantages/disadvantages of select technologies, including energy resources needs and waste management issues of reverse osmosis among other issues applicable to adsorption and oxidation systems
  • Present information on the advancements of technology within the realm of "Engineered Treatments of CECs"
  • Focuses on the inherent science and technology of advanced treatment processes, which readers will be able to apply fundamental principles to various classes of CECs

Описание: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has implemented all of the recommendations GAO made in its May 2011 report to improve the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) program. EPAs UCMR program collects data on unregulated contaminants in the nations drinking water. EPA uses this data and other information to make decisions on whether to regulate additional drinking water contaminants. This book examines the extent to which EPA implemented GAOs prior recommendations to improve the program and opportunities, if any, to strengthen it further; the factors EPA considered when it selected the UCMR3 contaminants and the limitations, if any, it faced in selecting them; and the extent to which UCMR data support regulatory determinations. It also discusses and summarises the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its major programs and regulatory requirements.

Описание: Congress has long deliberated on the condition of drinking water infrastructure and drinking water quality as well as the financial and technical challenges some public water systems face in ensuring the delivery of safe and adequate water supplies. Several events and circumstances -- including source water contamination incidents; water infrastructure damage from natural disasters, such as hurricanes; detection of elevated lead levels in tap water in various cities and schools; and the nationwide need to repair or replace aging drinking water infrastructure -- have increased national attention to these issues. Americas Water Infrastructure Act of 2018. Chapter 1 focuses on the drinking water provisions of Title II and Title IV of AWIA, which authorize appropriations for several drinking water and wastewater infrastructure programs for projects that promote compliance, address aging drinking water infrastructure and lead in school drinking water, and increase drinking water infrastructure resilience to natural hazards. Chapter 2 summarizes the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its major programs and regulatory requirements. The quality of water delivered by public water systems has been regulated at the federal level since enactment of the 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Since then, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued regulations for more than 90 contaminants, and all states (except Wyoming) have assumed primary responsibility for administering the federal drinking water program and overseeing public water system compliance. Congress last broadly amended the law in 1996. Among the key provisions, the 1996 amendments authorized a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) program to help public water systems finance improvements needed to comply with federal drinking water regulations and to address the most serious risks to human health as reported in chapter 3. Drinking water contaminated with lead in Flint, Michigan, renewed awareness of the danger lead poses to the nations drinking water supply. Lead exposure through drinking water is caused primarily by the corrosion of plumbing materials, such as pipes, that carry water from a water system to pipes in homes. EPA set national standards to reduce lead in drinking water with the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR). Chapters 4-7 review the issue of elevated lead in drinking water. According to DOD, about 3 million people in the United States receive drinking water from DOD public water systems, which are to comply with EPA and state health-based regulations. EPA and DOD have detected elevated levels of two unregulated, DOD-identified emerging contaminants found in firefighting foam -- PFOS and PFOA in drinking water at or near installations. Perchlorate, an unregulated chemical used by DOD in rocket fuel, can also be found in drinking water. Chapters 8-11 review DOD management of these drinking water contaminants.
