As sunrise unveiled the silhouette of Table Mountain, Flemming, aged 23, stepped ashore in Cape Town to start his peregrine career under the deepening shadow of apartheid. He was born Danish in colonial Malaya and fled the Japanese invasion to spend World War II in Australia as a refugee before returning to liberated Denmark. His education included the perils of wartime, trauma of family separations, deprivations of post-war recovery and ten schools before graduation from Cambridge University.
Flemming rises to become CEO of Metal Box South Africa, at the confluence of economic enterprise and sociopolitical turbulence engendered by creeping apartheid. The Sharpeville massacre jolts the world. He has an unbeknownst brush with history as a dinner guest of his friend, Arthur Goldreich, later identified as the covert head of the Communist Party's military wing in Sub-Saharan Africa, and learns that the dignified servant in pristine white uniform attending to his needs at dinner was Nelson Mandela in hiding. In London he proudly appears before a House of Commons Committee of Enquiry into the conditions of blacks employed by British companies in South Africa, proving The Manchester Guardian's reporter, Adam Raphael, to be deviously dishonest.
Flemming is betrayed by British colleagues and realizes that any reversal of apartheid is not in the cards, so he and his South African wife move to America, where he joins Continental Can Company. Promotion takes him back to Europe's industrial arena, where the post-war stranglehold of socialism is still obstructing recovery. Dutch and German corporate politics are as vicious as those of the UK and America. New challenges are welcomed in the USA, but the eight-year stint with Continental Can ends with a corporate dogfight.
The leveraged buyouts (LBOs) of the 80s prompt Flemming to persuade Lazard in New York to help organize the acquisition of American Can Company's Canadian subsidiary. The lead investor is Onex Capital of Toronto, so the family moves north for Flemming to become CEO. A good start allows the company to go public as Onex Packaging Inc., but it takes longer than predicted for capital investment and management upgrades to kick in. The Onex financiers get the wobbles, so relationships snap before a dramatic return to profitability is rewarded by the stock market. When Onex and Ball Corporation take the company private Flemming is bought out.
Back in the States, another project is launched. Four industrialists acquire Brockway Standard Inc., a victim of neglect with plants across the Sunbelt states. The author becomes CEO with a partner as COO and two controlling investors as directors. The turnaround thrives and goes public, but again conflicts arise, so he resigns.
Flemming volunteers in New York's inner city as a director of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement, where self help is a cornerstone of the agency's promotion of good citizenship and self-sufficiency. Riis's principles are reflected in the author's closing thoughts or hobby horses:

Описание: The parallel between poetry and painting harks back to Antiquity. It seemed obvious because both arts appeal to the intellect as well as the eye. In his Ars poetica (approx. 20 b.C.), Horace gave a terse formulation to the parallel: ut pictura poesis. Later critics dislodged what was in Horace just an obiter dictum, from its context, which in Horace referred to the appropriate distance of a beholder/reader from a picture/text. In English literature, the Neo-Classical cult of the Ancients straddling the year 1700 produced a spate of translations of Horaces Ars poetica, and the translators accompanying comments suggest a wide range of idiosyncratic applications of the Latin poets maxim. One form of poetical expression of the parallel particularly favoured by English Neo-Classical poets was landscape description. However, landscapes had to fight opposition on two fronts, viz. the rigid Neo-Classical canon, and the prevalent mould of the description of outdoor scenery as seen in eg pastorals. This book traces the development of the maxim ut pictura poesis from a topos to a genre, viz. the Neo-Classical landscape poem. The typical poem belonging to that genre, which is given a detailed analysis in the pages of this book, contains a number of stock ingredients that meet the eyes of a beholder, who is also the narrator. Underneath the scene is a low-key social analogy, an intimation of a virtually unspoilt utopian society. At the same time, an undertone of anxiety for the preservation of this summum bonum is perceptible, and in James Thomsons landscapes, dating from the 1720s, the reader feels the approach of the attitude to the items of natura naturata that we find in Wordsworth and Keats.

Eliot agreed with Locke about the necessity of sensory input, but for a poet to be able to create poetry, the input has to be processed by the poets intellect. Respect for control of feelings and order of presentation were central to Eliots conception of literary criticism. The result the objective correlative is not one word, but "a scene" or "a chain of events". Eliots thinking was also inspired by late 19th century French critics like Gautier and Gourmont, whose terminology he not infrequently borrowed. But he chose the term "objective" out of respect for the prestige that still surrounded the Positivist paradigm. In its break-away from Positivist dogmas, criticism of art in the early 20th century was very much preoccupied with form. In poetry, that meant focus on the use and function of the word. That focus is perceptible everywhere in Eliots criticism. Even though the idea of the objective correlative was not an original one, Eliots treatment of it is interesting because he sees a seeming truism ("the right word in the right place") in a new light. He never developed the theory, but the thought is traceable in several of his critical essays. On account of its categorical and rudimentary form, the theory is not unproblematic: whose fault is it if the readers response does not square with the poets intention? And indeed, Eliots own practice belies his theory -- witness the multifarious legitimate interpretations of his poems.
