Описание: Child poverty is one of today`s biggest challenges. In this book, it is investigated from a philosophical perspective, primarily in the context of modern welfare states. The injustices of child poverty are identified, related to the well-being of children, and it is discussed who has a moral responsibility to secure social justice for children.

Описание: The number of children living in families with incomes below the federal poverty level increased by 33 percent between 2000 and 2009, resulting in over 15 million children living in poverty. Some of these children are able to overcome this dark statistic and break the intergenerational transmission of poverty, offering hope to an otherwise bleak outlook, but this raises the question--how? In Fostering Resilience and Well-being in Children and Families in Poverty, Dr. Valerie Maholmes sheds light on the mechanisms and processes that enable children and families to manage and overcome adversity. She explains that research findings on children and poverty often unite around three critical factors related to risk for poverty-related adversity: family structure, the presence of buffers that can protect children from negative influences, and the association between poverty and negative academic outcomes, and social and behavioral problems. She discusses how the research on resilience can inform better interventions for these children, as poverty does not necessarily preclude children from having strengths that may protect against its effects. Importantly, Maholmes introduces the concept of "hope" as a primary construct for understanding how the effects of poverty can be ameliorated. At the heart of the book are interviews with family members who have experienced adversity but managed to overcome it through the support of targeted programs and evidence-based interventions. Student leaders provide unique perspectives on the important role that parents and teachers play in motivating youth to succeed. Finally, professionals who work with children and families share their observations on effective interventions and the roles of culture and spirituality in fostering positive outcomes. Excerpts from these interviews bring research to life and help call attention to processes that promote hope and resilience. This book will be invaluable for policymakers, educators, and community and advocacy groups, as well as scholars and students in family studies, human development, and social work.
In the thoroughly updated second edition of this unique book, Catherine McBride examines how the languages we know help structure the process of becoming literate. Taking an ecological and distinctively cross-cultural perspective, the book looks at reading and writing development and impairment across a range of languages, scripts, and contexts. The book covers issues including:
The importance of phonological sensitivity for learning to read and to write
The first units, or building blocks, of literacy learning in different scripts such as Chinese, English, Korean Hangul, Hebrew, Hindi and Arabic
The role of visual processing in reading and writing skills
How the latest research can inform the teaching of reading
An overview of our understanding of dyslexia, including recent neuroscientific research
The developmental challenges in becoming biliterate
What is special about writing for beginners and later for comprehensive writing
Basics of reading comprehension
Children's Literacy Development, Second Edition is a timely and important contribution to our understanding of literacy around the world. Written by an eminent scholar in the field, it is the only book available that provides an overview of how children learn to read and write in different languages, and will be essential reading for all students of Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Psycholinguistics and Speech Therapy.

Cognitive Development from a Strategy Perspective recognises the outstanding scientific legacy of Robert S. Siegler as a pioneer of modern research on cognitive development throughout the lifespan. This volume presents a collection of essays written by leading scholars in the field, using cutting-edge research to illustrate how Siegler's work and ideas lay the groundwork for much of the modern studies on cognitive development.
The collection includes chapters which examine strategic aspects of lifespan cognitive development, change mechanisms underlying cognitive development, and numeracy acquisition with emphasis given to the application of new strategies for education. It explores conceptual and methodological frameworks to best study and understand development during childhood and adulthood, and the role of foundational core knowledge on development and acquisition. These foundational issues are examined from various angles and finally integrated in a concluding panoramic chapter written by Siegler himself.
Cognitive Development from a Strategy Perspective offers valuable reading for graduates and researchers in cognitive development and mathematical cognition, as well as those at the interface of psychology and education.

An exploration of criminal trajectories, placing them in a developmental context Over the past several years, notions of developmental trajectories--particularly criminal trajectories--have taken hold as important areas of investigation for researchers interested in the longitudinal study of crime. This accessible volume presents the first full-length overview of criminal trajectories as a concept and methodology and makes the case for a developmental approach to the topic. The volume shows how a developmental perspective is important from a practical standpoint, helping to inform the design of prevention and early intervention programs to forestall the onset of antisocial and criminal activity, particularly when it begins in childhood. Crime in this view does not suit a one-size-fits-all model. There are different types of criminals who develop as the result of different types of developmental factors and experiences. By considering what risk factors may set the stage for later crimes in certain circumstances, the authors argue that we may be able to intervene at any point along the life course and, if addressed early enough, prevent criminal behavior from taking root. Criminal Trajectories offers a comprehensive synthesis of the findings from numerous criminal trajectory studies, presented through a multi-disciplinary lens. It addresses the policy and practice implications of these findings for the criminal justice system--including a critique of current sentencing and incarceration practices--and presents twelve recommendations informed by developmental frameworks for future work.
