Donald Trump's presidency has raised a question that many of us never thought we'd be asking: Is our democracy in danger? Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt have spent more than twenty years studying the breakdown of democracies in Europe and Latin America, and they believe the answer is yes. Democracy no longer ends with a bangin a revolution or military coupbut with a whimper: the slow, steady weakening of critical institutions, such as the judiciary and the press, and the gradual erosion of long-standing political norms. The good news is that there are several exit ramps on the road to authoritarianism.
The bad news is that, by electing Trump, we have already passed the first one.
Drawing on decades of research and a wide range of historical and global examples, from 1930s Europe to contemporary Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela, to the American South during Jim Crow, Levitsky and Ziblatt show how democracies dieand how ours can be saved.
Build stunning, maintainable, cross-platform mobile application user interfaces with the power of Xamarin
Key Features:
Create, configure, and customize stunning platform-specific features as well as cross-platform UIs with the power of Xamarin Forms.
Maximize the testability, flexibility, and overall quality of your Xamarin apps.
Get the most out of Xamarin.Forms and create your own reusable templates with C# scripting in Xamarin.
Book Description:
Xamarin is the most powerful cross-platform mobile development framework. If you are interested in creating stunning user interfaces for the iOS and Android mobile platforms using the power of Xamarin and Xamarin.Forms, then this is your ticket.
This book will provide you the practical skills required to develop real-world Xamarin applications. You will learn how to implement UI structures and layouts, create customized elements, and write C# scripts to customize layouts. You will create UI layouts from scratch so that you can tweak and customize a given UI layout to suit your needs by using Data Templates.
Moving on, you will use third-party libraries - such as the Razor template engine that allows you to create your own HTML5 templates within the Xamarin environment - to build a book library Hybrid solution that uses the SQLite.Net library to store, update, retrieve, and delete information within a SQLite local database. You'll also implement key data-binding techniques that will make your user interfaces dynamic, and create personalized animations and visual effects within your user interfaces using Custom Renderers and the PlatformEffects API to customize and change the appearance of control elements.
At the end of this book, you will test your application UI for robust and consistent behavior and then explore techniques to deploy to different platforms.
What You Will Learn:
Develop stunning native cross-platform apps using the Xamarin.Forms framework
Work with the different UI layouts to create customized layouts using the C# programming language and tweak it for a given platform
Customize the user interface using DataTemplates and CustomRenderers and the Platform Effects API to change the appearance of control elements
Build hybrid apps using the Razor Template Engine and create Razor Models that communicate with a SQLite database
Use location based features within your app to display the user's current location
Work with the Xamarin.Forms Map control to display Pin placeholders based on the stored latitude and longitude coordinates
Understand and use the MVVM pattern architecture to navigate between each of your ViewModels and implement Data Binding to display and update information
Work with the Microsoft Azure Platform to incorporate API Data Access using Microsoft Azure App Services and the RESTful API
Incorporate third-party features within your app using the Facebook SDK and the Open Graph API
Perform unit testing and profile your Xamarin.Forms applications
Deploy your apps to the Google Play Store and Apple App Store
Who this book is for:
If you are a mobile developer with basic knowledge of Xamarin and C# coding, then this book is for you.

Описание: Religion in Ephesos Reconsidered provides a detailed overview of the current state of research on the most important Ephesian projects offering evidence for religious activity during the Roman period. Ranging from huge temple complexes to hand-held figurines, this book surveys a broad scope of materials. Careful reading of texts and inscriptions is combined with cutting-edge archaeological and architectural analysis to illustrate how the ancient people of Ephesos worshipped both the traditional deities and the new gods that came into their purview. Overall, the volume questions traditional understandings of material culture in Ephesos, and demonstrates that the views of the city and its inhabitants on religion were more complex and diverse than has been previously assumed.

Описание: Summary of Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt's How Democracies Die
NOTE TO READERS This is a summary and analysis companion book based on Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt's How Democracies Die. It is meant to enhance your original reading experience, not supplement it. We strongly encourage you to purchase the original book as well: https: //tinyurl.com/y9tbd898
How Democracies Die explains the historical establishment of democracy in the United States and what the United States has done to preserve it. It also gives a study into the rise and fall of democracies in other countries. There is the layman description of the fall of democracy through warfare and the undermining of democracy by the rejection of established historical norms. How Democracies Die spells out a detailed first year of Donald Trump's administration and how he has undermined U.S. Democracy by swaying from American norms, guardrails, and ridding it of its gatekeepers.
The book describes authoritarianism and how other countries have fallen to it by default or through force. Now the United States is on the line. Warring political parties have allowed an authoritarian leader to slip into the presidential seat and manipulate administration. Media is under attack. Appointed officials are fired. Social unrest is exacerbated. The list goes on and on and this book spells out each focal point.
Although the United States has taken steps toward the demise of democracy, this book reveals the danger signs of a democratic decline and the steps toward recovering democracy.
Democracy in the United States needs to reform. The norms that were once respected need to be reinstated within the political system and integrated into society. This will allow diversity to exist in peace, increase economic stability, and secure an American democracy for many years to come.
NOTE TO READERS: Again, this is a summary and analysis companion book, not the original How Democracies Die. We strongly encourage you to purchase the original text as well.

Описание:
Each phase of Arab-Israeli peacemaking has been inordinately difficult in its own right, and every critical juncture and decision point in the long process has been shaped by U.S. politics and the U.S. leaders of the moment. The Peace Puzzle tracks the American determination to articulate policy, develop strategy and tactics, and see through negotiations to agreements on an issue that has been of singular importance to U.S. interests for more than forty years.
In 2006, the authors of The Peace Puzzle formed the Study Group on Arab-Israeli Peacemaking, a project supported by the United States Institute of Peace, to develop a set of "best practices" for American diplomacy. The Study Group conducted in-depth interviews with more than 120 policymakers, diplomats, academics, and civil society figures and developed performance assessments of the various U.S. administrations of the post–Cold War period. This book, an objective account of the role of the United States in attempting to achieve a lasting Arab–Israeli peace, is informed by the authors’ access to key individuals and official archives.

Tourism shapes popular fantasies of adventure, structures urban and natural space, creates knowledge around difference, and demands an array of occupations servicing the insatiable needs of those who travel for leisure. Even as migrants and refugees have become targets of ire from far-right parties, international tourism has grown worldwide. This issue posits a radical approach to the study of tourism, highlighting how tourism as a paradigmatic modern encounter bleeds into diplomacy, militarism, and empire building. Contributors investigate, among other topics, how the United States has used tourism in Latin America as a tool of interventionist foreign policy, how Bethlehem’s Manger Square has become a contested space between Palestinians and the Israeli state, how Spain's economy increasingly relies on northern European tourists, and how the US military's Cold War–era guidebooks attempted to convert soldiers stationed abroad into "ambassadors of goodwill."
